Baths and bathing have long been considered of medical importance to man. In Greece there are the ruins of a water system for baths built over 3,000 years ago. The Romans had warm public baths. In some baths, as many 3,000persons could bathe at the same time.
Treating disease by taking bathing has been popular for centuries. Modern medical bathing first became popular in Europe and by the late 1700’s has also become popular in the United States.
For many years frequent(经常的) bathing was believed to be bad for one's health. Ordinary bathing just to keep clean was avoided(避免), and perfume was often used to cover up body smells!
By the 1700’s doctors began to say that soap and water were good for health. They believed that it was good for people to be clean. Slowly, people began to bathe more frequently. During the Victorian Age of the late 19th century, taking a bath on Saturday night became common.
In the United States ordinary bathing was slow to become popular. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, many Americans were known as “The Great Unwashed!” In one American city, for example, a person was only allowed to take a bath every thirty days! That was a law!
Frequency of bathing today is partly a matter of habit. People know that bathing for cleanliness is important to health; doctors know that dirty bodies increase the chance of diseases. As a result, in the United States, people generally bathe often. Some people bathe once a day at least. They consider a daily bath essential (=necessary) to good health.

Sitting is an art that isn’t getting passed along. People these days feel as though they have to be doing something. If they are not working, they are jogging, or playing tennis or golf, or taking courses to improve their minds or bodies—or they are parked in front of the TV. Sitting in front of the TV isn’t sitting — it’ s watching.
People used to sit a whole lot. You would walk down the street or drive down the road, and there they would be, out on the doorsteps, sitting. You could go down to the store and sit on the bench out front in the summer or around the fire in the winter. There were sitting benches out in the town square. At the garage (车库), there were straight-backed chairs. There among the oilcans and tires and spare parts, you could kick back and sit.
Houses used to have sitting rooms, where the grown-ups would go after Sunday dinner. Mom and Dad, Grandpa and Aunt Ruby would sit and digest chicken and talk about Aunt Ethel's illness, and how well the minister did today. Outside, the children would play, and the afternoon would pass by in a comfortable haze ( 悠闲的氛围 ).
That sort of thing looks like doing nothing. A recharging battery (正充电的电池) doesn’t look as if it' s doing anything either. Sitting restores your soul. If you want to enjoy a truly full life, don’t just do something—sit there.
73. What message does the author try to get through to us?
A. People should make better use of their sitting room.

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.
I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn't have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn't the type to have a career.
I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn't often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.
One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with
me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification
( 资格证书 ) if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.
Now I’ve got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren’t top of the class at school.
77. What is the author' s present job?
A. Working part-time in a college.
B. Taking care of children for a family.
C. Helping children with their schoolwork.
D. Looking after children at a kindergarten.
78. When staying with the two girls' family, the author ________.
A. was paid for extra work
B. often worked long hours
C. got much help from her boss
D. took a day off every other week.
79. Why did the author leave her first job?
A. She found a full-time job.
B. She was fed up with (=be tired of ) children.
C. She decided to attend a part-time course.
D. She needed a rest after working extra hours.
80. What has the author learned from her own experiences?
A. Less successful students can still have a career.
B. Qualifications are necessary for a career.
C. Hard work makes an excellent student.
D. One must choose the job she likes.

One of the first things a visitor does upon arrival in another country is to get to know the local money. American money is unlike the money used in many other countries, since the bills, or paper money, are all the same colour and size no matter how much it is. Visitors should be careful to look at the bill before giving it out. Besides, new bills often stick together.
The coins of every country are difficult to learn at first. American coins are represented by the cent sign. Also the size of American coins does not show the value. For example, the 10-cent coin is smaller than the 5-cent coin, although it is worth twice as much. All United States coins are silver coloured, except for the “penny” (one-cent piece), which is a brown coin.

The freshmen have different opinions on the military training at the beginning of their school life. According to the survey, a majority of them are in favour of it. They think the training help build up their body, as well as their mind. At the same time they learn to help each other and overcome difficulties together, which gain them better relationship. Most important of all, they learn to be more punctual which will be of great help to their later study. On the other hand, some students think the military training is hard and boring. It's a waste of time and of no practical use to their study. In my opinion, as a middle school student, we should take an active part in such activities during our school life.
