In 1918, after four years of war which had left millions of people dead, the people alive began to look for a better and happier world. The cinema supplied an answer. For little money, people could forget their unhappy lives and dream of better ones. In the years between 1918 and 1939, going to the cinema became the most popular family free-time activity.
Hollywood(好莱坞) in America, made more films than any other film center in the world. The warm climate and long hours of sunlight meant that film-making was easy and quite cheap. This was also a rich part of America and there were many businessmen who wanted to make money from the film industry. At first short cowboy(牛仔) films were popular because they added excitement and adventure to people’s lives. Later comedy films were made so that people could laugh and forget their troubles.

Cats are creatures of habit. They like to go to sleep about the same time every day and for a certain length of time. They seem to have a natural clock inside them that tells them when to sleep.
Cats increase their regular sleep with occasional cat naps(打盹). Some experts feel that humans could also benefit from this habit. Cat naps help to build up energy in the body. They are also a good way to get rid of trouble ! Since cats have the same moods(情绪)as humans. some experts believe that people can improve their moods. People might become happier.
A number of famous people have copied cats by taking cat naps during the day. The naps would usually last from 15 to 30 minutes.
Winston Churchill took cat naps. So did Presidents Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson. These famous men were known for their energy. They were also able to work long hours, often into the night. Napping was their secret.
Perhaps more people could learn from cats and take naps to feel better and live longer!
60. From this selection we know that cats ________.

C Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership(伙伴关系)which does good to both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫)on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together. Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals(珊瑚)of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as "dustman", taking some of the waste products from the corals and giving in return oxygen(氧气) which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die. 64. Some birds like to sit on a sheep because . A. they can eat its parasites B. they depend on the sheep for existence C. they enjoy traveling with the sheep
D. they like to sit at a high place 65. The underlined word “they” in the last sentence of the first paragraph
refers to . A. birds and parasites??? B. birds and sheep C. parasites and sheep??? D. sheep, birds and parasites 66. It can be learnt from the text that the coral depends on the plant for . A. comfort B. light C. food D. oxygen 67. What does the second paragraph mainly discuss? A. Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence. B. Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily. C. Some plants depend on each other for food. D. Some animals live better together. D
When someone says, “Well, I guess I'll have to go to face the music,” it doesn’t mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you did not do this or that. Terrible music, indeed, but it has to be faced. At some time or another, every one of us has had to “face the music”, especially as children. We can remember father’s angry voice: “I want to talk to you!” And only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!
The phrase “face the music” is known to every American, old and young. It is at least one hundred years old. Where did the expression come from?
The first explanation came from the American novelist James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings (舞台的两侧) to go on stage. After they got their clue(暗示) to go on , they often said, “It’s time to go to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did face the orchestra (乐队) which was just below the stage.
An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience(观众) that might be friendly, or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So “face the music” came to mean: having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.
68. The expression “face the music” means ______.
A. plan to go to a concert
B. get one’s clue to do something
C. have to go through something far less pleasant
D. disobey what one's father says
69. The passage tells us that the expression was first used by _____
A. children B. novelists C. actors D. audience
70. In the last paragraph the Chinese meaning of the word “line” is _______.
A. 老板 B. 同事 C. 角色 D. 台词
71. Which of the following is not true?
A. The expression came from James Fenimore Cooper, an American novelist
B. The expression has a history of 100 years.
C. If someone doesn’t obey his boss, he will have to face the music.
D. Almost everyone has an unpleasant experience that he has had to face the music.

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents (文件) because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper. It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers , although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. "I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down," says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization.
Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week Hewlett-Packard Co. announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet the greater demand for printers .
Does all this mean environmental concerns (环境问题) have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away. " I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of, because of recycling (回收利用) ?" said Kelly Quirke , director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.
72. The growing demand for paper in recent years is largely due to ________.
A. the rapid development of small businesses B. the opening up of new markets C. the printing of high quality copies D. the increased use of the Internet
73. Environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation is ________.
A. to encourage printing more quality documents B. to develop new printers using recycled paper C. to find new materials for making paper D. to plant more fast-growing trees
74. Hewlett-Packard Co. has decided to develop new technologies because _______.
A. people are concerned about the environment B. printers in many offices are working overtime C. small companies need more hard copies D. they see a growing market for printers
75. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Computers and Printers B. E-mail and the Business World C. Internet Revolution and Environment D. Modern Technology and New Markets
