Dr. Jack M. Gwaltney, a professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, infected six student volunteers with virus, the most common cause of colds. A few days later, when they were coughing and sneezing, he gathered 37 more people and divided them into three groups. Group 1 members spent three days and night in the same room with one of the infected students, separated by a screen so they couldn’t touch one another. Group 2 sat around a table while an infected volunteer talked, coughed and sang to them. Group 3 held hands with an infected student for ten seconds, and then touched their own noses or eyes.
Although most scientists at the time, the mid-70s, believed colds were spread by virusladen droplets spread through the air when infected people coughed or sneezed. Gwaltney suspected physical contact might play an important role. Sure enough, of the 15 people who had touched a student volunteer, 11 became infected—compared with only one of those who had been sitting at the table, and none who had spent three days and nights together.
“The best evidence we have is that hand-to-hand contact is the most efficient way of transmitting virus,” says Gwaltney. The study was one of a series that helped establish Gwaltney’s reputation as a leading authority.
Dr. Robert Couch says,“It would not be inappropriate to call him Mr. Common Cold.”
When Gwaltney is asked how close scientists are to finding a cure, he replies, “If you mean ‘eradication’(根除), I don’t think we’re going to be able to do that with cold viruses any time soon. But if you look in the dictionary, you’ll see that‘cure’ is defined as a successful treatment. And we’re not just getting more effective at treating the symptoms(症状)—We’re getting at the root cause, too.”

Bringing Art into Hospitals
The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospitals may play an important role in helping patients to get better.
As part of nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the museums and into public places, some of the country’s best artists have been called in to change older hospitals and to soften the hard edges of modern buildings.Of the 2 500 national health service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have very valuable collections of present art in passages, waiting areas and treatment rooms.
These recent movements first started by one artist,Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital in northeastern England during the early 1970s.He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience(观众).
A common hospital waiting room might have as many as 5 000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold regular exhibitions of art!Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the out—patient’s waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975.Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist.Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates.
The effect is stricking. Now in the passages and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colours, playful images(形象)and restful courtyards.
The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering from an illness.A study has shown that patients who had a view onto gardens needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.

“Earthquake!”The word flashed in my brain. A roaring sound filled my ears. I tried to slide beneath my desk. The desk did a wild tap dance, slipping and sliding towards the centre of the room. I twisted my body and grabbed at the windowsill behind me, somehow kicking free of my dancing chair. I tried to stand. My legs skated away as if on a bucking escalator.
My fingers shook, grasped and held the windowsill tightly. Somewhere through the roar sounded the terrified scream of some wounded animal. I looked behind me and tried to steady my gaze on the other kids but the scene was a dizzy nightmare. Some of the class were sitting in the middle of the room, surrounded by chairs and desks. One girl was screaming. A boy was trying to claw his way across the floor to the door in a crazy overarm crawl.
My grip froze me to the windowsill.
I cried aloud,“I'm going to die. I'm going to die. Save me, I'm not ready to die, I'm not ready!”
I hunched forward on my knees and pressed my face against my clenched fingers. I looked at the backs of my fingers and stupidly noticed the fragile pale hairs growing out of the pores. The fingers would soon cease to exist. Somehow the impending horror of my death was too terrible to even cry about.
Suddenly, I became aware that the rocking had ceased. Perhaps I wasn't going to die.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates said that he planned to give away almost all of his vast fortune, largely to the cause of global health, during the course of his lifetime. With an estimated(估计)worth of more than $40 billion, according to Forbes, the project will be no small feat(功绩)for Gates. Having already provided the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with $24 billion to solve_______________________, Gates said that in the end his entire fortune will be put towards the cause except “a few percent left for the kids.”
So what has made the richest man in the world to put his resources so heavily into one interest.Gates believes that “the equality of opportunity” in which Americans take such pride in needs to extend to other nations around the world. Improving the health of the populations, he says, has proven to be an essential method in helping poor countries to be financially successful. “National borders allow inequalities,” said Gates: “We all need to take a more global view, rather than just saying my country is doing well. We have to step up these health problems, knowing how few resources are going into them.”
Gates said that both his parents set an example to him as a child. His father, William H. Gates, was the head of the local Planned Parenthood, and his mother, Mary, volunteered for the United Way. As he gathered his fortune, Gates knew he would eventually want to give back as well, but he didn’t expect to devote himself whole-heartedly to one project until he was about 60.
However, Gates, 47, began to question his ability to wait that long. “It seemed there was a real time urgency,” Gates said. “I started to think, How many lives could I save before then?”

