A
After the earthquake and tsunamis hit southern Asia on Dec. 26, web sites and cell phones have become important tools for people to seek their family and friends missing in the disaster.
Seeking people on web sites
Soon after the earthquake and tsunami waves struck southern Asia on Dec. 26, people from all over the world began to post notes on various web sites to seek news about family or friends caught in the disaster.
On those web sites, the messages are brief but poignant (痛苦的): “Missing: Christina Blomee in Khao Lak” or “Where are you ” Some are nothing more than names, ages, nationalities. Others list details of where loved ones were last seen. Some have pictures of the missing.
The following are some of the messages posted by those desperate people seeking their loved ones on the web sites.
“Does anyone have news of my colleague Chuck Kearcik and his wife Melinda and children Candice and Charlie (US citizens working in Kuwait, vacationing in the Maldives) ”
“He is an American citizen and is retired living on South Pattaya Beach (in Thailand). Please contact me with any information as I have no way to find or communicate with him right now! Please help me find my Dad!”
“I am desperately trying to contact my four-year old son Aidan Ashburn-Higgs and his father Jeffrey Ashburn who both flew into Thailand on Sunday. I have not heard from them since they left the airport in San Francisco. If you see this, please let me know you are safe.”
Cell phones help a lot
Besides websites, cell phones have also played an important role in the disaster. With cell phones, thousands of people in the disaster zone were able to send text messages to newspapers and television stations getting word back home.
In Sweden and Denmark, mobile phone operators stopped charging for mobile calls to and from Southeast Asia for 48 hours to make it easier for survivors to get in touch with their families.
“We thought it would be a nice move from cell phone companies,” said an official of a Swedish company.
The Swedish companies also sent text messages to all Swedish-registered phones in Thailand asking subscribers (用户) to call their families or the Swedish Embassy (瑞典大使馆).
Besides, cell phones were also used to track people’s whereabouts. In Denmark, telecom companies provided information about all cell phone communications between Denmark and Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka between DeC.23 and Jan. 3. “This will allow us to identify people and find out when and what calls they make to map their whereabouts,” said a Danish official.

As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to performance and ill health.
The amount of stress a person can stand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first sings of unusual difficulties. When faced with stress, in whatever form we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between “flight or fight” and in more early days the choices made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart diseases have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives it would be unwise to do so even if we could, we need to find ways to deal with it.

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You have got to want to write, ” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20 year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由撰稿人), I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a real writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering, what if I would keep putting my dream to the test---- even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadow land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.
64.The passage is meant to ________ .
A.warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience

C.the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reached
D.a world that exists only in one’s imagination
D
In many businesses, computers have largely replaced paperwork, because they are fast, easy, and do not make mistakes. As one banker said, “unlike humans, computers never have a bad day.” And they are honest. Many banks advertise that their transactions(交易) are “untouched by human hands” and therefore safe from human strong desire. Obviously, computers have no reason to steal money. But they also have no conscience(道德意识), and the growing number of computer crimes shows they can be used to steal.
Computer criminals don’t use guns. And even if they are caught, it is hard to punish them because there are no witness and often no evidence. A computer can not remember who use it; it simply does what it is told. The head teller at a New York City bank used a computer to steal more than one and a half billion dollars in just four years. No one noticed this theft because he moved the money from one account to another. Each time a customer he had robbed questioned the balance in his account, the teller claimed a computer error, then replaced the missing money from someone else’s account. This man was caught only because he was a gambler. When the police broke up an illegal gambling operation, his name was in the records.
Some employees used the computer’s power to get revenge on employers they computerized records. Most computer criminals have been minor employees. Now police wonder if this is “the tip of the iceberg.” As one official says, “I have a feeling that there is more crime out there than we are catching. What we are seeing now is all so poorly done. I wonder what the real experts are doing—the one who really knows how a computer works.”
68.Which feature of computers makes computer theft possible

C.They have no conscience. D.They are honest.
69.It is hard to catch computer criminals because________ .
A.computers forget who used them

All research on body image shows that women are much more critical of their appearance than men much less likely to admire what they see in the mirror. Up to 8 out of 10 women are dissatisfied with their reflection, and more than half may see a distorted image.
Men looking in the mirror are more likely to be either pleased with what they see or indifferent. Research shows that men generally have a much more positive body image than women---if anything, they may tend to over-value their attractiveness. Some men looking in the mirror may literally not see the shortcomings in their appearance.
Why are women so much more self-critical than men Because women are judged on their appearance more than men, and standards of female beauty are considerably higher and more inflexible. Women are continually bombarded with image of the “ideal” face. And constant exposure to idealized images of female beauty on TV, magazines and billboards makes exceptional good looks seem normal and anything short of perfection seem abnormal and ugly. It has been estimated that young women now see more images of outstandingly beautiful women in one day than our mothers saw throughout their entire teenage life.
Also, most women are trying to achieve the impossible: standards of female beauty have in fact become progressively more unrealistic during the last century. In 1917, the physically perfect woman was about 5ft 4in tall and weighed nearly 140 pounds. Even 25 years ago, top models and beauty queens weighed only 8% less than the average woman, now they weigh 23% less. The current media ideal for women is achievable by less than 5% of the female population--- and that’s just in terms of weight and size. If you want the ideal shape, face etc., it’s probably more like 1%.
72.The author writes this passage is to ______.
A.explain a phenomenon B.compare two facts
C.make a suggestion D.strengthen a current theory
73.The difference between men and women when they look into the mirror is that_________
A.women stay longer before the mirror than men

C.women, more than men, come away from the mirror feeling unsatisfied
D.women’s looks before the mirror appear more distorted than men’s

A.denied B.doubtful C.very proud of D.influenced by
