CPR.ramCPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation. 心肺复苏技术)
The rescuer (救助者) should first check for signs of breathing and pulse (脉搏), if neither is present, have someone phone for help. Meanwhile the rescuer should position the victim (受害人,发病人) on the back, turn the victim's head to the side, and remove any form of objects from airway.
Then tilt (使倾斜) the victim's head back, pinch (掐,捏) the victim's nostrils (鼻孔) closed, and inhale (吸气) deeply, and place the rescuer's mouth over the victim's to form a tight sill (基石,门槛). The rescuer should exhale twice slowly into the victim's mouth until the chest (胸膛) rises.
The rescuer should bend with arms held straight up and down, press 15 times on the middle of the victim's chest. Alternating (交替, 轮流) this compression with mouth to mouth resuscitation (人工呼吸) for 9 to 11 seconds or until breathing resumes (恢复).
After completing four cycles of CPR, the rescuer should check for any signs of breathing and pulse. If there is pulse no breathing, continue rescue breathing. If the victim has neither pulse nor breathing, continue CPR as necessary.16
sprained.ram To treat a sprained (扭伤) ankle, immobilize the foot and ankle to protect them from further injury. Raise the ankle above the level of your heart to reduce any swelling (肿胀). Compress (压缩) the ankle with wraps or a compressive bandage until the swelling has stopped. Apply ice to decrease swelling and pain, and then see your doctor. 16
bleeding.ramTo stop serious bleeding, lay the affected (受伤的) person down, with the head slightly lower than the trunk or elevate (举起) the person's legs. If possible elevate the wound above the level of the heart to reduce the blood flow.
Apply (应用) steady, firm pressure (压, 压力) directly to the wound using a sterile (消过毒的) cloth. Maintain this pressure until the bleeding stops, then wrap the wound tightly with gauze (纱布) bandage (绷带) and secure it with adhesive (带粘性的) tape.
If the bleeding continues and seeps (渗出) through the bandage, add more absorbent (能吸收的) material. Do not remove the first bandage. If the bleeding doesn't stop, apply pressure to the major artery (动脉) that delivers blood to the area of the injury.
When the bleeding has stopped, immobilize (固定) the injured part of the body. You can use another part of the body, such as a leg or torso (躯干), to immobilize the area. Make sure to leave the bandages in place, then get an immediate medical attention. 16
Choking ram If the choking (窒息的) individual (个人) becomes unconscious (不省人事), position the person on his or her back. Kneeling astride (跨着) the person, place your hands at the base of the rib (肋骨) cage. The heel (跟部) of one hand should be down, the fingers of the upper hand between those of the lower, grasping the palm. From this position deliver five quick upward thrusts (力推) to the abdomen (腹部) until the obstructing (障碍的) object is dislodged (驱逐). 16

5. 教学重点: Understand DR ABC and recovery position correctly.
6. 教学难点: How to deal with some emergency.
7. 教学流程:
Step 1. Revision
Check the important words and phrases in this unit.
Step 2. Leading in
Ask the students a question “What do you think is the most important in our life ” Let the students discuss and at last conclude --- Life is the most important, but it is also weak. From this, make the students value their lives.
Look at a picture, let the students say it freely and everyone knows it belongs to a kind of emergency, so we conclude --- When we face some emergency, we must keep calm and know how to deal with it, so this class we’ll learn a passage about First aid --- DR ABC.
Step 3. Listening
Make the students listen to the tape and try to remember the information as much as possible. After listening, introduce some knowledge about First aid ( some things can be found in the passage and the others belong to supplement ),
including the definition, principle, importance, training, measures and recovery position.
1) Definition
First aid is the science of giving medical care to a person before a doctor can be found. Anyone with the right knowledge can give first aid; You don’t have to be a doctor.
2) Principle
DR ABC; D stands for Danger; R stands for Response; A stands for Airway;
B stands for Breathing; C stands for Circulation.
3) Importance
Physicians believe many deaths can be prevented with proper use of CPR,
or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (心脏复苏技术). First aid, if it is quickly and correctly given, can save a person’s life.
4) Training
Just look at some pictures and let the students discuss according to what they
can see.
5) measures
Give students some knowledge about CPR, sprained ankle, bleeding and choking. Make the students listen to four short passages about them in order to practise listening. If the students have difficulty in understanding the difficult ones, give them the article through the computer.
CPR: CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The rescuer should first check for signs of breathing and pulse, if neither is present, have someone phone for help. Meanwhile the rescuer should position the victim on the back, turn the victim’s head to the side, and remove any form of objects from airway.
