第三部分 阅读理解 (共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。
A
The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.
She said, “Hi, girl! My name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug ”
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.
“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age ” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel!”
“No seriously,” I said. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us.
“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only two secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor everyday. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die!” she said.
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn 20 years older. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men,” she added.
“The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”
She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Song of Rose”. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics (歌词) and live them out in our daily lives.
At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
56. Rose made herself known to the author in a ______ manner.

D. a nine-year-old is as old as a 87-year-old if he doesn’t do anything

Female Chinese space pioneers
CHINA plans to recruit (招募) women astronauts thanks to the lobbying of the leading women’s organization. Have you ever been in a meeting while someone was making a speech and realized suddenly that your mind was a million miles away You probably felt sorry and made up your mind to pay attention and never have daydreaming again. Most of us, from earliest school days, have been told that daydreaming is a waste of time.
“On the contrary,” says L Giambra, an expert in psychology, “daydreaming is quite necessary. Without it, the mind couldn’t get done all the thinking it has to do during a normal day. You can’t possibly do all your thinking with a conscious mind. Instead, your unconscious mind is working out problems all the time. Daydreaming may be one way that the unconscious and conscious states of mind have silent dialogues.”
Early experts in psychology paid no attention to the importance of daydreams or even considered them harmful. At one time daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illness. They did not have a better understanding of daydreams until the late 1980s. Eric Klinges, a professor, is the writer of the book Daydreaming. Klinges says, “We know now that daydreaming is one of the main ways that we organize our lives, learn from our experiences, and plan for our futures. Daydreams really are a window on the things we fear and the things we long for in life.”
Daydreams are usually very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams, which may be hard to understand. It’s easier to gain a deep understanding of your life by paying close attention to your daydreams than by trying to examine your sleep dreams carefully. Daydreams help you recognize the difficult situations in your life and found out a possible way of dealing with them.
Daydreams cannot be predicted: they move off in unexpected directions which may be creative and full of useful ideas. For many famous artists and scientists, daydreams were and are a main source of creative energy.
63. The writer of this passage considers daydreams _______.
A. hard to understand B. important and helpful
C. harmful and unimportant D. the same as sleep dreams

A. Daydreaming can give artists and scientists ideas for creations.
B. An unconscious mind can work all the problems out.
C. Professor Eric Klinges has a better idea than L Gimabra.
D. Early experts didn’t understand what daydreams were.
66. Experts now believe that _______.
A. daydreams cause some mental illness
B. daydreams are not easy to control and direct
C. the more daydreams you have, the more you’ll achieve.
D. people fear as long for daydreams
67. What is the difference between daydreams and sleep dreams
A. People have daydreams and sleep dreams at different times.
B. Daydreams are the result of unconscious mind while sleep dreams are that of conscious mind
C. Daydreams are easy to understand.
D. Daydreams are more helpful in solving problems.

When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money What should our attitude to beggars be There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.
Certainly, most of the world’s great religions (宗教) order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed Maybe what was morally (道德方面) right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their arguments.
First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil (恶行). Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one’s sense of pride and self-dependence.
Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.
It is hard to come to any final conclusion; there are various cases and we must deal with them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the giver.
68. What is mainly discussed in the passage
A. Moral deeds of people. B. Religious activities of the church.
C. Moral goodness of the giver. D. Arguments on giving to beggars.
69. What can we infer from the sentence “But has the world changed ” in the second paragraph
A. People no longer know who suffers misfortune in the village.
B. Some people will not do what was morally right in the past.
C. We don’t meet with those who need help any more.
D. Now it is the government’s duty to help the beggars.
70. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage
A. Some people dress up to pretend to be beggars.
B. Some beggars want money to help their children go to school.
C. Some beggars use the money to buy drugs.
D. Some beggars have no excuse for begging.
71. In the last paragraph, the writer thinks that it is hard to come to any final conclusion, because ______.
A. the cases can be so different B. there are so many beggars
C. there is so much money wasted D. there are so many different arguments
E
The desire to make explorations is born with man. Wherever his imagination goes, man also has a strong wish to go. A large part of human history is connected with the exploration of the world in which we live. Again and again people have set out with surprising courage and patience to look into unknown regions and lands to see what had not yet been seen, to make known the un-known. With kites, balloons and aircraft they left the ground to pass through the lower atmosphere. Now the outer space receives their attention.
Why should man take the trouble of conquering (征服) space It is hard to list the specific practical benefits that will result in. But one knows, from past experience in other areas, that man will surely see and discover new things in space that will increase our scientific knowledge, and this new knowledge will find its way into valuable practical uses. What we learn about man himself, from his experience in space, and from the effects of space and the space flight environment on him, will be extremely valuable. The new techniques developed to carry out the exploration of space, and to keep man alive in space, will certainly find practical uses in everyday life in some way. The areas that will benefit are manifold. They include communication, generation (生成) of power, transportation and travel, food production, materials, fuels and many others. But to say definitely just what the practical results will be is almost impossible.
72. The man idea of the first paragraph is that _______.
A. man desires to explore what is unknown
B. man often goes wherever his dreams go
C. man is no longer interested in the study of the land and sea now
D. man’s history is his exploration of the world
73. The underlined word "manifold" in the second paragraph probably means _______.
A. vast B. practical C. valuable D. various
74. The author seems to be in favor of (赞成) _______.
A. doubting the necessity of the space exploration
B. the exploration of space
C. exploring more in space than in other areas
D. his experiencing in space
75. In the last sentence of paragraph 2 the phrase "practical results" refers to the results_______.
A. that are gained from experience
B. that can be learned as knowledge
C. that can benefit us human beings
D. that help us make further exploration

