Anna Whitney, a sophomore at Colorado State University, first had a problem taking tests when she began college. "I was always 1 prepared for my tests. Sometimes I studied for weeks before test. Yet I would go in to take the test, only to find I would not answer the questions 2 . I would blank out because of nervousness and fear. I couldn't think of the answers. My 3 grades on the tests did not show what I knew to the teacher." Another student in microbiology had 4 experiences. He said, "My first chemistry test was very difficult. Then, on the second test, I sat down to take it, and I was so nervous that I was 5 . My hands were moving up and down so 6 that it was hard to hold my pencil. I knew the material and I knew the answers. Yet I couldn't 7 write them down!"
These two young students were 8 something called test anxiety. Because a student worries and is anxious about a test, his or her 9 does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think 10 because of the extreme tension and nervousness. Although poor grades are often a(n) 11 of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. This hotel in the trees is famous in the world. People who know very little about Kenya, know of Treetops. When King George VI died, Princess Elizabeth was staying on the Treetops, and when she came down from there, she succeeded to become the queen of the country. This hotel, in the middle of the forest, shows the pleasure of Africa. When you visit it, you will be sent into the heart of the forest by hotel buses, and then a guide, with a gun to protect you against big game, will go with you to the Treetops. Before and after dinner, for the whole night if you wish, you can sit on the corridor(走廊), watching animals come to the water pool. The earliest hotel Treetops was built round a large tree on the opposite side of the water, but that was destroyed by fire and the new hotel Treetops, which is built round several trees, is much bigger.
The dining room at Treetops is small, and as the waiters cannot walk round to serve guests, a clever "railway service" has been invented. Guests take their food as it passes slowly in front of them, along a line in the center of the table.
There are many animals around the Treetops. When you visit them, you can see:
-Animals and their babies are waiting to greet the guests.
-Animals are enjoying the Treetops pool in the daylight.
-A long bodied, long ring tailed, very active cat-like animal is a special one coming out at night. He hunts and eats anything he can overpower and is very destructive. He lives in the trees at Treetops. He comes for his food every evening. Do not get too near to him, as his teeth and claws(爪)can do you harm. These animals can be trained and become lovely pets.
-Some other animals have a thick coating on fur to keep them warm in the cold forest nights.
-Many buffaloes (水牛) come to the Treetops for water and salt during the day or night.

As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment and self-improvement.
Ask a bachelor(单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night's sleep or a three-day vacation. I don't know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
6. According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because _______ .
A. he is unwilling to take family responsibilities
B. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single
C. he finds more fun in dating than in marriage
D. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement
7. Raising children, in the author's opinion, is _______ .
A. a moral duty
B. a thankless job
C. a rewarding task
D. a source of inevitable pain
8. From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems from _______ .
A. hatred B. misunderstanding C. prejudice D. ignorance
9. To understand what true happiness is one must _______ .
A. have as much fun as possible during one's lifetime
B. make every effort to liberate oneself from pain
C. put up with pain under all circumstances
D. be able to distinguish happiness from fun
10. What is the author trying to tell us
A. Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.
B. One must know how to make money.
C. It is not important to make commitments.
D. It is pain that leads to happiness.

If there is any single factor(因素) that makes for success in living, it is the ability to be benefited by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to analyze(分析) defeat and actually learn something from it in this next undertaking(从事的工作). Wrongly take defeat for failure and you are sure indeed to fail. For it isn’t defeat that makes you fail; it is your own refusal to see in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.
Defeats are nothing to be afraid of. They are common incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it, analyze it and learn why you failed. Defeat, in other words, can help to get rid of its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing can cause within us such a strong wish to succeed. If you let a baby grasp a stick and try to pull it away, he will hold it more and more tightly until his whole weight is hung up. It is this same reaction(反应) that should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you make full use of the power which defeat gives, you can complete with it far more than you are able to.
44.What does the author know
A.He knows at least several examples of success.
B.He knows every success in life.
C.He knows every success that has been achieved by man.
D.It’s not referred to in the passage.
45.The person who was able to analyze defeat is likely .
A.to achieve success B.to be afraid of his defeat
C.to let a baby grasp a stick D.to make a living
46.The author .
A.advises you to mix defeat with failure
B.orders you to mix defeat with failure
C.wants you to wrongly take defeat for failure
D.warns you not to wrongly take defeat with failure
47.What does the author advise one to do with the power which defeat gives
A.One should explain it. B.One should examine it.
C.One should use it to win success. D.One should know its usefulness.

“Depend on yourself” is what nature says to every man. Parents can help you. Teachers can help you. But all these only help you to help yourself.
There have been many men in history. But many of them were very poor in childhood, and no uncles, aunts or friend to help them. Schools were few. They could not depend upon them for an education. They saw how it was and set to work with all their strength to know something. They worked their own way till they become well-known.
One of the most famous teachers in England used to tell his pupils, “I cannot make worthy men of you, but I can help make men of yourself.”
Some young men don’t try their best to make themselves valuable to the human beings. They can never gain achievements unless they see their weak points and change their coarse. They are nothing now, and will be nothing as long as they live, unless they accept the advice of their parents and teachers, and depend on their own efforts.

Dear Neo,
This emblem is named "Dancing Beijing", which perfectly summarizes the meanings implied in the image. It combines traditional Chinese calligraphy, arts of dance and painting as well as modern westernized concept.
Now, look at the picture again. You can touch the Olympic spirit when the athlete image appears in your mind. You can comprehend not only the age-old city's history but also its creativity from the picture-like Chinese character "Jing". You can feel an outburst of enthusiasm in Chinese culture through the scarlet color. And, you can hear the solemn promise of holding a most excellent Olympics, that a great nation, which possesses five thousand years' history of civilization, gives the world.
Yours,
Li Hua