Then tilt the victim’s head back, pinch the victim’s nostrils closed, and inhale deeply, and place the rescuer’s mouth over the victim’s to form a tight sill. The rescuer should exhale twice slowly into the victim’s mouth until the chest rises.
The rescuer should bend with arms held straight up and down, press 15 times on the middle of the victim’s chest. Alternating this compression with mouth to mouth resuscitation for 9 to 11 seconds or until breathing resumes.
After completing four cycles of CPR, the rescuer should check for any signs of breathing and pulse. If there is pulse no breathing, continue to rescue breathing. If the victim has neither pulse nor breathing, continue CPR as necessary.
Sprained ankle: To treat a sprained ankle, immobilize the foot and ankle to protect them from further injury. Raise the ankle above the level of your heart to reduce any press the ankle with wraps or a compressive bandage until the swelling has stopped. Apply ice to decrease swelling and pain, and then see your doctor.
Bleeding: To stop serious bleeding, lay the affected person down, with the head
slightly lower than the trunk or elevate the person’s legs. If possible
elevate the wound above the level of the heart to reduce the blood
flow.
Apply steady, firm pressure directly to the wound using a sterile
cloth. Maintain this pressure until the bleeding stops, then wrap the
wound tightly with gauze bandage and secure it with adhesive tape.
If the bleeding continues and seeps through the bandage, add more
absorbent material. Don’t remove the first bandage. If the bleeding
doesn’t stop, apply pressure to the major artery that delivers blood to
the area of the injury.
When the bleeding has stopped, immobilize the injured part of the
body. You can use another part of the body, such as a leg or torso to
immobilize the area. Make sure to leave the bandages in place, then
get an immediate medical attention.
Choking: If the choking individual becomes unconscious, position the person
on his or her back. Kneeling astride the person, place your hands at
the base of the rib cage. The heel of one hand should be down, the
fingers of the upper hand between those of the lower, grasping the
palm. From this position deliver five quick upward thrusts to the
abdomen until the obstructing object is dislodged.
5) Recovery position
Give students four pictures and make the students retell what is the recovery position according to the text.
1 Roll the person onto one side. Keep the legs straight.
2 Place the hand of the person’s upper arm under his or her chin.
3 Bend the person’s leg so that he or she will not roll over.
Step 4. Reading
Read the passage carefully and pay attention to the details and then fill in the following blanks. The following sentences are the important ones in this lesson, so if necessary, explain them to the students after filling them.
The car was upside down and the driver was bleeding and screaming.
If I had known more about giving first aid, I could have helped them.
Seconds count in an emergency, and knowing what to do can mean the difference between life and death.
The most important thing to keep in mind when dealing with an emergency is to keep calm.
Many hospitals recommend that we use the letters DR ABC to remember what to do when we have to think fast.
The question will also calm the person, letting him or her know that help is on the way.
If the person is not breathing, we must try to start his or her breathing at once, using the mouth-to-mouth method.
When we have checked the DR ABC, we should give the first aid that is needed and call an ambulance.
When we have given first aid, we should put the person in the recovery position.
After finishing this exercise, let the students read the text again, according to the text and according to the introduction to the knowledge of first aid, judge whether the following methods are true or false.
1. If you see a person run into a car, you should try to lift him out of the car quickly. ( F )
2. If you see a person fall into the ice, you should jump down on the ice and ran as fast as you can to where he is . ( F )
3. If you are in a burning house, you should leave the house as fast as possible in a correct way instead of trying to take your belongings. ( T )
4. If a person is drug poisoning, you should make him throw up and then give him some milk to drink. ( F )
5. If we see somebody faint, we shouldn’t shake him hard a few times and wake him up. ( T )
6. If you cut yourself with a knife, you should wash the area of the cut, dry it and cover it with a piece of dry clean cloth. ( T )
7. If you are burnt by the fire, you should cover the injury with a dry clean cloth. ( F )
Step 5. Homework
Imagine you are having a sports meeting, suddenly one of the runners falls down and can’t stand up again. You run over to see what’s wrong. He can’t move and his legs are bleeding. Make a dialogue between your classmates and you, discussing how to deal with it.
8. 教学反思:
After having this class, I realize that the students have learned a lot. Because
they are just the students, they don’t have more living experience and most of them didn’t experience any emergency, so from learning this lesson, perhaps all the students can deal with the emergency correctly and maybe in the future they will save some person in a correct way using the knowledge in this class. I think
it is necessary and important for all the students to have this lesson and learn the practical knowledge.
Besides, I also think that from learning this lesson, the students get enough chance to show their ability in speaking, listening and reading. And at the same time, they can use their imagination to describe what they can see in the pictures.
