Hunting for a job is a painful experience, which nearly everyone must endure at least once in a lifetime. Books are published and magazine articles are written on the subject, all trying to tell job seekers what they should do or avoid doing in order to win the game. They can’t calm the nervous applicant but they do offer some advice.
To begin with, it is not a good idea to be late. Job interviewers don’t think very highly of the candidate (应聘者) who arrives twenty minutes after the appointed time. The wise job seeker explores the place the day before. Next day he arrives early for the appointment.
What makes a good impression Being on time does, then, appearance. It is essential for the candidate to be dressed properly and to look alive. It is also very important to look the interviewer in the eye because this “eye contact ” gives a strong impression of sincerity and openness.
Many candidates waste a good part of the interview explaining why they want the job; the man or woman on the other side of the desk is waiting to hear why the would – be employee would be good for the position and for the company.
It is very difficult task to display oneself to a possible employer: one must not be too humble since it is essential to show one’s good points and experiences. However, bragging (说大话) doesn’t make a very good impression. One thing is certain: interview time is a time for honesty. The interviewer is trying to discover not only the professional worth but also the character of the man or the woman he is meeting. Therefore, he must rely on his observation of the applicant, her manners, what she says and how she says it.
While this examination is going on the job seeker should remember that she too has a right to be curious. It is recommended that the applicant ask some serious questions about the job, the company, and its future. If the questions are intelligent, they will impress the interviewer favourably.
56.The writer’s purpose in writing the passage is to .
A.offer tips on job seeking. B.warn applicants not to be nervous.
C.analyze the thinking of interviewers D.stress the difficulty of job seeking
57.Which of the following shows whether an applicant could benefit the company
A.How early he / she is. B.What he / she is wearing.
C.His / Her explanation for the job. D.His / Her manners.
58.Which of the following statements would the writer agree with
A.Job seekers should be as early as possible.
B.Job seekers should be dressed as well as possible.
C.Interviewers pay a lot of attention to applicants’ behaviour.
D.Interviewers encourage applicants to ask questions.

Marriage Customs
Despite the recent growth in the number of divorces, we in the West still tend to regard courtship (求爱) and marriage as a romantic business. Boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy asks girl to marry him, girl accepts, wedding, flowers, big celebration.
But in other parts of the world things work differently. In India, for instance, arranged marriage is still very common. An intermediary (中间人), usually a married lady, learns that a young man wishes to get married and she begins to find him a suitable wife. The young couple meets for the first time on the day of the wedding.
In Japan, too, arranged marriages still take place. But things are organized in different way there. A girl wishes to find a husband, and the girl’s mother, or an aunt perhaps, approaches the mother of a suitable young man and the young couple are introduced. They get a chance to have a look at one another and if one of them says “Oh, no, I could never marry him or her”, they call the whole thing off. But if they like one another, then the wedding goes ahead.
In parts of Africa, a man is allowed to have several wives. Now that sounds fine from the man’s point of view, but in fact the man is taking on a great responsibility. When he takes a new wife and buys her a nice present, he has to buy all his other wives presents of equal value and, although we are obviously speaking of a male – dominated society, the wives often become very close and also, if there is disagreement in the family, the husband has three or four wives to argue with instead of just one.
It is true that American women brought up in the United States, who married Africans and went to live in Africa, have sometimes found it very difficult to take the role of the wife of an African living in African. Now most people, being used to the Western style of courtship and marriage, will think that this is the best system and the one with the greatest chance of producing a happy marriage. However, my observations have led me to believe that various forms of arranged marriages have just as much chance of bringing happiness to the husband and wife as our Western system of choosing marriage partners.
59.According to the passage, in the West, .
A.more and more people get divorced
B.fewer and fewer people get divorced
C.nobody gets divorced at all
D.50 percent of the married people get divorced

When you watch TV programmes about wild animals, it is amazing to see how an antelope can escape a lion’s attack. In the wilderness, everyone has a stunt (绝技). Even plants have their own ways of fighting off enemies.
Over millions of years of evolution, plants have developed a unique defence system. Chemicals are widely used for survival, By making their leaves, flowers, stems, roots and fruits distasteful or poisonous to predators (食肉动物), plants can fight back.
One such plant is the Gold Wattle tree. British botanist David Cameron has found that when an animal eats the tree’s leaves, the amount of poisonous tannin (丹宁酸) increases in the other leaves. “It’s like the damaged leaves telephoning the others telling them to fight together against the enemy,” he said.
The tree also sends defence messages to neighboring plants by giving out a special smell. Golden Wattle trees in the surrounding 45 meters will get the message and produce more tannin within 10 minutes. Now, if a predator eats too many of the trees’ leaves, it will die.
Every species of plant or tree specializes in the production of a particular set of chemicals. A herbivore (草食动物) that can safely eat the leaves of one tree may be poisoned by its neighbor.
In this way, plants have developed not only individual defence systems, but also shared it with others. This makes it impossible for a single predator to destroy even a small area of forest.
66.According to the passage, which of the following statements about the Golden Wattle tree is NOT correct

A.He means that leaves of Golden Wattle trees can speak to each other.
B.He intends to emphasize that the defence system of Golden Wattle is quick and effective.
C.He wants to indicate that the Golden Wattle leaves are very clever.
D.He is explaining how the Golden Wattle trees warn each other when they are attacked.

As we all know, wood has many uses. It is a kind of very important building material. Wood can be made into desks, chairs, beds and many other things. Fine paper is made of wood, too. Only trees can provide us with enough wood. Trees can also provide us with oxygen and make the air around us fresh. In hot summer trees give us shade and make our surroundings more beautiful. What’s more, trees can stop soil from being washed away by heavy rains.
Since trees are so important to us, we should plant more trees. At the same time, measures should be taken to protect forests and prevent trees from being cut down.

M : Of course.
W : Do you always lock the front door when you go out
M : Yes, and I am sure I locked it yesterday.
W : OK. What about the windows
M : Well, the downstairs ones are always locked. We even have a lock on the little one in the hall.
W : And upstairs
M : Well, I think most of the windows were probably locked. They were all locked on Friday.
W : And you didn’t open any of them on Friday night
M : No.
W : Well, I can’t understand it. Let’s go and look round. Perhaps I’ll notice something you missed.
