A few years ago I was shopping with a friend and his 12-year-old daughter in downtown San Francisco. A street musician, whom my friend happened to know from his own musician day, was playing the saxophone on a street corner. His name was Clifford, and he had attracted a large crowd with his performance. After he finished, my friend introduced him to me and his daughter. Clifford asked her if she played any instrument. When she replied that she was taking trumpet(小号) lessons and played in her junior high school band(乐队), he said, “That’s fine, little lady. Learn your instrument well and you can play anything.”
Somehow these simple yet wise words struck me as proper not only for a trumpet player but also for a reader. If you learn to read well, you can read anything you want—not just newspapers and magazines, but more difficult materials like philosophy, film criticism, military history—whatever interests you as your confidence grows. You would not be limited(限制) in any way. If you have the vocabulary—or at least a good dictionary near at hand—you can pick up a book, concentrate on it, and made sense of the author’s words.
In the United States, reading instruction often ends at elementary school, so students sometimes have difficulty as they progress through school. They must take their assignments, armed only with their elementary school reading skills. The result, too often, is frustration and loss of confidence. And the assigned reading in your college courses will be even greater than they were in high school. Developing Reading Skills is designed to accomplish(完成) several tasks: to show you the skills that will enable you to read with greater comprehension, to help you cope with reading assignment with confidence, and to teach you to become an active reader.
60. The talk between the girl and Clifford serves as an introduction to ________.
A. the importance of reading
B. the connection(关联) between playing instruments and reading
C. the necessity of learning to play an instrument
D. the variety of reading materials
61. It can be inferred (推断)from the story that ________.
A. Clifford was good at playing the saxophone
B. the author’s friend was once a street musician
C. the 12-year-old girl played the trumpet very poorly
D. Clifford was a good music teacher
62. We can infer from the last paragraph that Developing Reading Skills ______.
A. is directed to elementary school students
B. centers around vocabulary building skills
C. aims(目的) at helping students read better
D. offers elementary reading skills
63. The underlined word “struck” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _______.
A. impressed(留下印象) B. influenced C. proved D. awakened(觉醒)

No one knows yet the accurate number of lives, which have been lost in this terrible fire. But reports suggest that it is more than one hundred.
A wall of flames fifty feet high and at least one hundred and fifty miles wide is now racing towards the forests and rich farmlands of southern Victoria. Towns less than one hundred miles from Melbourne will be in danger unless the wind changes. People are rushing excitedly into the streets. The police have warned them not to see the fire but many people are doing so.
The cause of the fire is unknown. No rain has fallen in this part of Australia for three months, and the hot, north-west wind from the great central desert is blowing at more than thirty miles an hour.
The firefighters are traveling to the fire by road, rail and air. But it is not easy to get there. Flames and fallen trees have cut off or blocked roads and railway lines. The thick smoke often prevents them from finding the air strips (飞机跑道).
It is said that the fire has brought the greater danger to the country since the Second World War.
64.By the time the article was written, the fire .
A.had just broken out B.had been put out
C.was spreading violently (猛烈地) D.was coming to an end
65.The writer wrote this article mainly to tell people .
A.the fire was terrible and dangerous
B.it was impossible to put out the fire
C.more than one hundred people died of the fire
D.to join in the fight against the fire
66.In the 4th paragraph, the writer suggested that .
A.the fire would soon be controlled by the firefighters
B.it would be very difficult to put out the fire
C.the government was paying great attention to the fire
D.the fire had caused great losses and the airport was in ganger
67.The underlined word “ accurate” in the first sentence has the same meaning as .
A.recent B.whole C.rough (大体的) D.exact

A Letter to Editor of TV Weekly
Dear Sir/Madam,
I read Alison Burnham’s review of When we were 12, and I do not agree with her. I thought the programme was wonderful . I found the old news pictures really interesting . They helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling.
The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money in it — one big coin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, I couldn’t catch the bus home — I had to walk. As a grown-up, whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I’m able to take control of the situation.
I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so called “reality programmes”. I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Daniels
68. What is Chris Daniels’ purpose of writing this letter
A. To persuade Bret Chrysler to turn away from quiz shows.
B. To entertain other readers with old news pictures.
C. To express his appreciation of the programme.
D. To have his story told on the programme.
69. According to the passage, Chris Daniels had to walk home because .
A. he hadn’t got a return ticket
B. he had lost his bus ticket
C. he didn’t like big crowds
D. he missed the bus home
70. What does Chris Daniels now think about his experience on the bus
A. He should have told the conductor then.
B. He should have been well treated.
C. He regrets going to school alone.
D. He wishes it hadn’t happened.

Recently we have had a heated discussion on whether people should keep pets at home in cities.
Some students think it’s a good idea to keep pets because many old people who live alone at home can get some comfort from pets. Besides, getting along well with animals will make our life interesting. On the contrary, the other students are against the idea. In their opinions, if too many people keep pets at home, it is bad for the environment. What is worse, pets may make too much noise and even attack people.
I like animals, so I don’t think it’s bad to keep pets at home. But we must take some measures to prevent them from polluting our environment.
