Deafness and Dullness
A man examined the ears of hundreds of children in Europe and found that about one quarter of the children were a little deaf.
These children did not know it themselves; they thought they could hear as well as anybody. The teachers thought so too, only they were quite sure that those special children were dull ones in the school. No doubt they were rather surprised when the man who examined them found that generally, the dull ones were also the deaf ones.
The same man next went to a school in England. There he asked the teachers to pick out seventy bright children and seventy dull children for him to examine. He found about twice as many deaf children among the seventy who were dull as among seventy who were bright.Dullness and deafness often go together.
From there he went to another school, where he found that most of the bright children could hear his watch tick when it was as far from their ears as fifty inches, while most of the dull children could no hear it unless it was as to them as thirty inches.
All these experiments showed that when children are a little deaf they seem dull. After doctors cure them, they can be as bright as anybody. The chances are that the better we hear, the quicker we shall understand. It is important, therefore,to have good hearing.

Recently many people especially high school students have been fascinated by a singing competition “Super Girls Voice”,which is held by Hunan TV Station.
1. A
It’s better to do something的省略,而是You’d better do something 的省略。
2. C
提示:was/were going to表示本来打算做某事。 故B项后加have也对,表示“If I hadn?t had an unexpected visitor,I would have come”。
3. C
4. D
提示:如果不定式本身为完成式,简略答语常保留have,句中ought to have相当于should have。
5. A
6. B
提示:替代词so和not可放在expect,fear,hope,suppose,believe,think,intend,be afraid等词后面,省略与上文相同的肯定或否定的宾语从句。
7. B
If given the same treatment again,he is sure to get well./He won’t come unless invited./If possible,he would want proof before he believed something.)
因此它的答语应该是(No,) I won’t。
10. C
句中made的宾语补足语是a criminal,替代它时须用so,而不能用替代词one。又如:They elected him president of the committee and did him so again two years later.
12. B
I would have gone to join your party if I had not had an unexpected friend.
I moved the table over there in order to make room for the new sofa.
1. A
4. B
提示:one指a student。
5. C
7. C
提示:be responsible for意为“对……
8. C
10. A
12. A
15. A
20. A
可选A项。
比较“Thurrock 49%; Salford 44%; Outer London 13%; Yorkshore and the Humber 35%; richmon and Harrow 18%”可知在Outer London17岁青少年辍学的比率最低。
3. B
4. A
由第9段“Outer London...dropped out of official learning” 可知。
6. C
提示:文章第二段句子“These children did not know it themselves; they thought they could hear as well as anybody” 中的as well as 与选项C中no worse than含义一致。
7. D
提示:本文第三段叙述了在英国一所学校所做的研究,句子“There he asked the teachers to pick out seventy bright children and seventy dull children for him to examine” 与选项D相符合。
8. A
提示:文章最后一段给出了该实验的结果,即“All these experiments showed that when children are a little deaf they seem dull.”
Super Girls’ Voice
Recently many people especially high school students have been fascinated by a singing competition “Super Girls’ Voice”, which is held by Hunan TV Station. Last weekend students in our class had a heated discussion about it.
Some students supporting it think highly of the competition. They think it has offered a wonderful stage to ordinary but well?singing girls to show their singing talents in public, and encourages people to pursue their dreams. What’s more, they can also develop their sense of competing during competitions.
On the other hand, the others don’t agree with them. They think a series of competitions costs lots of time and money. As most of girls are still students who should concentrate on their study at present, taking part in it is not good for their further progress.
In my opinion, it is just a successful program, which has attracted lots of audience’s attention. But seeing a bunch of girls with passion try hard to realize their dreams in the competition, we are inspired to study harder to be super girls too, just as competitors.
