Negative calories You’ve got to be kidding me.
Is this possible Can a food actually not only have no calories, but even have negative calories Could you literally eat your way to fat loss Yes. Although all foods carry some calories, the overall effect of certain foods in our body is that of "Negative calories".
Negative calorie foods are foods that use more calories to digest than the calories the foods actually contain.
Calories from these foods are much harder for the body to break down and process. In other words, the body has to work harder in order to extract calories from these foods. This gives these foods a natural fat?burning advantage.
For example, a piece of pie consisting of 350 calories may only require 100 calories to be digested, thus a net gain of 250 calories will be added to your body fat.
But, if you eat 65 calories of a food that requires 150 calories to digest, then you’ve burnt an additional 50 calories simply by eating that food.
There are a large number of foods that combine low calories, delicious taste, and excellent negative calorie properties. To lose weight, you should not starve. Instead, eat a lot of negative calorie foods to lose that extra fat and become slim naturally.
56. The author of this passage suggests that if you want to lose weight you should_______.
A. eat foods with less calories B. eat foods with negative calories
C. starve more D. eat foods with low calories and delicious taste
57. How can you get negative calories, according to the passage
A. Eat less food than necessary.
B. Eat foods that contain more calories than the calories it takes to digest.
C. Eat foods that require more calories to digest than the calories you get from the foods.
D. Eat less food and exercise more.
58. Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage
A. Names of negative calorie foods. B. What negative calorie foods are.
C. The effect of negative calorie foods. D. How negative calorie foods work.

Most people agree that the direct, assertive(过分自信的) American personality is a virtue, but it sometimes surprises foreigners. In many cultures, respect for older people or those in positions of authority keeps others from expressing their true feelings. But in the U.S, children often argue with their parents, students may disagree with their teachers, and citizens may express opposition to the actions of the government. If the soup has a fly in it or the meat is too tough to chew, the diner can complain to the waiter, if the boss makes a mistake, an employee will politely point it out.
Some straight talk about the American character must include the admission that Americans have their faults. The extremely competitive nature of Americans is probably their worst fault. Of course, competition isn’t always bad. As a matter of fact, it promotes excellence by encouraging individuals and businesses to try to do their best. But the desire to get ahead of others sometimes causes people to do things that are unkind and even dishonest. Also, Americans admire what is practical, fast, efficient, and fresh. Sometimes they fail to understand and appreciate practices that have greater respect for more traditional, leisurely ways of doing things. On the other hand, people from other cultures may dislike the practical, challenging American lifestyle.
Despite culture differences, most foreigners give Americans credit for their virtues. Americans are generally viewed as friendly, adaptable, energetic, and kindhearted. Most newcomers to the U.S. like Americans, and the feeling is usually mutual. Perhaps the greatest American virtue is a deep interest in new ideas and new people. In a nation of immigrants, the foreigner does not remain an outsider for long.
59. In order to show the respect for older people,. .
A. Americans usually argue with them
B. people from some other cultures may sometimes hide their true feeling
C. Americans always show their true feelings
D. people from some other cultures will always express their true feeling
60. Why is the extremely competitive nature considered as one of American faults
A. Because people from other cultures fear competition.
B. Because only American people own it.
C. Because it will make people forget leisure.
D. Because it may sometimes urge people to do something bad.
61. It can be inferred from the passage that . .
A. American people are more critical of everything than people from other cultures
B. the author believes that American character has more faults than virtues
C. the author admires American virtues as they are viewed as competitive and anti traditional
D. it is difficult for newcomers to get on with Americans
62. The passage mainly talks about . .
A. American virtues B. American characters C. American faults D. American lifestyles

