第二部分 阅读理解
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项
A(CDB)
“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the United States greet each other. But “ How are you?” is also an unusual question. It’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks “ How are you?” expects to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you? ” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are common ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people also don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person may be thinking, “No, I don’t. I think you are wrong.” But it isn’t polite to disagree so strongly, so he might say, “I am not so sure.” It is a nicer way to say that you don’t agree someone.
People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says” I’ve got to go now.” or the person who wants to hang up will give an excuse “Someone is at the door” or “ Something is burning on the stove (火炉)”. The excuse may be real, or they may be not. The person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person’s feelings.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an opinion, or ending a conversation, people often don’t say exactly what they are thinking. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it’s a part of the game of language.
1. The passage is mainly about_______.
A. how to make friends with others
B. some nice questions when greeting each other
C. an important way to be polite to each other
D. how to end a conversation
2. One of the rules of the game of language is probably________.
A. to be polite
B. not to disagree with others
C. to say what you mean
D. not to always say exactly what you are thinking.
3. According to the passage which of the following is TRUE?
A. “ I have another phone call now” is a good excuse to end a conversation.
B. The best answer to the question “How are you ?” is “Fine”.
C. If you disagree with others, you’d better not to say so. Instead, you should say you agree with them.
D. Never say exactly what you meant at any time.
B(BCA)
Like humans, animals communicate with each other. They do this in many different ways and for different reasons. Of course, they don’t speak a special language in the way humans do. They have their own special ways and reasons for communicating.
One reason that animals communicate is to find a mate. Male and female animals have to meet a number of the opposite sex if they are to reproduce. Often the male is more colorful than the female. His bright colors are designed to attract the females.
Some animals, such as bees, communicate with each other when they are searching for food. When a worker bee finds food, it returns to the hive (蜂群)and dances. The dance tells the other bees where the food is.
Many animals make special calls to other animals to warn them of danger. Whales and dolphins send sounds to each other across huge distance of the ocean. Some of these sounds are believed to be either making calls or danger warnings. Some scientists, however, think that some of these sounds are the animals’ communicating their feelings with each other.
Apes(类人猿) are the nearest animal relatives to human beings. Chimpanzees(黑猩猩) can be trained to recognize a large number of different sounds. They are also able to imitate them and obey the order. Some people think apes understand our language. Some people say apes learn our language. Other people say that apes learn how to use “words” in the same way they learn to use sticks as tools: they try something a number of times until they finally get it right, and once they have learned it they can remember it. These people say animals are unable to create a new language and cannot speak about things that are not actually there. They believe that it is only humans that have the language ability.
4. The passage is mainly about that _______.
A. Animals don’t have the language ability
B. Animals communicate in special ways and for many reasons
C. Though they don’t speak a language, animals also have their own language
D. People have different opinions about whether animals have the language ability
5. From the passage we can infer that______.
A. Animals communicate to find a mate
B. Apes have the language ability
C. Dolphins may be able to change feelings
D. Animals’ languages are also as complicated as that of human beings
6. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Some people think that apes learn to use something as tools by trying many times.
B. Chimpanzees can recognize a number of different sounds by themselves.
C. The female animals’ color are usually more beautiful to attract the male animals.
D. Nearly all the people believe apes can understand our language.
C(ABDA)
Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind , unless they hunt them for food . Sometimes , however , two kinds of animals come together in a partnership(伙伴关系)which does good to both of them . You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep . This is not because they want a ride , but because they find easy food in the parasites(寄生虫)on sheep . The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort . So although they can manage without each other , they do better together .
Sometimes an animal has a plant partner . The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other . This is so in the corals(珊瑚)of the sea . In their skins they have tiny plants which act as “ dustman ” , taking some of the waste products from the corals and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe . If the plants are killed , or are even prevented from light so that they cannot live normally , the corals will die .
7. Some birds like to sit on a sheep because .
A. they can eat its parasites
B. they depend on the sheep for existence
C. they enjoy traveling with the sheep
D. they find the position most comfortable
8. The underlined word “ they ” in the last sentence of the first paragraph refers to .
A. birds and parasites
B. birds and sheep
C. parasites and sheep
D. sheep , birds and parasites
9. It can be learnt from the text that the coral depends on the plant for .
A. comfort B. light C. food D. oxygen
10. What does the second paragraph mainly discuss ?
A. Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence .
B. Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily .
C. Some plants depend on each other for food .
D. Some animals live better together .

第二节 阅读下文,完成所给题目
Did you know that the distance at which two people stand when having a conversation varies from culture to culture? In some countries, people may stand quite close together, often moving their faces even closer as the conversation progresses. Studies have shown that most Americans feel uncomfortable if they stand too close to others when talking; they feel most comfortable at a distance of about 50 centimeters. In still other countries, people prefer to have even more space than 50 centimeters between them when having a conversation. Another social custom you will notice is that Americans, like many other people, often express themselves with their hands when talking. They may show friendly feelings by touching another person on the shoulder during a conversation, or they may pat a child’s head to show their affection for the child. According to the customs of some people from other countries, these expressions may be unwelcome, especially if they are made with the left hand. Many Americans are left-handed; there is no special importance given to either the left or right hand in the United States; neither one shows a lack of respect. In all such matters, however, if the use of the hands in social situations make you feel uncomfortable, a slight hesitation on your part will usually be understood by your American friends to indicate your feelings.

Being a guide is what I am looking forward to. I’ll have the chance to show them around Beijing. What’s more, I can practice what I have learned from textbooks and also gain some experience.
