Parents and Children
On the evening of April 19th, Lihua was watching TV while his mother was busy preparing for dinner in the kitchen. How attentive he was watching the TV program when the telephone rang. It was from a friend of his mother's, who wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to his mother. "Today is my mother's birthday?" Lihua was a little puzzled. "How come that I have forgotten all about it?" Lihua thought to himself, feeling ashamed.
At the story, I got deeply shocked. It is not easy for parents to bring us up. They give us lots of love and care, while we don't care for them enough. Now it's never too late to realize this and show our love and care for them.

In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in commonly used in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans.
During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it was considered as a symbol of power. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France and later in England.
By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe.

How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child –things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his parents. He is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things or being punished for what he has done wrong.
When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to do as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
53.According the second paragraph, the writer thinks that____.
A. life for a child is comparatively easy
B. a child is always loved whatever he does
C. if much is given to a child, he must do something in return
D. only children are interested in life

A. will have little time playing
B. has to be successful in finding a job
C. can still ask for help in time of trouble
D. should be able to take care of himself
55.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. People are often satisfied with their life.
B. Life is less interesting for old people.
C. Adults are free to do what they want to do.
D. Adults should no longer rely on others.
56.The main idea of the passage is ______.
A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
B. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
C. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s life
D. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life
E
Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people, the nation and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential of that nation.
If today in America, you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars—the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are involved with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.
A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area—SPORTS. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of a mess. Too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.
A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model for young people.
Today, the rock star, the athlete and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.
What is really sad is that the young try to imitate their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American youngsters are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.
57.The hero discussed in this article means a person ______.
A. who has done something brave
B. who plays an important role in a play
C. whom people greatly admire and respect
D. who rides the waves and moves with the tides
58.What is true of the groups mentioned in this article?
A. They are not bright but are good-looking.
B. They are rich but are strict with themselves.
C. They are talented in some area but lead an indecent life.
D. They are perfect in every way.
59.According to the writer, people should hold up as their model those______.
A. who are rich and wear the latest fashion clothes
B. whose personal life is good
C. who can express people’s feelings
D. who work in the interests of the people
60.What is the writer’s attitude towards American youth’s admiration for their heroes?
A.He is understanding. B.He is critical.
C.He is angry. D.He is uninterested.
第二节:阅读下面短文,从A---F中选出最合适的标题,其中有一个句子是多余的。
A. The future of film industry
B. Lives of the famous people in Hollywood
C. The early film industry in California
D. Illusion and reality of Hollywood
E. Success and failure in searching for fame
F. The power of Hollywood
_____ 61. The USA has a great deal of power. It dominates the world in areas such as economics, politics and military strength. However, the way in which American culture has spread to many people in the world is through a far less serious area ---the huge film industry based in Hollywood, California. The word “Hollywood” suggests images of money and fame, exciting films and beautiful people. However, not everyone who goes there becomes rich and successful, and nowadays the famous Hollywood glamour is hard to find.
_____ 62. Hollywood became involved in the film industry when it was just beginning. In 1912, several film-makers decided that California was the best place to work. The weather was good and there was plenty of space to build huge studios. Before long, Hollywood was the only place to be if you wanted to make films, Actors, writers and directors all moved there and the film industry grew and grew.
_____ 63. For 40 years, Hollywood continued as the centre of the film industry. People went there from all over the USA, and all over the world. They were hoping to make their dreams come true, and become rich and famous. Of course, most of them did not succeed. So many people arrived and then went home again disappointed that there was a saying “Never buy anything in Hollywood that you can’t take on a train.”
_____ 64. Even some of the people who did become famous were unhappy in the end. Marilyn Monroe said that Hollywood was a place where they paid you $50,000 for a kiss and 50 cents for your soul. In spite of that, people still go to Hollywood look for fame. If they find it they can get paid a lot more than Marilyn’s $50,000. Top stars, like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Cruise, can now earn up to $20 million for a single film.
_____ 65. Nowadays, tourists visiting Hollywood will probably be rather disappointed. It is not really a town, but one small area hidden amongst the high-rise blocks of downtown Los Angeles. Although many rich and famous people still live nearby Beverly Hills., the Hollywood area itself is very rundown and shabby. In fact, nothing in Hollywood is quite what you expect. It is a standard belief that every part-time waitress and department store sales assistant is really an actor and every car-park attendant is really a scriptwriter, all waiting to be discovered. Even people’s looks are not real, because Los Angeles is also the world centre for plastic surgery.
