India is a land of festivals and fairs. Every day of the year there is a festival celebtated in some part of the country. Some festivals welcome the seasons of the year, the harvest, the rains, or the full moon. Others celebrate religious occasions, the birthdays of divine beings, saints, and gurus(revered teachers), or the coming of the New Year. A number of these festivals are common to most parts of India. However, they may be called by different names in various parts of the country or may be celebrated in a different fashion. The colorful festival of Holi(胡里节) is celebrated in most parts of India during February and March. The celebrations vary depending on regional and local traditions but the common part is exchange of colors. On the day of the Holi, people(men and women) irrespective of caste(社会地位) and creed(教义) mingle together and exchange colors. The celebrations can get wild----it is one of the few occasions of the year that the sexes are allowed to mix freely. People use tools and tricks to spray and paint friends and relatives in colour.

In last period, we have discussed the reasons why people created so many festivals. But are there more reasons? Today, let’s read a passage about the reasons of creativity.
Task1: Skimming
Read the passage and try to find the given reasons as fast as you can.
Ancient Festivals: celebration for the end of the cold weather; planting in spring; harvest in autumn; catching animals.
Festivals of the Dead: to honour the dead, or satisfy and please the ancestors, who could return either to help or to do harm.
Festivals to Honour People: as an honour to famous people or to the gods.
Harvest Festivals: to celebrate harvest
Spring Festivals: to look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring.
All festivals can let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our daily life for a little while.
Task 2: Scanning
To read the text carefully, and choose one picture on page2 to retell relative festival.
Or: interview the partner about the festivals mentioned in the text.

When people want to say that it is necessary for someone to do something, they use MUST or HAVE TO. You can use HAVE TO when someone else thinks it is necessary or there seems to be no other choice. Group discussion: Can you find out the grammar rules?Collective nouns can have a singular or plural verb. If the noun refers to a whole unit, the verb is singular. If it refers to the individual members of a unit, the verb is plural. Such collective nouns are: army, class, family, club, company, audience, public, party, government, crowd, police, band, minority and so on.
由集体名词,如group, family, class, government, team, public, enemy, crowd, company, audience, club, party, crew等作主语时,如果看成一个整体,谓语动词用单数形式,如果看成其中各成员, 则用复数形式
注意:集体名词为 people, police, cattle,谓语动词用复数形式

关系代词在定语从句中作主语时,谓语 动词的形式与句中先行词应保持一致。

areis[注意]在“one of+复数名词+关系代词” 的结构中,定语从句中谓语动词用复 数形式;但是若前有the only, 将其限定为只有一个时,谓语动词用单数形式

Play 1 Before dying
Ernie and Lars are in the hospital that their father is in. The father is lying on they bed, the elder son is reading newspaper, the other is sitting near the father.
F: My sons~
L: Ernie~
E: Just a second.
L: Ernie~
E: I’m coming.
F: Now I want give you something ……But at first please give me a glass of water.
E: OK, I’ll go and bring it.
F: It’s much better .I will give you my most prized possession.
L: How nice! ~ It is a piece of string.
E: NO! Pop why did you tear the bed sheet. We should pay for it.
F: My god! I didn’t do that. The string was found the first I in the ……U.F.O.
L: Pop, it isn’t UFO it ought to be the U.S.A.

Scene 1:
Ernie and Lars are brothers., one is a cook and the other has a broken-down factory, but he doesn’t want to sell this factory because of their father. Now the elder brother stays in the office and is waiting for the judge who will read out the will.
Ernie: “Oh, what’s this? So little money! Dad must have left something else for me. So I must wait for the lawyer to see what he will bring me.”
“Bang! Lars quickly closed the door and tried climbing out of the window. “What happened to you, Lars?” Ernie seemed to be calm.
“The workers are coming. I have to go right now.”
As he did so, the workers came in roughly. Seeing Lars was running away, he shouted angrily, “Where are you going, Lars? Go down!” Lars had no alternative but to jump down at once. “Oh, how great you are! I think you will not let me have no way out. I will return the debt next time.”
“Next time? You said like that every time, but you never do as you said, never!!”
“Never!!”
“Ok, I remember.”
“Hum, I don’t believe you any more. I will take you to the police station.”
As soon as the workers tried to drag Lars away, the lawyer came in. “I will announce their father’s dying wish, after the announcement, you can do whatever you want, ok?”
“Ok,. This is the last time, hum!”
“Last time, hum, hum!”
“You are our father’s lawyer? Oh, you’re so late. Take your seat, please. Lars, come here. Let’s listen to what the lawyer will say.”

With the flash light they climbed forward slowly. Suddenly, there was a scaring yelling coming into their ears. What’s worse, Ernie walked out of sight. Lars was more frightened than before. Just then he touched something with like hairs. “Oh, what’s this? Oh, that’s terrible! Ah……”
"Oh, who, who disturbed me? I have fed up with him!" A mouse suddenly shouted.
"Oh, banana, my favourite fruit. It makes me more beautiful. If you want to be as beautiful as me, you have to eat more bananas. Do you have a go? Oh,no, it's mine. I'd love banana, banana……(sing)"
The mouse stopped and thought for a while "Why? Why do they come here? Do they want to share the house with me? Oh, no !No way! The house is mine. It's my place!

