Text 10
Last summer, John Brown, a coach of a football team, and his wife went to a small town for their holiday. One rainy afternoon, they decided to go to the cinema. John, his wife and their three children took a bus to the cinema. They bought tickets and went into the ball. The lights were still on, and there were just six other people there. As John walked in, most of them saw him and started clapping. John was very happy and gave them a smile. “Aha, I can’t believe that they know me and they are giving me a warm welcome here.” He said to his wife, “I think they must have seen me on TV very often.”
They sat down and then a young man came to shake hands with John. “Thanks for giving me a warm welcome,” said John, “I just can’t believe that you know me.” The young man said, “I only know that the film won’t begin until at least ten tickets are sold.”

Everyone knows how the story of Cinderella ends, but did you ever really think about how she spent her days before she met the prince Her daily routine was not fascinating. She did everything from sweeping the floor to cooking the meals. If someone had asked Cinderella, “Are there any kinds of household work that you particularly hate ” she probably would have answered, “Why, none, of course. Housework is my duty!” In the real world, however, most people have definite dislikes for certain sorts of household work. Two of these tasks are ironing clothes and washing dishes.
Ironing clothes is most hated because it is not a task that can be completed quickly or thoughtlessly. Each piece of clothing must be handled individually, so ironing a basket of laundry can take hours! After ironing a piece of clothing with great caution, which requires smoothing out the fabric(布), and following the seams(接缝), you need to place it on a hanger as soon as possible. If you do not follow these directions carefully, it might become wrinkled and you have to start over. Perhaps that is why ironing is not a favorite thing to do. It calls for extreme attention to detail from beginning to end.
Another household job that many people dislike is washing dishes. Of course, some people claim that this work is no longer a problem because we have dishwashers now! However, no one would argue that dishes, silverware, and especially pots and pans washed in a dishwasher don’t come out as clean as they do when washed by hand. For this reason, many of us continues to wash our dishes by hand, but we are not necessarily happy doing it. Cleaning dishes is a job that not only takes a lot of energy but also requires the patience to wash and dry them. In addition, unlike ironing clothes, washing dishes is a thing that usually must be done every day. I don’t know how Cinderella felt about this particular task, but I believe that most people hate it as much as I do.
60. For Cinderella, doing household work is ______.
A. an assignment B. an oppression C. a responsibility D. a burden
61. Most people hate to do clothes-ironing because_______.
A. it involves careful planning B. it is a time-consuming and careful task
C. it has to be done by one person D. it must be handled carefully and skillfully
62. To avoid ironing the clothes over again, one should ________.
A. get some hangers for the ironed
B. pay special attention to the seams
C. be careful through all the procedures
D. know how to iron certain clothes material
63. Ironing is different from dishwashing in that_______.
A. it requires patience B. it is not labourious
C. it demands less care D. it is not a daily routine
C
Whether they are on arms, legs, ankles or buttocks, tattoos(纹身) are painted all over our bodies by injecting ink into our skin.
A needle attached to a hand-held tool injects ink into the cells of the dermis—a section of our skin that keeps tattoos from fading and stretching. The tool moves the needle up and down at a rate of several hundred vibrations(震动)per minute and penetrates(刺入) the skin by about one millimeter. The ink that is left in the skin after the injection process is the tattoo.
Decorating our bodies with tattoos is a popular fad among many people nowadays.
The word tattoo originates from the Tahitian word tattau, which means “to mark” and was first mentioned in explorer James Cook's records from his 1769 expedition to the South Pacific. However, some scientists believe that the earliest known evidence of tattooing dates back to markings found on the skin of the Iceman, a mummified human body that dates as far back as 3300 B.C.
More widely recognized are tattoos found on Egyptian and Nubian mummies dating from about 2000 B.C. Classical authors mention the use of tattoos in connection with Greeks, ancient Germans, Gauls, Thracians and ancient Britons.
Tattooing was rediscovered by Europeans when they came into contact with Polynesians and American Indians through their explorations. Because tattoos were considered so exotic in European and U.S. societies, tattooed Indians and Polynesians amazed crowds at circuses and fairs during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The practice of tattooing has different meanings to various cultures. Decoration was the most common motive for tattooing and that still holds true today.
In some cultures, tattoos served as identification of the wearer's rank or status within a group. For instance, the early Romans tattooed slaves and criminals. Tahitian tattoos told the history of the wearer's life.
64.Tattooists inject ink into the cells of the dermis instead of other cells because they can ______.
A. prevent tattoos from spreading and losing colors
B. be easily penetrated by about one millimeter
C. help the tool move the needle up and down
D. draw people’s attention more easily
65.The underlined word “fad” (in Paragraph 3 ) means ______.