Parents and Children
On the evening of April 19th, Lihua was watching TV while his mother was busy preparing for dinner in the kitchen. How attentive he was watching the TV program when the telephone rang. It was from a friend of his mother's, who wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to his mother. "Today is my mother's birthday " Lihua was a little puzzled. "How come that I have forgotten all about it " Lihua thought to himself, feeling ashamed.
At the story, I got deeply shocked. It is not easy for parents to bring us up. They give us lots of love and care, while we don't care for them enough. Now it's never too late to realize this and show our love and care for them.

W: Oh, I don't know. Whenever you'd like to leave is fine with me.
M: You don't have any feeling about it
W: It doesn't matter to me.

M: I've got two tickets for the film. Would you like to go with me
W: I'm sorry. I'm afraid not.
M: Why
W: A patient has just arrived. He was badly hurt in a traffic accident. He is due to be operated on at once.

M: Darling, I've decided to become a vegetarian. From tomorrow on, I will stop eating meat.
W: Why
M: Because people nowadays eat too much meat and it's healthier to eat less.
W: Is this another one of your crazy ideas It won' t last a week. Last month, in order to lose weight, you decided to jog to work every morning. That only lasted a week because you were late for work every day.
M: That's not the reason why I stopped! I stopped jogging because I pulled a muscle in my leg.
W: Well, what about the bicycle
M: What bicycle
W: Exactly! You can hardly remember you own a bike as it's been locked away in the garage ever since you bought it.
M: That's not completely true. As soon as the weather improves, I'm going to start using it again.

W: Excuse me. I'm really sorry to bother you but I do have a question.
M: It's no trouble at all.
W: I found some books in the card catalog I'd like to borrow. How do I get the books
M: I'm sorry; I should have explained that before. Take this “call slip” and fill it out with the call number, title and author of the book and your name, address, phone number and ID number.
W: What do I do once I've filled out the call slip
M: Then you can search for the book yourself, using the call number as your guide as the books are arranged numerically by call numbers.
W: Can't I ask a librarian to find it for me
M: Sure. But they are often very busy. By browsing, you might also find other materials which are of interest to you .
W: OK . Thanks a lot.

W: Welcome to TV Talk. Today' s guest is Teddy Jones. Hi, Teddy.
M: Hi, Barbara.
W: Teddy, you play the lead role on Inner-City Doctors, the popular new TV show. How do you like it
M: Well, it's great, Barbara, just great. When I first read the story, I knew I couldn't miss out on this special show.
W: And now these doctors' stories are popular with TV audiences.
M: Right. And the show deals with some big topics. We have a sad event soon. My character is told that he gets a cancer.
W: Oh, no. And just after he gets engaged
M: Yes. My character learns that life is very precious, and something that most people take for granted.
W: A good lesson for a doctor! Well, we're out of time. Thanks!
M : Bye!

M: Honey, the basketball game is about to start. And could you bring some chips and a bowl of ice cream And... uh . . . a slice of pizza from the fridge.
W: Anything else
M: Nope, that's all for now. Hey, Honey, you know, they're organizing a company basketball team, and I'm thinking about joining. What do you think
W: Humph.
M: “Humph”, what do you mean “Humph” I was the star player in high school.
W: Yeah, twenty-five years ago. Look, I just don't want you to have a heart attack running up and down the court.
M: So, what are you suggesting Should I just abandon the idea I'm not that out of shape.
W: Well…... you ought to at least have a physical exam before you begin. I mean, it has been at least five years since you played at all.
M: Well, okay, but.…..
W: And you need to watch your diet and cut back on the fatty foods, like ice cream. And you should try eating more fresh fruit and vegetables.
M: Yeah, you're probably right.
W: And you should take up a little weight training to strengthen your muscles or perhaps try cycling to build up your cardiovascular system. Oh, and you need to go to bed early instead of watching TV half the night .
M: Hey, you're starting to sound like my personal fitness instructor!
W: No, I just love you, and I want you to be around for a long, long time.

Hello, John. Welcome to the house. I'm really pleased that you can be here to look after my house while I'm away. As you know, I'm going to a conference in London. I hope to have a little time to look around. It's a great city! I do hope I manage to get to at least some of the theatres and museums. I'm looking forward to all the things I have to do at the conference, too. I'm giving a paper on Tuesday and there are a couple of really exciting events planned later in the conference program. I hope to meet up with an old teacher of mine at the conference. She taught English Literature at my old high school and we've kept in touch through letters over the years.
Would you do me a favor please I had an appointment with my doctor for a checkup on Thursday, but I don't think I can go back then. Could you please call him on 8162525 and cancel the appointment for me Thanks a lot, John. One last thing. When you leave the house, make sure the windows and doors are shut, and set the burglar alarm. The alarm code number is 9-1-2-0 and then enter. Have fun! I'll see you when I get back. This is your friend Martha, saying goodbye.