Burning the midnight oil before an exam or interview has an opposite effect according to a research which found that sleep is necessary for memories to be "downloaded" into the brain. "A good night’s sleep within 30 hours of trying to remember a new task is a necessary condition of having good recall (回忆) in the weeks ahead," scientists have found.
"We think that getting that first night’s sleep starts the process of memory consolidation (加强)," said Robert Stickgold, a sleep researcher at Harvard Medical School who conducted the latest study.
"It seems that memories are normally washed out of the brain unless some process nails them down. I feel uncertain that sleep is one of those things that do the nailing down," Professor Stickgold said.
Professor Stickgold’s team trained the 24 people to tell the direction of three diagonal bars(斜线) shown for a sixtieth of a second on a computer screen full of horizontal stripes(水平线条).
Half the subjects were kept awake that night, while the others slept. Both groups were allowed to sleep for the second and third nights to make up for any differences in tiredness between the volunteers(志愿者).
Those who slept the first night were much better at remembering the task while the second group showed no improvement in spite of enjoying two nights of catch?up sleep.
A further study by scientists at the Medical University at Lubeck in Germany showed that memories are laid down in two stages during the night. The first is during the deep, so?called "slow wave" sleep, which usually takes place in the first half of the night. The second, and less important stage happens during the periods of dreaming or "rapid eye movement (REM)". When people don’t sleep well in the first half of the night, their memory consolidation is almost the same as having no sleep at all.
63.Which of the following statements is correct according to Paragraph 1
A. It is necessary to burn the midnight oil before an exam or interview.
B. Sleep speeds up the loss of memory.
C. Man should have a good sleep if he wants to keep a good memory.
D. Staying up late will make you better prepared for an exam or interview.
64.It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that _______
A. some process helps memories to be washed out of the brain.
B. professor Stickgold is doubtful about whether sleep can make memories better.
C. some memories normally influence the function of the brain.
D. sleep improves the condition of memories.
65. How was the research conducted by Professor Stickgold
A. The subjects were divided into two groups.
B. All the subjects were kept awake for 3 nights.
C. One group slept at the first night but was kept awake the next two nights.
D. One group was kept awake for 3 nights but the other slept for the second and third nights.
66. What was the study result of the scientists at the Medical University at Lubeck
A. REM sleep is not important at all for the consolidation for memory.
B. Intellectual performance mainly depends on the slow wave sleep period.
C. When people sleep poorly in the first half of the night, it is almost the same as having no sleep at all.
D. REM sleep is as important as slow wave sleep in terms of memory recall.
67. The best title of this passage is_____.
A. Sleep Necessary for Memories B. The Importance of the First Stage of Sleep
C. Studies Made By Scientists About Sleep D. The Scientists’ Achievement in Sleep Research
D
Never in the history of Sierra Leone’s elections have women so actively engaged in politics or competed for parliamentary seats. In the past, women did the dancing and cooking for elections campaigning. In the May 14th elections, we saw over 168 women candidates competitive for President, Vice President and Parliamentary seats.
One would think that about 60% of these women would have emerged as winners. But it was not so, because of our cultural perception of women. We need to change our culture. Women could be active politicians. The Christians in their own way encouraged women to be preachers(传教士) but the Muslim leaders say women should not head for officiating(主持) prayers.
The same happens in certain parts of the country where women are not part of decision taken in male secret societies. This prevents them from achieving some of their goals. A senior head in one of the ministries told me that she was getting problems with some of her staff members especially the male staff. Most women that come from the Northern part of country experience such problems. Some men are saying that a woman cannot be their leader.
Some women are also prejudiced against their women folks. In the last elections, most woman did not support their colleagues. In some parts of the country, because they are not members of secret societies they were not allowed to contest for chieftaincies However, Sierra Leones not withstanding the cultural prejudice against women has witnessed women occupying high public offices. They have been appointed to head certain areas.
Sierra Leone is moving from its past culture. We need a change in our culture. Women all over the world are recognized one way or the other as they are now involved in the use of technology. We now see women as air pilots, and they even attempt to go to travel in space.
68. In the past, women in Sierra Leone . .
A. took active part in politics B. contested for parliamentary seats
C. danced and cooked for the election campaigning D. shared the equal rights with men
69. About 60% of the women engaged in election would have succeeded if . .
A. there were less prejudice against women B. less Muslim leaders had objected
C. more women had been engaged in the election D. more preachers had supported them
70. The author concludes that the women candidates can’t win the competitive vote because .
A. women is more suitable for the dancing and cooking job
B. women candidates can’t get the support of their folks
C. women prejudice still exists in today’s society
D. women are not capable enough to be a chieftain
71. The main idea of the passage is .
A. the prejudice against women in various fields
B. women in Sierra Leone, striving for their political rights
C. women in Sierra Leone, challenge for men’s status
D. women in Sierra Leone, being involved in politics

