第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

COLUMBUS, Ohio--The heart operation taking place in the pale-green operating room at the Ohio State University Medical Center was unusual. The patient, a 62-year-old man, was made to sleep, tied with blue drapes (消毒帷帘) and lying face up on a narrow table. But no one was touching him.
Instead, the operation was being performed by a robot, whose three metal arms went through pencil-sized holes in the man’s chest. At the ends of the robot's arms were tiny metal fingers, with turning wrists, which held a tiny instrument, a light and a camera. The robot's arms and fingers were controlled by Dr. Randall. K. Wolf, the surgeon, sitting at a computer in a corner of the operating room about 20 feet away.
This sort of operation, heart surgeons say, is the start of what may be the biggest change in their profession since heart bypass surgery (心脏搭桥手术) began nearly 30 years ago. “The reason we make cuts is that we have big hands,” said Dr. Wolf, the director of the surgery at Ohio State. The robot’s dainty fingers, no longer than a nail on the small finger, at the end of the long sticks could work better.
Eventually, surgeons believe, most heart surgery will be done by robots whose arms are put in through pencil-sized holes punched in patients' chests. Instead of directly staring into a patient’s body, surgeons will view magnified images of the operation on computer screens. In theory, the doctor would not have to be in the same room, or even the same country, as the patient.
56. In this passage, the underlined word “dainty” means ____.
A. small B. weak C. fat D. quick
57. According to the passage, the reason that most operations require large cuts is that ____.
A. patients have large organs B. surgeons have large hands
C. large cuts take less time D. large cuts cost less money
58. The main idea of this passage is that heart surgery by robots ____.
A. is quicker than surgery done by doctors B. was developed at Ohio State University
C. is a new and risky procedure D. may replace surgery done by doctors
59. Based on the information in this passage, all of the following conclusions are true EXCEPT that ____.
A. all doctors at Ohio State develop new surgical techniques
B. robot surgery is being developed at Ohio State
C. robot surgery will be used on many patients in the near future
D. many hospitals will eventually offer robot surgery to patients

B
Insurance companies provide a service to the community by protecting it against expected and unexpected disasters. Before an insurance company will agree to insure anything, it collects accurate figures about the risk. It knows, for example, that the risk of a man being killed in a plane accident is less than the risk he takes in crossing a busy road. This enables it to quote (报价) low figures for travel insurance. Sometimes the risk may be high, as in motor-racing or mountaineering. Then the company charges a much higher price. If too many climbers have accidents, the price rises further. If the majority of climbers fall off mountains, the company will refuse to insure them.
An ordinary householder may wish to protect his home against fire or his property against burglary (入室行窃). A shopkeeper may wish to insure against theft. In normal cases, the company will check its statistics and quote a premium (保险费). If it is suspicious (可疑的), it may refuse to quote. If it insures a shop and then receives a suspicious claim, it will investigate the claim as a means of protecting itself against false claims. It is not unknown for a businessman in debt to burn down his own premises so that he can claim much money from his insurance company. He can be sure that the fire will be investigated most carefully. Insurance companies also accept insurance against shipwreck or disaster in the air. Planes and ships are very expensive, so a large premium is charged, but a reduction is given to companies with an accident-free record.
Every week, insurance companies receive premium payments from customers. These payments can form a very large total running into millions of dollars. The company does not leave the money in the bank. It invests (投资) in property, shares (股票), farms and even paintings and stamps. Its aim is to obtain the best possible return on its investment. This is not as greedy as it may seem since this is one way by which it can keep its premiums down and continue to make a profit while being of service to the community.
60. The main idea of the first paragraph is that ____.
A. insurance companies protect the community against disasters
B. insurance companies often collect accurate figures about the risk
C. insurance companies base their decisions on the risk involved
D. insurance companies charge different prices in the same cases
61. The insurance company will usually investigate a suspicious claim to ____.
A. refuse to quote the insurance fee B. make sure that the claim is reasonable
C. decide how much the company should pay D. find out when the accident happened
62. The underlined word “premises” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “____”.
A. insurance contract (合同) B. land and buildings C. debt papers D. financial papers
63. The purpose of this passage is to ____.
A. encourage people to invest in insurance companies
B. persuade people to insure against unexpected disasters
C. explain how insurance companies operate
D. advise people how to insure their life and property
C
Teachers always plan down to the minute what their students will be doing. This is good for kids, because it teaches them to stay on task and follow a schedule. But most homes aren’t run this way. If parents do plan their children’s lives minute by minute, what happens when that child grows up and goes to college? At some point, kids need to learn to manage their own time. This can be one of the valuable skills you help your kids develop outside of school. But it generally won’t happen all by itself, because there’s a big transition that happens when kids leave the structured school environment and come home.
If you have kid stay alone at home, think hard about trying to find an adult who can be there and provide the support your child needs. If a supportive adult isn’t available, an expert named Martin recommends you find an after-school program led by experienced professionals who will engage them in creative activities, nourish them with healthy snacks, and assist them with their schoolwork. If you are at home on the contrary, to take some break after the guys get started on diversions, because it’s hard to stop and do something like homework. “If that little bit of downtime is television, good luck---getting them to do their homework” says a professor of child development at California State University, “TV is addictive.” A better way to help your child unwind is with a healthy snack. “Wait until dinner, make a plate full of energizing food. You could even dish up part of the dinner you're preparing a. little early for the kids,” she says.
While you’re sharing a snack, you can make a list of what your kids will get to do during their study breaks. The types of breaks recommended include shooting baskets, getting a drink, using the bathroom, or even playing a quick card game with parents. Your kids can be the ones to decide which breaks they’d like to take. But, as Freimuth says, your children will have to be honest about what kind of break will energize them and not upset their momentum (动量).
64. The main purpose of this passage is ____.
A. to provide some advice for the parents about children’s education
B. to explain how to prepare a pretty snack for your children
C. to explain why the parents spoil their children
D. to describe children's lives after school
65. The words “this way” in the sentence “But most homes aren’t run this way” in the first paragraph most possibly means ____.
A. to stay on the task B. to arrange everything in details