One day a man was having his lunch in my restaurant. While he was eating, I was reading a newspaper as there was no other customer. He finished his mead and wanted to leave without paying. I asked him to pay but be was running away. Unluckily, I could not catch up with him as he ran so fast. So I came back sadly, saying to myself,“ Bad luck today.”
I was removing the dishes when I found something below the bowl.“What is it?” I was wondering. It was a note, a 100 - Yuan note! It was placed by the customer! What a strange customer! He paid for his dinner in such a way!

W:Can I help you?
M:Yes, I bought these here two days ago.But they seen too small and press against my foot.
W:Let me see, um, what do you think I should do?
Text2
W:How nice! How long have you had it?
M:Only a week.
W:How far have you been in it?
M:Not a bit far.Just to a picnic.
Text3
M:I am not sure when to leave for the lecture.
W:But it’s already a quarter to eight.
M:Take it easy.Fifteen minutes is quite OK.
Text4
M:Less noise, please, Can I remind you what you should do?
W:Of course. Go ahead, please.
M:Don’t touch the electricity and put everything in order. OK?
W:Sure!

M:Nice to see you again, Mary. I hope you feel better.
W:I’m fine now, but my work is too much for me and I’m afraid I will be back in the hospital soon again.

W:Maybe it was the fish or meat we ate.
M:Yes, it might have been.
W:Or the soup?
M:No, it couldn’t have been the soup because I didn’t have any.
W:Of course we sat in the sun for a long time. I suppose it could have been the sun.
M:Yes, it might have been. But we’ve got used to sitting in the sun.
W:That’s true. Now what else did we both eat? Only those lovely peaches I bought! It couldn’t have been them. We’ve used to eating peaches, and you washed them
M:No, I didn’t. I thought you had!
W:I didn’t wash them. I was sure you did. It must have been the peaches then!

M:Dr. Wilson, can I talk to you for a minute?
W:Sure, Fred, what is it?
M:I’m worried about my grade in your English class. I really want an “A”, but my job has kept me busy.
W:I see. Well, it might be hard for you to get an “A”. So far you have a “B” average. You would need a 97 or 98 on your final exam to get an “A”.Do you think you can get that high a score?
M:Probably not. That’s why I’d like to ask if I can do an extra exercise or to do something to bring my average up.
W:Well, I usually don’t do that kind of thing. I’d have to think about it.
M:The probable is I have to have a “B” average to keep my scholarship. I’ll probably get an “A” in history and a “B” in math. But I’ll get “C” s in chemistry and French.
W:That is a problem, isn’t it? You’ll have to have an “A” in English to get a “B” average.
M:Yes, but things don’t look very good for me right now.
W:Maybe I’ll give everybody a chance to write a paper for extra credit. Then you’ll have a good chance to get an “A”.
M:That would be great. Thank you very much.

M:Hello, How can I help you?
W:Good morning. I seem to have hurt my wrist.
M:Yes? How did you do that?
W:Well, I’m not actually sure. I think…I did go to a party last night and …mm…I sort of fell up the steps, you see and I may have done it then.
M:You fell on it, you think?
W:Well, I think so.I do remember falling over.
M:OK, let me have a look at it, could I? Yes, it is rather swollen. Does this hurt?
W:Yes, it does actually, yes.
M:Yes, right, well my advice is that you should go to the hospital and get it X-rayed. I think it could be broken.

W:Mr. Anderson, I am a journalist.May I ask you a few questions?
M:Yes, please.
W:How did you and your team reach the Tasadays?
M:That’s a good question! We used a helicopter but the trees were so thick in that part that we couldn’t land in the usual way. We got out of the helicopter onto a small platform built at the top of a tall tree!
W:That was rather dangerous, wasn’t it? And where did you first see the Tasadays?
W:In a row of caves. They are fairly short and very dark and have thick, black hair and brown bodies, and, of course, they don’t wear anything except banana leaves round their waist. They make wooden tools with stone knives.
W:Were they angry with you?
M:No, they’re very friendly.
W:How did you talk with them?
M:Through two interpreters: One of them translated English into the T’boli language and the other from the T’boli language to Tasaday. We know they didn’t want to move out of the jungle and didn’t change their life-style. I think they are happy to live there.
W:Thank you, Mr. Anderson.

We've been at the hotel since about ten o'clock. Mom and Dad will probably be back at midnight. They'd hoped to get back earlier but they missed the plane. They called us a little while ago. Mom was angry because the taxi driver had driven so slowly. The plane had left when they arrived at the airport. If they'd arrived fifteen minutes sooner, they would have caught it. We're waiting to hear about their trip. Neither of them had visited Washington D. C. before they went on this trip. Dad had read a little about the city before they left. After he'd read about it, he was even more excited We're anxious to tell them about our weekend, too. If they'd caught the plane, they would have been here by now. We're probably be awake for a long time. I hope I won't go to sleep before they return