The United States is trying to improve an education system that produces millions of citizens who cannot read, write, or add—let alone finding their country on a map.
In his first State of Union message since taking office a year ago, President George Bush promised to wipe out illiteracy(文盲) in the next decade and declared that“ by the year 2008, U.S students must be first in the world in math and science achievements. ” They have a long way to go. American students were placed 14th in a recent general science test conducted in 16 countries. In a separate survey of chemistry students, the United States came 12 out of 14. In a mathematics test, they were last. According to Bush, there are 17 million illiterates in this country of 245 million people. Other estimates put the number as high as 23 million. In percentage terms, that ranks the United States alongside Niearague and below Cuba. “This nation,” Bush said in his State of the Union address, “will not accept anything but excellent in education.” Bush, who has declared himself “Education president”, and senior officials of his administration are warning that the United States will be unable to compete in the world without an educated workforce.
How to increase educational standards is a matter of debate in a country whose schools have no uniform national curriculum and are subject to a confusing variety of state and local controls. Most experts think that the problem lies at the elementary and high school levels rather than with universities-but even their graduates show huge gaps in general knowledge. Among the root causes most frequently mentioned in education debates is the low respect in which U.S. society holds teachers-in contrast to Japan and Germany. In Japan teaching is a profession of high prestige(威望) and high pay. In the United States teachers are near the bottom of the society.
72. By“the United States came 12 out of 14”(Para. 2), the author means .
A. the United States ranked 12th not 14th in the chemistry test
B. the United States ranked 12th in the chemistry test conducted by 14 countries
C. the United States progressed from 14th to 12th in the chemistry test
D. the United States ranked 12th in chemistry test and 14th in general science test
73. The cause of low educational level in America include the following EXCEPT that .
A. some problems exist in primary and secondary education
B. society keeps teachers in low respect
C. America pays more attention to economy instead of education
D. America has no uniform national courses
74. Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage
A. President Bush carried out his promise made in his first State of Union message.
B. The education in Japan and Germany is in higher level.
C. According to Bush, the number of illiterates accounts for 9% of the total.
D. Teachers in the United States enjoy good treatment and great respect.
75. Which of the following is the right order of the least-first of the percent of illiterates
A. Cuba, Japan, Nicaragua. B. Germany, Nicaragua, Cuba.
C. Nicaragua, Japan, Cuba. D. Germany, Cuba, Nicaragua.

(Negative calorie foods are foods that use more calories to digest than the calories the foods actually contain.)。
59. D 文章首段第二句提到“In many cultures respect for older people or those in positions of authority keeps others from expressing their true feelings”.
60. D 文章第二段第五句话指出“But the desire to get ahead of others sometimes causes people... unkind and even dishonest”,也就是说,极端的竞争性有时会使人误入歧途,由此可知D正确答案。
68.C 根据文章首段第二句“In the past, women did the dancing and cooking for elections campaigning可知,选项C与文意相符,故为正确答案。
73.C 文章第三段提到“whose schools have no uniform national curriculum”,“the problem lies at the elementary and high school levels...”以及“Among the root causes most frequently mentioned... the low respect in which U.S. society holds teachers”。

Dear editor,
Nowadays few people pay attention to dealing with waste batteries. I’m writing to say something about it.
Environmentalists think we should recycle waste batteries. If not dealt with properly, they will seriously pollute the environment. Above all, the battery factories should be responsible for this. At the same time, our government should learn from some foreign countries, giving the factories a subsidy to recycle and deal with waste batteries.
However, batter factories argue that it is not only their responsibility to recycle and deal with waste batteries. They have to take profits into consideration and it is a waste of labor and money to do it well.
In my opinion, all the people should be educated to protect the environment. Our government should help battery factories and we must throw waste batteries here and there.
Best wishes
Yours,
Mu Mu

M:Have you read the story “The Gift of the Magi” written by O. Henry
W:Yes. I enjoy reading his short stories. What I admire him most is that he started to write stories while he was in prison. Who is your favorite American writer, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, or Jack London
M:Jack London. He was born of a poor family in San Francisco in 1876. He left school at fourteen, and became a sailor, a hunter, and an explorer. In 1897 he went to the Klondike in Canada. London found adventures that he put into his most famous stories and novels. London continued to travel until a few years before his death in 1916. Now I’m reading his story “Love of Life”. I’m sure you will like his works.

W:Yes, I’d like to go on a sailing holiday this summer in Italy.
M:Have you been sailing before
W:No. I wanted to go to Sweden last year, but I didn’t have enough money.
M:Well it is quite expensive. Sailing holidays start at about three hundred pounds.
W:Yes, my friends went in August last year. They paid four hundred and fifty pounds each. The most I can pay is three hundred and eighty pounds.
M:Well, that should be enough. Would you like to be by the sea or a lake
W:Well, I’d prefer a lake in the mountains.

W:And how did you find Cambridge when you first arrived
M:Well. I like it here. I think the city is very beautiful.
W:What about your accommodation Was that OK
M:Yes, OK. At first I stayed with a family for three months. They were very kind to me but they had three young children and I found it difficult to study.
W:Right. I see.
M:So after three months I moved out and now I live with two other students in a student house. It’s much cheaper and we like it there.
W:Good, and what about your studies What are you studying
M:I’m doing Computing.
W:Computing. I see. Um, apart from the language difficulties, how have you found the course
M:Well, the main difficulty for me is getting time on the computers in the computer room. It’s always busy and this makes it very hard to do my practical work.
W:Can you reserve time in the computer room
M:No, … but it would certainly help if we could reserve computer time.
W:Yes, I’ll look into that and see if something can be done to improve things over there.
Text 9.

W:Huh ! And what about experience with Java or JavaScript

W:Okay, Mr. Taylor, I think I have all the information I need!
