Five mornings a week, Monday through Friday, the alarm clock on Lora McCarty’s nightstand(床头柜)rings at 6 am.
“Sometimes, I hit the alarm clock,” said McCarty, a single mother of three young children. “When I’m tired, I hit the alarm clock two or three times.” But she always gets up.
McCarty, 29, gets herself and the kids ─ Jessica, 4, Earl, 3, and Jack, 2 ─ ready for the day. Then, they all leave the house for a nearby bus stop and the quick ride to Community Child Care Services, which is where McCarty works and her children stay until 5 pm, when it’s time to go home.
The bus is quick. McCarty has a job helping to care for babies at the center and her own children are nearby in the same building. But McCarty wants to study at college next fall, with the idea of becoming a teacher. McCarty expects to take some classes at night. She’ll need care for her children.
Last year was difficult for McCarty. Her mother, Elaine Vassallo, died of heart disease in June 2005. Her marriage ended a few months later. She and the children’s father have had problems throughout the years. They tried to get back together. It just didn’t work. Earlier this year, a child care center where McCarty was working closed.
For McCarty, the new center meets an important need. McCarty has to work. She also has to care for three children. Next year, if it all works out, she’ll also be a student.
45. McCarty often goes to work with her children ____________.
A. by train B. by bus C. on foot D. by taxi
46. When McCarty goes to classes, what worries her most may be that _____________.
A. she will be short of money B. she will lose her job
C. no one will look after her children D. her children will be injured in school

A. she and her husband got separated
B. she began to take some classes at night
C. her mother died
D. she lost her job in a child care center

Flu is easy to underestimate. The virus spreads so easily via (by means of) tiny droplets that 30 million to 60 million Americans catch it each year. Some 36,000 die, mostly the elderly. It mutates(变异)so fast that no one ever becomes fully immune, and a new vaccine(疫苗)has to be made each year.
Avian-flu(禽流感)is a kind of flu. But the disease that is taking lives in Southeast Asia is no ordinary flu. Its primary victims have been chickens, more than a hundred million of them, killed by the virus. It’s not unusual for chickens to get flu; in fact, avian-flu viruses far outnumber human ones. But Robert Webster of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis has studied flu viruses for 40 years and has never seen the likes of this one.
“This virus is probably the worst influenza virus that I’ve ever seen or worked with,” Webster says. Not only is it frighteningly deadly to chickens, which can die within hours of exposure, swollen and hemorrhaging(伴有肿痛和出血),but it kills mammals(哺乳动物) from lab mice to tigers with similar efficiency. Here and there people have come down with it too, catching it from infected poultry(家禽). Half the known cases have died.
In those deaths many public health experts hear the distant sound of a catastrophe(大灾难).So far this virus isn’t good at passing from birds to people, let alone from one person to the next. “It can make that first step across, but then it doesn’t spread easily from human to human,” says Webster. “Thank God. Or else we’d be in big trouble.”
Maybe this virus will never learn the trick of racing from person to person like the milder flus that empty offices and classrooms each year. Maybe it simply can’t. Or maybe efforts to wipe out the virus will succeed. But experts are urging the world to prepare for the worst.
We know from the text that _______________.
people catch ordinary flu easily
people catch avian-flu easily
mammals catch ordinary flu easily
one person catches avian-flu from another person easily
This text is written to _________________.
inform people of knowledge of flu
tell people that avian-flu can be defeated
warn people of danger of avian-flu
show people how to prevent avian-flu from breaking out

Possible version for writing:
Dear friends,
I believe almost all the parents allow their children some pocket money. Have you ever planned how to spend it In my opinion, there are many worthwhile ways to spend the money. For example, we can keep the money in the bank, which will help us to form the good habit of saving. We also can use them to buy some good books to enrich our knowledge. Personally, I like to collect stamps with my pocket money and they will bring pleasure to me. Anyway, I think we should use our pocket money wisely. That’s all, thank you.
