A new study says one part of the human brain may become smaller as the result of a condition known as jet lag. Jet lag results from flying long distances in an airplane. People with jet lag may feel extremely tired for several days. They may also have problems thinking clearly and remembering.
Recently a researcher at the University of Bristol in Britain reported the findings of his jet lag study, which involved twenty young women who worked for international airlines. They had served passengers on airplanes for five years. These flight attendants flew across many countries and at least seven time zones. In the study, the flight attendants had different amounts of time to recover from jet lag. Halt the women spent five days or fewer in their home areas between long flights. The other half spent more than fourteen days in their home areas.
The researcher took some saliva (唾液) from the women’s mouths to measure levels of a hormone (荷尔蒙) that increases during stress . He tested them to see if they could remember where black spots appeared on a computer screen . And he took pictures of their brains to measure the size of the brain’s temporal lobes (脑叶).
It was found that the women who had less time between flights had smaller right temporal lobes. This area of the brain deals with recognizing and remembering what is seen. The same group performed worse and had slower reaction times on the visual memory test. And their saliva samples showed higher levels of stress hormones.
The researcher believes the brain needs at least ten days to recover after a long trip. He says airline workers told him their ability to remember got worse after working on planes for about four years. Other studies have shown increased feelings of stress can cause a loss of cells in the part of the brain that controls memory.
Scientists say more tests are needed to study the effects of jet lag on the brain. They want to find out if too much jet lag could permanently affect memory.

With his standard Mandarin pronunciation, practiced skills on Chinese expressions and special humour with a Peking accent, Dashan has become a household name across China.
People have always wondered how the 36 – year – old Canadian can be so skillful in the Chinese language even though it is considered by many as one of the most difficult languages in the world. But to Dashan, the great challenge was a piece of cake due to his deep interest, proper method and the excellent environment he created for himself.
“Interest is the best teacher.” That is a universal principle. Even if the 20 – year – old Mark Rowswell --- Dashan’s real name --- hadn’t fully realized what attracted him to the Chinese department at the University of Toronto in Canada, he was already deeply interested in Chinese culture when he decided to have further study in Beijing.
Entering the Chinese department of Peking University in 1988, Dashan felt like a duck in the water. Study is always a hard job, no matter how much interest you have. Therefore, effective ways are necessary to improvement. “Learn for life and learn in life” is Dashan’s belief.
As a freshman at the University of Peking, the student did study the textbooks, which especially aimed on foreign Chinese learners. They did help him build a solid foundation.
However, that’s far from enough to grasp the Chinese language. Starting in his junior year, Dashan began to read original Chinese novels, Chinese newspapers and even the selected works of Deng Xiaoping. “Only the material for Chinese native readers could give me proper sense of the language, ” he said.
The language that is the daily means of communication is the principle that Dashan always keeps in his mind. What you have really learned depends on what you can use, not necessarily your textbooks.
To learn in daily life requires a favourable language environment, which is also necessary for improvement. Dashan admits it is hard for Chinese English learners to be brought into a good English – speaking environment, but insists, “to listen and speak as much as possible does help.”
To help Chinese English learners develop a favourable environment, Dashan took part in VCD programme --- “Travel with Dashan” --- to teach daily and up – to – date English in real – life situations.
64.Dashan could learn Chinese very well because of .
A.his interest B.practiced skills on Chinese expression
C.his special method D.special humour with a Peking accent
65.The sentence “learn for life and learn in life” here means .
A.learn things in our daily life, otherwise it will not last long
B.we should study in practice all our lives
C.life is difficult, so we’d better learn more to lead a better life
D.language is the necessary part of our daily life, so we practise it Frequently
66.Dashan comes from .
A.England B.France C.America D.Canada
67.Dashan read the selected works of Deng Xiaoping because .
A.he admired the former leader of the government
B.he hoped to learn more of the spirits of it
C.he wanted to give himself a proper sense of the Chinese language
D.they are very popular in modern times

