Sandstorms hit northwestern China’s Gansu Province and North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on the first day of the year 2000. According to Sun Landong, a meteorologist(气象学家)with the Lanzhou Meteorology Observatory, visibility(能见度) was less than 100 meters in Minqin, a Gansu county near Inner Mongolia, because of sand. When visibility drops to less than 1 kilometer, it is called a sandstorm. The sandstorm in Minqin blew up dust in neighboring towns, such as Baiyin, Wuwei, Jinchang and Lanzhou, the capital city of Gansu Province. Dust-laden winds also swept into Beijing. Brought by northwesterly blowing at more than 20 meters per second, dust first reached the capital’s suburbs at 7 a.m., downtown areas at 9 a.m.. The winds, which died down during the night, brought the temperature down to as low as 8 C below zero and many flights put off their planned time from the city’s airport.
It is quite rare for sandstorms, which are frequent between March and June, to happen in winter, when the earth is frozen, The sandstorms in Gansu and Inner Mongolia do not necessarily mean there will be more of them in the spring than last year, when they were serious, but Beijing is taking it very seriously, It is reported that Beijing will spend 6 billion yuan (US 725 million) in preventing sandstorms in the capital and has already set up a special team to make sure what causes them.

What will man be like in the futuresoft5000 or even 50000 years from now We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an obvious example. Man, even live hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller.
Again, in the modem world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20%of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more --- and eventually we shell need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular , will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are in constant use, In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that men’s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These. as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will glow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then both sexes are likely to be bald!
46. Future man is likely to be different from us ______.
A. in almost every way B. in quite a few ways
C. in a great many ways D. in one or two ways
47. The reason for believing that future man will be different is that he ______.
A. began to change five hundred years ago B. never stops changing
C. never stops growing D. has recently begun to change
48. People’s heads will eventually grow larger. This is because their brains ______.
A. will grow faster than at present B. will be in constant use
C. will play an important part D. will need more room than at present
49. Future man will probably _________.
A. have bigger eyes B. get weaker eyes
C. see better D. have to wear better glasses
50. Future man’s hair will _________.
A. grow darker B. stop growing completely
C. fall out more often D. get longer
C

The Importance of Being Honest
On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood, playing his violin at the gate of the subway station. Though the music was great, people were quickly going home for the weekend. In this case, many of them slowed down their paces and put some money into the hat of the young man.
The next day, the artist came to the gate, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different than the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it on the ground and put some stones on it. Then he began playing the violin. It seemed more pleasant to listen to.
Before long, the violinist was surrounded with people, who were all attracted by the words on that paper. It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim it soon. ”
Immediately it caused a great excitement and people wondered what it could be. After about half an hour, a middle-aged man ran there in a hurry and rushed through the crowd to the violinist and grabbed his shoulders and said, “Yes, it’s you. You did come here. I knew you’re an honest man and would certainly come here.”
The young violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr. George Sang ”
The man nodded. The violinist asked, “Did you lose something ”
“Lottery. It’s s lottery,” said the man.
The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang’s name was seen. “Is it ” he asked.
George nodded and seized the lottery ticket and kissed it, and then he danced with the violinist.
George Sang is a clerk. He bought a lottery ticket issued by a bank a few days ago. The awards opened yesterday and he won a prize of $500,000. So he felt very happy after work and felt the music was so wonderful, thus he took out 50 dollars and put in the hat. However, the lottery ticket was also thrown in. The violinist was a student at an Arts College and had planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna. He had booked the ticket and would fly that morning. However, when he was cleaning up he found the lottery ticket. Thinking the owner would return to look for it, he cancelled the flight and came back where he was given the lottery ticket.
Later someone asked the violinist. “At that time you needed to pay the tuition fee and you had to play the violin in the station every day to make the money. Then why didn’t you take the lottery ticket for yourself ”
The violinist said, “Although I don’t have much money, I live happily; but if I lose honesty, I won’t be happy forever. ”

写作
The artist paid his tuition fee by playing the violin at the station. He didn’t take the lottery ticket priced $500,000. He waited for Sang to claim his ticket. He cancelled the flight to attend advanced studies in Vienna.
The violinist had a golden heart. Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us. If we behave in a misleading and dishonest way, we may succeed temporarily, but in the long run, we will be a loser. Such king people are just like the water on the mountain. Honesty is the finest, most precious, the most important thing in one’s life. Once you have the good faith, you’ll have everything; if you lose it, you’ll lose all.
It is best to begin by being honest with ourselves. We are all individuals with unique needs and desires. When we are honest about our fears, our feelings, our questions and our needs, we open the doors to get the support, the knowledge and the comfort that we seek.