66. According to the last two paragraphs, the appropriate snacks that the parents provide will ____.
A. upset the children’s momentum B. exhaust them by lots of dirty dishes
C. make the children get addicted to TV D. bring more energy to children
67. Which of the following is NOT recommended for the break during the children’s study after class?

The business of on-line shopping so far has been disappointing for the pioneering retailers (零售商) who are already offering their services. The problem is that consumers, who say they are interested in the services, are mostly “just looking”.
The Internet offers, among other things, an electronic “mall” with scores of retailers selling everything from computer equipment to income tax preparation services. As with anything on the Internet, it is highly decentralized (分散), with no one authority keeping track of transactions (交易), so reports of sales are largely inaccurate (不准确). But many of the reports are discouraging.
But it is far too soon to sound the death bell for electronic retailing. One reason, say analysts and service providers, is that consumers are only beginning to understand the possibilities of the new technology.
On-line shopping is just the first link to a host of data bases and multimedia services, allowing customers to research their purchases (购买) and communicate directly with the seller for product service and support. The new services also promise visuals of a quality equal to those on
television.
Today, few consumers have equipment in their homes capable of receiving such images and data. But McKinsey & Co., the management consulting firm, estimates that the electronic shopping business will reach $ 4 billion to $ 5 billion a year in the United States by the year 2003. That supposes that just 11 percent of US households will have the technology needed to make online shop- ping work, says George Desvaux, a McKinsey partner.
In the end, the success of on-line shopping may turn of something as simple-and as complicated (复杂) as changing the public's idea of how to shop. “The problem with consumers”, says Mr. Desvaux, “is that it is very difficult for them to recognize whether or not they want the product until they have already tried it.”
72. By “an electronic mall” (in Line 1, Paragraph 2 ) the writer refers to ____.
A. the pioneering small businesses B. the business transaction by a computer
C. a number of functions a computer offers D. a number of shops offering services through a computer
73. On-line shopping in the US has not been doing well mainly because ____.
A. consumers only want to do research on some products
B. consumers are not very familiar with the new technology
C. consumers are not willing to spend money buying the equipment
D. consumers only want to get some relevant (相关的) information about the product
74. In on-line shopping, consumers are also able to ____.
A. do their own research on all the products
B. meet the seller on their televisions at home
C. see quality goods on sale in all big companies
D. see the products and the relevant data on their computers
75. The underlined word "that" (in Paragraph 5) refers to ____.
A. McKinsey & Co.’s estimates about the yearly sales of electronic shopping in the US
B. McKinsey & Co.'s estimates about on-line shopping in the US by 2003
C. consumers having the right equipment at home by 2003
D. the on-line shopping business in the US

Wealth and Health
Which is more important, wealth or health? Different people have different opinions.
Some people prefer wealth, holding that money can not bring everything, but without it, one can do nothing. In order to accumulate more money they can do anything. However, other people regard health as more important. Once health is lost, it is no use having a lot of money.
As far as I am concerned, I love wealth, but I value health more. Everybody wants to live a happy life. So they try their best to earn money which they can ensure they lead a comfortable life, but if happiness and comfort are achieved at the cost of their health, how can they be happy? Without health money becomes meaningless.
In my opinion, no one agrees that a wealthy person without good health can be happy. So, just do our best and keep fit.
