You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABC? You may like eating bananas. But did you know there is such a thing as a “banana person”? How strange! Are these people from “another earth”? No. They are just Chinese people like you and me.
ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So, when a person is a banana, he or she is white inside—thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese.
Do you know why? Usually, ABCs know little about China or Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. Also, they are not interested in Chinese politics.
But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are Chinese. They are overseas (海外的) Chinese. These people may be citizens (公民) of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.
But they are not Chinese citizens. They are not people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang (杨振宁). He got the Noble Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen.
35. “ABC” in this passage stands for “_____”.
A. three English letters B. a kind lf banana
C. Chinese born in America D. Americans born in China
36. Chinese in Western countries are called “banana persons” because ______.
A. they think like Westerners but look like Chinese
B. their bodies are white inside but yellow outside
C. they were born in China but go to study in America
D. they like to eat bananas
37. C. N. Yang is mentioned (提到) here to show that _____.
A. American Chinese are great B. we love American Chinese
C. Chinese people can win Nobel Prizes D. American Chinese are not Chinese citizens
38. This passage mainly talks about ______.
A. different kinds lf bananas B. overseas Chinese
C. the Nobel Prize D. the life story of C. N. Yang

Gone are the days when men and women couldn’t associate (交往) with each other. When we are asked whether boys and girls can associate with each other, most of us will say, “Yes, of course. Why not?”
If we want to deal with the association between boys and girls properly, here are some “dos and don’ts” for you to follow.
1)Keep a normal and healthy state of mind (心态). Our schools and classes are made up of boys and girls. It is very natural for the boys and girls to contact each other and build up the friendship with the students of the other sex. Generally speaking, we should broaden the circle of the association. We should make as many friends as possible. We should have more friends of the other sex instead of one or two. We should contact the students in public instead of in secret.
2)Contact students of the other sex warmly, generously and sincerely. Don’t be too nervous or too shy in contact with a person of the other sex. In that case it is very difficult for you to make a lot of friends, as no one likes a person who is too shy to say a word. If you are too shy a person, you can also find a way out. First of all, you can contact the students with the same interest and hobby with you. As both of you have much in common, you may have much to talk about. If you keep doing like that, little by little, you will gladly find you are also as free to express yourself as others.
3)Don’t fall into the ditch(泥潭) of early love. The boys and girls at adolescence(青春期) are rich in feelings and full of imagination. They are easy to regard the friendship as a sign of love and fall in love with each other at an early age. In my opinion, boys and girls at middle school are too young and too tender to shoulder the heavy duty of love. Early love is a green apple that can’t be eaten. An apple won’t taste sweet until it is fully ripe(成熟的). Do keep out of early love.
39. The main idea of the passage is to ______.
A. tell students to keep away from early love
B. give some advice on how to associate between boys and girls
C. say contact does good not only to boys but also to girls
D. teach boys how to talk with girls
40. The underlined word “broaden” in the passage means “______”.
A. close down B. make small C. make broad D. make known
41. We should contact the students of the other sex in the following ways EXCEPT_____.
A. with a good state of mind B. in public
C. in secret D. warmly and generously
42. A person at adolescence is NOT______.
A. rich in feelings B. full of imagination
C. old enough to fall in love D. easy to regard the friendship as a sign of love
D
People who live in heavily industrialized (工业极发达的) areas do not get as much sunshine as they should. Dust floating over a city at the height of more than 4,000 feet cut between 20 and 50 percent of the sunlight and up to 90 percent of the ultraviolet light (紫外线). But dust is not the only thing to worry about. When materials for burning are burned, whether in a factory or in a house, or in the engine of a car, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are given off. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (大气) prevents loss lf heat and keeps warmth, and so raising the temperature of earth slowly. This could actually change the climate all over the world. Carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) is very poisonous and quite small amounts can kill.
Everybody wants to have a motor car, and sometimes when we are struck in a traffic jam it seems as though everybody has already got one. Unluckily, while giving us so much pleasure, cars are also poisoning us. The amount of dangerous substances (物质) sent out by a car is quite surprising. Did you know, for example, that a hundred cars can produce a third of a ton of carbon monoxide and many other poisonous substances every day? When you realize that in Great Britain there are over 1,800,000 motor cars, you can see the greatness of the problem.
What is the answer then? Scientists are trying to produce a car engine that gives no pollution at all. But what about the millions of cars already in use now? Must they all be thrown away? It would probably be very expensive to make changes in them so that they will have nothing to do with pollution.
43. According to the passage, people in big cities should______.
A. throw away their cars B. get more sunshine
C. move to the countryside D. wear masks over nose and mouth
44. According to the passage, how much carbon monoxide do the cars in Great Britain give off?
A. About 6,000 tons B. More than 6,000 tons
C. About 5,000 tons D. Less than 5,000 tons
45. Which of the following statement is NOT right?
A. No answer has been found to do away with the pollution caused by cars.
B. Millions of cars have already been equipped with (装备) new engines that give off no dirty gases.
C. It costs much to make the present cars free from pollution.
D. Scientists never stop looking for new ways to make the atmosphere clear.

When you are in a strange place or meet a stranger alone, you may feel afraid. Why? Maybe that is because you don’t know it well.
Long ago, people did not know much about countries other than their own. They were afraid to travel far away, for they did not have planes or motor engines. A few brave ones who tried to explore (探测,探险) other places either died or got lost. It may seem ridiculous (荒诞的) to us but people in those days thought that there might have been ghosts (鬼) or strange monsters (怪物) living in the other lands.
Today, we have covered the globe with our planes and telephones and satellites. It is safe and easy to travel from one place to another. We read and watch programs about other countries. We have no cause to feel afraid of people from other lands.
However, we are still afraid of life from other planets. Since we do not have enough information about life in outer space, we have stories about space monsters. This makes space travel something dangerous. In time to come, people of the future will think our science fiction stories as the most absurd (荒唐) things to believe in. They will know and be comfortable with our neighbors.
Just as Madame Curie said, “Nothing in the world is to be feared, but to be understood”, so we should not be afraid in our life.
