How did Ancient(古代的) People Tell Time?
Natural ways of keeping time
In ancient time, people had to use the sun and the moon to tell time.
Man-made things
The sand clock is made of two glass balls joined by a narrow neck. The
top ball was filled with sand. The sand slowly moved through the neck
into the bottom (底部)ball. People knew how much time had passed when
all the sand had fallen to the bottom ball.
People also made the water clock. They made a small hole near the
bottom of a pot. Then they filled the pot with water. inside the
pot showed how much time passed as the water dripped(滴) out of the
hole. They got up when the sun came up and worked in the fields until

Animals do not need clocks to know time.
Birds know when to fly to warmer places before winter. Some animals know when to keep more food for the cold winter months. Some fish know when it is time to move up the river and lay eggs.
Plants also have their own clocks to keep time. Plants know when to open flowers or to drop their leaves.
People also have their own body clocks. When we get used to our lives, our body clock can be very accurate(准确的). It can tell us when it is time to wake up. It can also tell us when to eat or to go to sleep. They have a way of telling time
by their bodies.

The Slow Food Movement
Fast food is very popular all over the world. In China, many people like fast food restaurants. Young boys and girls enjoy it. They can eat, listen to music and talk there. Men and women like these restaurants, too. They enjoy fast service. You can eat a bowl of noodles in two minutes. Fast food is a part of everyday life for many people.
The United States is known for its fast food. A lot of people don’t have the time to shop and cook and clean up after a meal. Today, fast food is really cheap, which makes it even more attractive. Now, however there is a group of people who would like to see us stop eating so much fast food. These people belong to the Slow Food Movement.
The Slow Food Movement started in Italy in 1996. it was begun by Carlo Petrini, a food critic who later owned a restaurant. He and his friends wanted to encourage more people to slow down and learn to prepare and enjoy good food again. They began by meeting in small groups to organize dinners and wine tasting. They also began to encourage more local farmers to go back to the old ways of growing food and caring for farm animals. They felt that food was raised carefully tasted better.
This small Italian group grew, and in 2002 the International Slow Food Movement was born in Paris. Today there are 78,000 members in 100 countries. There is also a monthly magazine, Slow, printed in six languages, including Japanese.

Isn’t it astonishing how much time we spend talking about food? “Have you ever eaten…?” “What did you have for lunch ?” and so on . An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well, milk may work in the same way!
Milk is the natural food for mammalian(哺乳动物)babies. It helps them grow strong because it is rich in protein(蛋白质),calcium(钙) and vitamins.
Milk can also help you sleep better because it calms you down.
But remember to drink milk with care. Find out how long the milk has been kept. make sure it’s fresh and hasn’t gone bad.
Don’t drink milk when your stomach is empty. Eat some bread or corn at the same time. That’ll help you take in more protein and vitamins.