E: introduces everyone and everyone shows his pose, then E says: “OK! Now let’s start!” then they say: “work, work!” and everybody returns his place.
R and A come, there is A knock at the door, then L opens the door. L sees R, “here you are!” and gives him a hug, but R pushes him away. R asks A for a handkerchief, and brushes his hands.
Then LA comes. L turns to LA, “this is very great man, he want to see you,” L turns to R: “this is the house owner.”
LA: “welcome to my house, I’m very glad to see you……” R, “don’t say any thing, what’s the price of the house?” E comes, “yes, my great man, I can feel you want it very much. but I think you are so selfish that never give others’ chance to live in the beautiful house. So I think an auction is necessary for you, for us and for others.”
LA: “can I talk with my brother for a while?” E, “excuse me!” E and LA go anther side. L: “it isn’t worth to do so!” R, “shut up!” L goes away. R: “cucumber!” A gives it to him.
LA: “what are you doing my dear brother, we can sell the old house successfully without any trouble!” E, “oh! Just close your eyes, and open your mouth,” E puts a sugar stick to his mouth, “then use your imagination, from the auction we can get more. And look him, he can’t help himself eating all the time, he just a mean pig. He can’t bring it which we need.”
LA: “oh, you are so clever that everything can’t cheat you!” E:“let’s make him away.”

Mouse: Oh good! They have gone! (To the audiences) Hello! I ‘m the mouse living there~ I am not Mickey Mouse, but I’m the cleverest mouse in the world! ------what? You don’t believe in me? ------ You see, what I will do to the poor brothers~~~ (laugh) Ho ho ho ho~~~
(Look around) Oh! Mousetrap! Who told them to use it? Of course it would only hurt themselves! (Move the mousetrap to the door.) And~ how about the chair? (Bite the chair)
Young: The mouse moves the mousetrap near the door and bit the chair.
Mouse: Err …… Let me see------ oil? Where is the oil? Ah! Here it is! (Spread oil everywhere)
Young: The mouse spread oil everywhere.

Young: The two brothers can’t put up with the mouse. They have used every way possible to kill the mouse, but the mouse was still living well. At last, the two brothers leave the house sadly.

A few months later the factory earns a lot of money, the brothers become rich and famous soon. Of course the mouse and the brothers are good friends. And now they are holding a press conference.
L: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our press conference. I’m so glad that you attend today’s conference. And if you have any questions please raise your hand.
(Many journalists rise they hands.)
E: Oh, the lady on the left.
LA: Sir, please tell me how you communicate with the mouse? Don’t you think it is too hard to understand the language of the mouse?
L: No, no. That’s easy. If you get along with the mouse for a long time, you can know each other very well.
E: The person over there.
MA: I want to know mouse’s name. And what do you think about the mouse?
L: Its name is Amow. It is a wise mouse.…………
E: Yeah, he is Hitler with a tail. …The lady on the right side.
LB: Can you tell me what the string stands for?
L: The string that our father gave us stands for luck, unity and family.

Students’ film review
Ernie and Lars were brothers. Ernie was a cook in a restaurant, and Lars had an old string factory from his father.
When his father died someone wanted to buy the factory, but Lars didn’t sell it and that made his wife very angry. She kicked him out. Without luck, Ernie lost his job too because a customer died in his restaurant. So they went to the old house which their father left to them. They didn’t think that house was worth too much, but when they found the blueprint of the house, they got to know it was worth thousands of dollars. So they wanted to sell it but there was a mouse in it.
They tried many ways to drive the mouse away, but all of them failed. At last they even lost the priceless house because of the mouse. But it was still the little mouse that brought the factory back to life.
From the movie, I think these two people are unlucky and unfriendly at first. Because of the mouse, they change their mind slowly. They know that unity is power and family is very important. So we must get together and I believe every difficulty will be defeated at last!

The film “Mouse Hunt” is a comedy which was made in America.
The two brothers –Ernie and Lars inherited their father’s legacies. They fell down on their luck and lost their jobs. So they had to go to their father’s old poor house because of a mouse living there. They found that the house was a missing LaRue, who was a famous architect. So the house was worth thousands of dollars. Ernie wanted very much to sell it. He thought that “A single vermin can bring you down” and tried to get rid of the moue in the priceless house. But the supermouse was so clever that the two brothers could do nothing to him but only hurt themselves.
In the auction when they thought the mouse had gone forever, the mouse come back and brought the whole house down. After that , the two brothers had nothing at all except a broken down factory their father left to them. With the help of the mouse, they restarted the factory.
What the little mouse did in the whole film was so wonderful that I could hardly forget it. When the brothers used hundreds of mousetraps to hurt it, the little mouse went through the traps skillfully and went onto the cupboard and touch some fruits off to the ground… so all the hundreds of mousetraps worked together on the two poor brothers. Just then the supermouse went away with many fruits on his back.
He is Hitler with a tail!
Form the film, I learned that nor every mouse will hurt you.-
