"It’s over! Thank goodness!"
School was over and I was tired. I sat at the front of the school bus.
Janie, the driver, always tries to break the uncomfortable atmosphere (气氛) by talking. I try to listen politely, but usually I’m too busy thinking about my day. On this day, however, her talk was worth listening to.
"My father’s ill," she said to no one in particular (特别地). I could see worry in her eyes. I had never seen her like this before. She always meets students with a smile.
With a sudden chance of interest, I asked, "What’s wrong with him "
With her eyes wet and her voice unusual, she answered, "Heart trouble. " Her eyes lowered as she continued, "I’ve already lost my mum, so I don’t think I can stand losing him." I couldn’t answer. My heart ached for her.
I sat on the seat thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died.
I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that.
Suddenly I realized Janie wasn’t only a bus driver, which was just her job. She had a whole world of family and cares too.
I shouldn’t have been so selfish. I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver. I had judged her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant.
I shouldn’t have been so selfish and self-centered.
Understanding people is an art.

Dear Abby,
This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading your column for many years. I need an outside opinion.
I am a grandmother in my 70s and have just returned from visiting my daughter, her husband and their three dearly-loved children—all under age of 5—and I am upset with some of their parenting ways.
For example:
They lock the doors to their children’s bedroom at night because “the children might get out of their beds and walk around the house, and we may not hear them.”
If one child should get punishment, all three are punished, and if one child says a naughty word, all three are given hot sauce in the mouth.
I know these parents love their children very much, but are these ways of making them wise Please understand, it is not my aim to interfere (干涉).
-Gram
Dear Gram,
Children’s bedroom doors should not be locked. Should a flash fire break out, it would be a nightmare (可怕事). Punishing all the children when only one has earned the punishment is a way only to make them grow up to hate each other.
Children who use naughty words should not be punished with hot sauce in the mouth — they should be taught the proper and acceptable word to use instead of the naughty word.
—Abby

A thief who dropped a winning lottery ticket (彩票) at the scene of his crime has been given a lesson in honesty. His victim, who picked up the £25,000 prize, managed to trace him, and handed over the cash. The robbery happened when maths professor Vinicio Sabbatucci, 58, was changing a tyre on an Italian motorway. Another motorist, who stopped “to help”, stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.
Next day, he saw the lottery results on TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner. He claimed the 60 million lire (里拉) prize. Then he began a battle with his conscience. Finally, he decided he could not keep the money despite having been robbed. He advertised in newspapers and on radio, saying: “I’m trying to find the man who robbed me. I have 60 million lire for him―a lottery win. Please meet me. Anonymity (匿名) guaranteed.” (保证)
Professor Sabbatucci received hundreds of calls from people hoping to trick him into handing them the cash. But there was one voice he recognized―and he arranged (安排) to meet the man in a park. The robber, a 35-year-old unemployed father of two children, gave back the suitcase and burst into tears. He could not believe what was happening. “Why didn’t you keep the money ” he asked. The professor replied: “I couldn’t, because it’s not mine.” Then he walked off, spurning the thief’s offer of a reward.

72. If the story appears in a newspaper, the best title might be .
A. A Thief’s Lucky Day B. A popular Maths Professor

Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but be wants it to be something, which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him.
What visual(视觉的) artists, like painters, want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight that they brought to the artist.
Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion (动作) and response; their choices indicate(说明) that these aspects(方面) of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Contemporary artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, and that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.
If one painter chooses to paint a broken leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing(强调)something-all of which means that, consciously(有意识地) or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.
73. According to the passage, an artist is always trying to .
A. show his talents to the public
B. express something new to the public
C. create something extremely beautiful
D. attract us with shapes and colors
74.It is implied that .
A. we owe the artists a great deal
B. we can never thank the artists enough for their works
C. artists’ work should be praised world-wide
D. we should be grateful (感激的) to the artists for their work
75.From this passage we learn that
A. paintings are more meaningful than novels
B. painters are expressive than writers
C. we should be more interested in painting than in writing
D. there is always something more in an artist’s work beyond shapes and colors.