Young men and women, if you suffer from the same eases, don’t despair. Here I’ll give you some examples to show that it is never too late for success.
Charles Darwin’s early life was a mess. In his well – educated family, he was considered to be rather dull. He was sent to Glasgow to study medicine, but he couldn’t stand the sight of blood. He was sent to a divinity (神学) school and barely managed to graduate. Therefore he quit the whole business and shipped to the South American coastline on the famous exploring ship Beagle. On that voyage, one of history’s greatest scientists was born. It was here that he collected the material for the book that would revolutionize (彻底改变) biological science: The Origin of Species.
Edison’s inventions are beyond counting, and all of us are benefited from him: You may not know that Thomas Edison, in his early teens, was so dull that his teacher tried to get him out of the class. The teachers said that his brain was addled.
Tschaikowsky never showed any interest in music during his formative years. In fact he never showed gift in any direction whatever. It was not until he was 22 that he suddenly became fired with a great passion for music, and finally became a great musician with world fame.
So who’s to say what about youth? A young boy or girl who knows what he or she wants to do in life probably has a better future. No teenagers need despair of the future, for they have that one special advantage over that greatest man alive --- time! If you don’t think time counts, look at Grandma Moses. She never sold a painting till she was 80.
68.In the writer’s opinion, many great men .
A.have a great gift for something at an early age
B.are determined and strong – willed they were still young
C.did a very bad job at school
D.achieved their success with ease when they grew up
69.What does the underlined word “despair” mean?
A.determined B.relaxed C.be nervous D.give up hope
70.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.His teacher showed preference to Edison when he was young.
B.A kid who knows what he is to do is likely to succeed.
C.Tschaikowsky became crazy about music as a boy.
D.Darwin was bored with plants and animals at his teenage.
71.Which of the following has the same meaning with the last two sentences?
A.Don’t give up hope. You can make your mark no matter how old you are.
B.If you don’t know how much time there is in your life, you will have nothing to gain.
C.If you don’t value time, you will never succeed.
D.Age is an important factor in your success.

The World Trade Organization (WTO), founded on January 1,1995, aims to encourage international trade to flow as freely as possible, making sure that trade agreements are respected and that any disputes can be settled.
In the five years since its founding, the WTO has become well – known as one of the world’s most powerful economic organizations, taking its place alongside the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
The system of global rules for international trade, however, dates back half a century to 1984 when the General Agreement on Tariffs (关税) and Trade (GATT) was formed after World War Ⅱ.
As time went by, it became clear that the GATT had two major drawbacks --- the limited areas of trade it covered, and the lack of an effective system to settle disputes.
After seven years of trade talks ending in 1994, the so – called Uruguay Round finally gave birth to the WTO, complete with an effective system to settle disputes, and new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property (知识产权).
Even after seven years of talks and 225,000 pages of agreements there were still problems, especially the difficult – to – deal – with areas of agriculture and services, which the member nations agreed to revise (修改) in 2000.
The WTO, with its head office in Geneva, has 135 members with 30 more waiting to join.
72.From the passage we know that the GATT stopped working .
A.soon after World War Ⅱ ended
B.a little more than 50 years after World War Ⅱ
C.just in the year 1994
D.seven years before the Uruguay Round talk
73.Compared with the GATT, the WTO .
A.didn’t pay enough attention to services and intellectual property
B.got its members to sign the agreements more easily
C.has got too many areas of international trade to deal with to work effectively
D.can do better to settle disputes in more areas of international trade
74.In the new century, the WTO will .
A.take the place of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund
B.have more members and do much more to settle more problems
C.make complete new rules in every area of intellectual property
D.have new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property

One day, a mother and son were taking a walk when they saw a little girl fall over. The boy wanted to help her up but his mother stopped him and said, "Don't do that, otherwise others will think it was you who knocked her down." A few days later, when she got home, the mother was shocked at seeing her son just let the fallen oil bottle lie on the ground. She asked him why he didn't put it in place, but the boy talked back, "If I had straightened the bottle up, you would have thought that I did it."
I disagree with what the mother did in the story. I think parents should not only care for their children's health, but their minds. They should let their children know it's a pleasure to help others who are in trouble.
