In our great nature there are thousands of kinds of birds. Most of them live on crops or worms, however a few kinds of them live on meat of small animals or other birds. Such birds as hawks are usually considered to be cruel and harmful to people , yet only a few scientists hold the belief that birds which eat meat do a lot of good to human beings because they mainly feel upon rats, mice and other pests. Probably many people will disagree to this idea, saying, “Hawks often kill our tame animals , such as chickens, rabbits and some other games.” Yes, they really do such things very often, but in the meantime they may perform another service by wiping out tame animals or birds that are weak or sick. In a recent experiment including many flights by homing pigeons, the pigeons were often attacked by hawks, but only such – the weakest pigeons flying in the experiment, which helps to prove that hawks help us to keep the strong and healthy tame animals and birds.

Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, especially their parents, don’t know them as well as their friends do . In large families, it is often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice.
It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or many friends.Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication is very important in children’s growing up , because friends can discuss something difficult to say to their family members.
However, parents often try to choose their children’s friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of “choice” is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions?

Have you ever thought of what the polluted air might be doing to your health? An oxygen bar in New York is giving its customers a clean choice——20 minutes of 99 percent pure oxygen for $ 16. This oxgygen treatment, the owner of the bar says, will purify your body, and make you healthier and happier.
Doctors, however, do not agree to this treatment, and they call it a shame. Pure oxgygen, they say, does nothing to purify your body.On the contrary, it can be harmful——particularly for people with serious lung disease.
Why do we breathe ? We breathe for two reasons. First, our bodies “tell” us to take in oxygen. Second, we need to breathe out carbon dioxide.
But people with serious lung disease often lose the ability to respond to the carbon dioxide “signal”. Their bodies only tell them to breathe when they need oxygen.Give them pure oxygen and their bodies think they don’t need to breathe. So they don’t.Their cells fill up with carbon dioxide, which won’t cause any harm.
Even if you don’t have a serious lung problems, breathing pure oxygen for a long period of time can be dangerous. After 24 hours, it can cause fluid to build up in your lungs, leading to lung collapse. But to breathe pure oxygen for a short period of time, say 20 minutes at an oxygen bar, perhaps won’t cause any harm.
And the trend is on, with oxygen bars opening one after another in New York and other big cities in the world. Many people, especially young people, go there to purify their bodies. You must be at least 16 to get in. After knowing what some doctors say about oxygen bars, would you still want to go there to have such a dangerous treatment?
63.Which of the following statements about oxygen bars is TRUE according to the passage? ( )

C.Oxygen bar owners say that oxygen treatment is good to your health
D.Customers say that the price for the oxygen treatment is too high
64.Why will people with serious lung illness die if breathing pure oxygen? ( )
A.Because the air they breathe is polluted.
B.Because pure oxygen burns their lungs.
C.Because their hearts will collapse
D.Because they no longer breathe out carbon dioxide.
65.What makes oxygen bars popular in big cities according to the passage? ( )
A.People like to follow a new trend.
B.Everything popular in New York is followed by other cities.
C.Air in big cities is polluted.
D.Carbon dioxide is damaging our health.
66.What does the writer think about oxygen bars? ( )
A.They are harmful B.They are useful
C.They have the right to exist D.They are good to patients

On Nov. 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City.
If you have ever been to a Perlman, concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio(小儿麻痹症) as a child, and so he has braces(支架) on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches (双拐) .
He walks painfully, yet majestically, until he reaches his chair. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play.
But this time, something went wrong. Just as he finished the first few bars (小节),one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear it snap (嘣断)——it went off like gunfire across the room. There was no mistaking what that meant. There was no mistaking what he had to do.
We figured that he would have to get up, put on the clasps again, pick up the crutches and limp his way off stage——to either find another violin or else find another string for this one. But he didn’t. Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin a again.
The orchestra began, and he played from where he had left off . And he played with such passion and such power and such purity as they had never heard before.
When he finished, there was an awesome silence in the room. And then people rose and cheered. He smiled, wiped the sweat from this brow, raised his bow to quiet us , and then he said in a quiet tone, “You know, sometimes it is the artist’s task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have left.”

23.选A。
24.选A。 This is a worthwhile experiment.

28.选C。by far修饰比较级时,需要在比较级前加the;第二个空构成the more…the more结构,表示“越……越……”。
29.选A。

39.D。与southern相对。
42.D。
43.B。

51.A。下句有the training。

76.in→on 77.去掉the 78.fall→fell 79.去掉up 80.late→later 81.off 前加 was

In Lasa it snows; so does it in Urumuqi and the average temperature of the year is usually at about zero to 10 degrees centigrade. Wind is blowing through South China Sea, East China Sea and Yellow Sea.
Considering different areas with different weathers, it’s better for you to make such proper preparations for the travel as winter suits, sweaters and umbrellas as well. I wish you both a good and happy journey.

Our 16 – year – old daughter started to smoke last Christmas. It killed me to see that lovely girl with a cigarette in her mouth. I told her how I felt. Martha continued to smoke, saying “It’s my life,” and so on. I told her if she didn’t stop smoking, I wouldn’t send her to college. She agreed to give it up.
Last night there was a cigarette smell on Martha’s breath. She had to say she had broken her word. Now I must do what I’ve said to punish her.
Martha is unusually bright and wants to teach children. I’m working full time to put her elder sister through school and would do the same for Martha. My husband’s pay is good. But with prices going up all the time we could never educate the girls unless I kept on working.
My opinion is that if smoking is more important to Martha than college, I’m a fool to work to put her through college.
