At one time no one could travel on an English road faster than four miles an hour. That was the law until 1896. A man had to walk in front of a car which could not go faster than the man. At night the man had to carry a red lamp.
Once Charles Rolls brought a car from France to England, but he wanted to drive faster than four miles an hour. In order to have no trouble with the police, he had a talk with some of the police officers, who ordered their policemen to look the other way when the car came along the road. This was a good plan in the country, but not so easy to follow in the busy streets of London.
One night Rolls and some friends started from London on their journey to Cambridge. One of the men walked in front with the red lamp, but he walked as fast as he could. The police became interested in walls and shop-fronts when they heard the car, and no one of them saw it.
They reached a hill; but what a waste of time it was to drive down the hill at four miles an hour! Rolls was getting ready to speed up: but then he noticed a policeman who was not looking the other way. The slow car reached him.
"Good evening," said the policeman, looking at the car.
"Good evening," said Rolls. , "One of these horseless things." said the policeman, looking at it with interest.
"Yes," said Rolls, and waited.
"I've often wanted a ride in one; but of course policemen can't buy things like that." He turned and looked hopefully in Roll's face.
"Jump in," said Rolls.
"Thanks," said the policeman, and did so. "Now.” he said, sitting down, "you can let it go just as you like down the hill. There isn't another policeman on this road for a mile and a half."

Jet lag( 飞行时差反应). caused by traveling between time zones, is becoming a common problem for frequent (经常的) travelers:for 49 percent it is only a slight problem but for 45 it is a real one. It is caused by disruption(打乱) to the internal biological clock, and may lead to digestive(消化) problems, tiredness and sleeping problems.
Generally speaking, our biological clock is a little bit disturbed if we just move into the next time zone; but jet lag becomes a problem once we have passed through three or four time zones." The body takes about one day to get over each hour of time difference. But the seriousness of jet lag also depends on our direction of travel. If we go north or south, we won't notice any difference, because there is usually no time zone change. However, if we travel west we will be in advance of ourselves as for our internal clock^ and problems may come into being. A west-to-east journey, on the other hand, makes us late compared to the local time. It often calls for even greater effort in adjustment(调节) since we are not quick enough to catch up with the new time schedule. Therefore, a trip from Washington D.C. to San Francisco often causes fewer problems than a San Francisco to D.C. trip.
67. A traveler who suffers from jet lag has problems in ___.
A. knowing the direction of a plane
B. knowing the distance of his flight
C. getting used to the weather of a new place
D. adapting his biological clock to a new place

70. The main purpose of the passage is to ___.
A.explain the cause of jet lag problems B. teach us how to avoid jet lag problems
C.explain the differences between time zones D. show the way to reduce the degree of jet lag problems

On December 26, 2003, the worst earthquake in more than a decade hit Bam, a historical city in Iran. At least 25,000 people died in the quake——nearly a third of the city's population. And thousands more were left homeless, hungry and sad.

Dear editor,
I am Li Hua, a high school student. I am writing to state my opinion concerning the comparison of telecommunications past and present.
In days gone by, people could not afford computers or mobile telephones. Instead, they had to contact each other mainly by writing letters, sending telegraphs and making landline calls which were either inconvenient or expensive.
By contrast, people today have much wider access to efficient means of communication like the e-mail, fax and mobile telephone, which are faster and simpler for professional and personal use. With the development of technologies, prices for making calls and accessing the internet have been falling progressively. In turn. these developments have resulted in such products becoming more affordable and necessary for ordinary people in modem society.
It is positive to see improvements in telecommunications, as they will help to improve the Quality of life. 1 feel very appreciative to these changes. All the best!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
