III Reading Comprehension: (20’)

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job. This article gives some suggestions on how to give an effective speech.
So, you have to give a speech—and you’re terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank goodness, it’s over. I’m just no good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.”
Cheer up! It doesn’t have to be that bad. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of you speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of time doing your research. Then spend plenty of time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts and graphs if they will help you make your points more clearly. Never forget your audience. Don’t talk over their heads, and don’t talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Just remember;Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief. Say what you have to say and then stop. And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience.
If you follow these simple steps, you’ll see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You’re not convinced yet/?Give it a try and see what happens.

Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. “The railway owes me £12,” she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office. “ You sold me a ticket for May22, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.”
Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office. Madam, “he said politely. “I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22.”
The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sun burnt,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”
“Yes,” she answered, shyly. “The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”
“That’s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can’t swim a bit yet. Of course, she’s only three…”
“I’m four,” the child said proudly. “I’ll be four and a half.”
Harry turned to the mother. “I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said. “But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?”
“Er, well…” the woman looked at the child.” I mean … she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.”
“A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs …let me see…£13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe £1.50. The law is the law, but since the fault was mine…”

How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his tjme in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child –things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his parents. He is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things or being punished for what he has done wrong.
When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to do as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
66. According the second paragraph, the writer thinks that____.

D. only children are interested in life

D. Adults should no longer rely on others.
69. The underlined word “responsibilities” in the second paragraph means______.
A. duties
B. jobs
C. suggestions
D. desires
70. The main idea of the passage is ______.
A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
B. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
C. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s life
D. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
A. The future of film industry
B. Lives of the famous people in Hollywood
C. The early film industry in California
D. Illusion and reality of Hollywood
E. Success and failure in searching for fame
F. The power of Hollywood
71. The USA has a great deal of power. It dominates the world in areas such as economics, politics and military strength. However, the way in which American culture has spread to many people in the world is through a far less serious area -–the huge film industry based in Hollywood, California. The word “Hollywood” suggests images of money and fame, exciting films and beautiful people. However, not everyone who goes there becomes rich and successful, and nowadays the famous Hollywood glamour is hard to find.
72. Hollywood became involved in the film industry when it was just beginning. In 1912, several film-makers decided that California was the best place to work. The weather was good and there was plenty of space to build huge studios. Before long, Hollywood was the only place to be if you wanted to make films, Actors, writers and directors all moved there and the film industry grew and grew.
73. For 40 years, Hollywood continued as the centre of the film industry. People went there from all over the USA, and all over the world. They were hoping to make their dreams come true, and become rich and famous. Of course, most of them did not succeed. So many people arrived and then went home again disappointed that there was a saying “Never buy anything in Hollywood that you can’t take on a train.”
74. Even some of the people who did become famous were unhappy in the end. Marilyn Monroe said that Hollywood was a place where they paid you $50,000 for a kiss and 50 cents for your soul. In spite of that, people still go to Hollywood look for fame. If they find it they can get paid a lot more than Marilyn’s $50,000. Top stars, like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Cruise, can now earn up to $20 million for a single film.
75. Nowadays, tourists visiting Hollywood will probably be rather disappointed. It is not really a town, but one small area hidden amongst the high-rise blocks of downtown Los Angeles. Although many rich and famous people still live nearby Beverly Hills., the Hollywood area itself is very rundown and shabby. In fact, nothing in Hollywood is quite what you expect. It is a standard belief that every part-time waitress and department store sales assistant is really an actor and every car-park attendant is really a scriptwriter, all waiting to be discovered. Even people’s looks are not real, because Los Angeles is also the world centre for plastic surgery.