SUSAN ISAACS, the best-selling author and screenwriter, usually gets the ideas for her novels when a character pops into her head.
After graduating from Queens College, Ms. Isaacs went to an employment agency and took a test for computer programming.
“I failed it,” she recalled. She went to work as an editorial assistant at Seventeen magazine, writing advice for the lovelorn(失恋的). In 1968, she married Elkan Abramowitz, now a lawyer. Two years later she gave up the senior editor position at Seventeen to stay home with her newborn son, Andrew, and three years later, a daughter, Elizabeth, was born.
As a retirement gift, Mr. Abramowitz gave her an electric typewriter. Ms. Isaacs freelanced(撰写)political speeches and magazine articles. While her children napped, she read mysteries. When her daughter, now 33, went to nursery school, Ms. Isaacs started writing her first novel, “Compromising Positions,” about a Long Island housewife turned sleuth(大警犬) who seeks the killer of a periodontist. It was published in 1978.
Her fourth novel, “Shining Through,” set during World War II, became a movie in 1992 starring Michael Douglas and Melanie Griffith. Ms. Isaacs also wrote and co-produced “Hello Again,” a 1987 comedy starring Shelley Long and Judith Ivey.
Ms. Isaacs, whose fiction has been translated into 30 languages, said her storytelling talent, along with a sense of humor, came from her father, an electrical engineer. He used to make up simple stories about, say, the camel that didn’t brush its teeth or the lamb that bit its nails.
It takes her about two years to write a book, she said, “taking out time to have a life.” Using a voice-recognition program, she speaks the dialogue into her computer, rather than typing. “The faster I can get it from my mind onto the page, the better for me,” Ms. Isaacs said.
Ms. Isaacs lets Mr. Abramowitz read her work first.
“He has a kind of built-in logic and the ability to cross-examine my situations and also characters,” she said. Still, “he is kind,” she added.
She’s not wasting any time. The protagonist of her next novel, a whodunit, is a woman “who has led a very superficial life,” she said, “someone who is a nice person but very concerned about fashion and makeup.”
As usual, Ms. Isaacs said she is plotting the whole book first.
“The planning out,” she said, “is the most fun.”
69. According to the passage, Susan Isaacs _______.
A. is a protagonist B. has two sons
C. left her job in 1970 D. does well in computer typing
70. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about Susan Isaacs’ novels
A. Her first novel was published in 1978.
B. Her fourth novel helped her win her fame as a star.
C. Completing a novel takes her about two years.
D. Her husband is her work’s first reader.
71. How does Susan Isaacs probably feel about her life
A. Very enjoyable B. Sorrowful C. Rather busy D. Fairly boring
72.As for her gift for storytelling, Ms. Isaacs owed it to ______.
A. her mother B. Queens College C. her father D. a next-door engineer

TOKYO—A Japanese woman charged with inflicting(造成) injury on her neighbor by blasting rock music at her house for more than two years was given a 20-month prison term Tuesday, a court official said.
Miyoko Kawahara, 59, was sentenced by the Osaka High Court, revoking(撤回)an original ruling that had given her a one-year prison term, court spokesman Takanao Kawasaki said.
Kawahara in Heguri, Nara Prefecture (state) in western Japan, was accused of causing insomnia(失眠)and headaches to her next-door neighbor by playing loud dance music almost 24 hours a day on a portable stereo she had pointed at her neighbor's house, 20 feet away.
She was arrested on April 11, 2005. The two women had a number of disagreements that police did not elaborate on(详细说明).
“The defendant(被告)ignored calls by local authorities and continuously played music at a high volume for some 29 months,” Kyodo News agency quoted presiding(首席法官)Judge Hiroshi Furukawa as telling the court.
In handing down a longer prison term than a local court ruling in April, this year, Furukawa told the court that the defendant still maintains a hostile(敌对的)attitude toward the victim and it is highly likely that she will commit the crime again,” Kyodo said.
Doctors had diagnosed the neighbor as having insomnia and headaches due to the noise. Kawahara started blasting the music in November 2002 and continued until her arrest.
Under Japanese law, those convicted of inflicting injury on another person face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 300,000 yen ($2,520).
73.Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “blasting”.

Recreational ice skating is a popular activity that can provide an ideal social opportunity. People young and old are discovering the joy of ice skating. Instructors say it’s never too late-or too early-to learn how to skate properly and enjoy the benefits of an activity that dates back centuries. “Skating not only promotes better coordination and balance, but your legs become stronger.” says Markiewicz, an instructor at Detroit’s Troy Sports Center. “It’s also great because it’s something you can do with your friends and family. When you go to the movies, you can’t chat, but at the rink(溜冰场), you can laugh and have fun.”
Markiewicz offers these skating tips for beginners young and old:
1. Sign up for lessons. A professional can show you the proper ways to skate and stop so you will have an enjoyable and safe experience. Many rinks offer instructions.
2. Use properly fitted skates. You may first want to rent skates at a local rink to determine whether you want to take lessons. Then, if you decide to go skating, buy good-quality skates that offer proper ankle support.
3. Dress warmly and appropriately. Some rinks are colder than others, but don’t overdo it. You’ll want to be able to move and feel comfortable. You’ll warm up as you skate. Sweatshirts and sweaters with a turtleneck and a lighter jacket are a good choice. Wear gloves and, if you’re outdoors, a hat. Do not wear socks that are too thick.
4. Wear a helmet. Although helmets are not required for taking lessons at most rinks, they are recommended for new skaters. A hockey helmet is best; otherwise, use a properly fitted bike helmet.
Try this winter activity at a rink near you! Head to your nearest ice rink for fun and fitness.
