Some English words are made up of the same part and have different beginnings and different endings, such as import, export, report and transport. All these words, you can see, have the same root “port”, which comes from the Latin(拉丁文) word, meaning “to carry” or “to move” from one place to another. And according to the bit at the beginning——which we call the prefix(前缀),the meaning changes: “import” means “to carry in”, or “to bring into a country”, “export”, “ex” means “out of”, so this word means “to carry out of a country”, “re” means “back”, so the word “report” means “to tell somebody, to bring back information to somebody”, “transport”, “trans” means “across” and it means “to carry across one place to another.”
Let’s look at the following words: supporter, reporter importer and exporter. You can see that in this casethese words are nouns which are made up of the verbs. Adding a suffix “er” to a verb means a person who does this thing. So supporter means somebody who supports. Importer is somebody who imports and exporter is somebody who exports, and so on.

Everybody may have seen the film “Death on the Nile”, but nobody can imagine that the writer of the story, Agatha Christie, saved a baby in a most unusual way.
In June 1977, a baby girl became seriously ill in Deleville. Doctors there were unable to find out the causec of her illness, so she was sent to a famous hospital in London, where there were many excellent doctors. The baby was so seriously ill that a team of doctors hurried to examine her without any delay. The doctors, too, were puzzled by the baby’s illness, and they also became discouraged. Just then a nurse asked to speak to them.
“I think the baby is suffering from thallium poisoning(蛇中毒),” said the nures, “A few days ago, I read a story ‘A Pale Horse’ written by Agatha Christie. Someone uses thallium poison, and all the symptoms(症状) are written in the book. They are exactly the same as the baby’s.”
“You’re very good at observing(观察) things, ” said a doctor, “and you may be right. We’ll carry out some tests and find out whether the cause is thallium poisoning or not. ”

Cao Ye, a married worker aged 38, may soon be able to fulfill(实现) a dream of going to college thanks to new recruitment(录取) reforms for higher education.
The change puts an end to China’s 20-year-old restrictions (约束) on the age and marital status (婚姻状况) of people able to take college entrance examination. From 2001——this year’s national enexamination, the rule that hopefuls should be “single and generally under 25 years old” will no longer be in use.
“Since I failed the entrance examination 13 years ago, I have been in deep despair because I thought I would never have a chance to attend college, ” said Cao Ye, who is working at a glass factory. Fortunately, the new rule gives him a second chance.
In the late 1970s, China removed age and marital status restrictions because many people had missed out on education during the “Cultural (文化) Revolution” (1966~1976). But since 1979,because of a shortage of educational resources, the right has been given only to youngsters, most of whom have been high-school graduates.
Many people, like Cao, who failed the entrance examinations before, had to give up the chance to go to college. These people had no choice but to teach themselves or join correspondence courses (函授) when they wanted a higher education. Now people, regardless of their age, can take national entrance examinations along with high school graduates.
In another change, graduates from secondary vocational(职业) schools can also apply for higher educational colleges instead of only being able to apply for higher vocational schools.
These reforms are important for China to improve all-round development and set up lifelong learning.

Where did you see a polar bear (北极熊) ?At a zoo, perhaps If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These “Polar Bears” are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group; this is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body’s temperature drops so low that finally the heart beat stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming. They say that their favourite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system (循环系统) because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.
The main benefits (益处) of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim all the year round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says, “When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.”
