It looks like a mobile phone, but the service is much cheaper. It acts like a mobile phone, but only in your own city. Beyond the city walls, it’s useless.
“Little Smart”, also called “xiaolingtong”, has always been compared to mobile phones. But actually, it is more like one of those cordless phones(无绳电话) used around the home. The only difference is that this one reaches much further than from the bathroom to the living room. It can travel across an entire city.
Cheap costs are the main reason for the success of Little Smart. It? costs 25? yuan a month for the line and about 0.1 yuan per minute to use. A mobile phone, on the other? hand, can cost four or five times as much. What’s more, unlike mobile phones, there’s no fee(费) for incoming calls. So these low charges have attracted many users. ?
But, Little Smart is not really that smart. Users often complain about its bad voice quality. And there are not as many stations to pick up its signals as there are for mobiles. “I couldn’t receive a phone call if I was on a bus,” said Li Ping, a user in Hangzhou. “It worked fine when I stood still, but there were breaks in signal when I was moving.”
Scientists are trying to make Little Smart more user-friendly. Messaging and Internet access(接入) have been added to the service. And the latest Little Smart handset even has color screen.

Well, Mrs. Evans, I’ve done my best to look after David. I’ve tidied his room up every day, got him a meal together whenever he needed one and made sure he’s always had a clean shirt to put on. It’s not been easy, with two of my own to worry about, as well. David had the best of attention, I must say. But now because I asked him to give up bringing that American friend to his home he has got quite miserable and unfriendly. He comes in at all hours and his behavior---- well, it’s quite hard to put up with---- and it’s all because of this friend. I’m sure he’s a bad influence. You see, David’s a visitor and doesn’t fully understand our ways.
He used to study most evenings. He’s got through quite a bit of work. He did up his room quite nicely, with bookshelves and large posters. He’d ask Mr. Smith and me up for a drink and cheer us up with songs from his country. He’s very good at the guitar, you know.
I don’t want to appear as if I’m running after him, but it’s about time we made it up. I’m sure he’s upset because I told him off. It might be a good idea to take him out for a meal, perhaps even with his friend. I don’t know whether it will do any good but we can try. I’m glad I’ve had this little chat with you, Mrs. Evans, and I’ll let you know how I get on.
( ) 60. Mrs. Smith believes that David is not the cause of the quarrel but that the main cause is __________.
A. Mr. Smith B. too much homework
C. David’s behavior D. David’s friend
( ) 61. Mrs. Smith wants to make up the quarrel by _______.
A. cooking a meal B. inviting David and his friend out
C. running after David D. giving them drinks
( ) 62. David’s present attitude to Mrs. Smith is ________.
A. unfriendly B. cheerful
C. very attentive D. incomprehensible
( ) 63. David is ________.
A. an American friend B. a singer
C. a visiting student D. Mrs. Smith’s son

Our surroundings are being polluted faster than nature and man’s present efforts cannot prevent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry, more cars, larger cities, and the growing use of man-made materials.
What can explain and solve this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man—by his desire(欲望) for a modern way of life. We make “increasing industrialization(工业化)” our chief aim. So we are often ready to offer everything: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from the countryside into the citied, eager for the benefits of our modern society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years pollution has become a serious problem.
Isn’t it time we stopped to ask ourselves where we are going—and why? It makes one think of the story about the airline pilot who told his passengers over the loudspeaker, “I’ve some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we’re making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we’re lost and don’t know where we’re going.” The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when spoken of our modern society.
( ) 64. Man cannot prevent the world from being polluted because _________.
A. the population of the world is increasing fast
B. people use too many man-made materials
C. we have more and more industry
D. we are producing more cars, trucks and buses
( ) 65. According to the passage, what does man value most among the following?
A. Industry B. Health C. Clean air D. The future of the children
( ) 66. The story about the airline pilot tells us that _______.
A. man knows where the society is going
B. people do not welcome the raid development of modern society
C. man can do little about the problem of pollution
D. the writer is worried about the future of our society
( ) 67. What does the writer really want to say in this passage?
A. With the development of technology pollution has become a serious problem.
B. Lower the speed of development to stop pollution.
C. It’s time we did something to reduce pollution.
D. As industry is growing fast, pollution is the natural result.
(D)
It is often difficult for visitors to understand Americans' lack of desire for privacy. There are not walled gardens and closed gates. Their yards normally run into one another without fences; they often visit one another's homes without being invited or telephoning first; they leave their office doors open while they work.
Their lack of desire for privacy probably results from their history as a nation. America is a big country. There have never been walled cities in the United States, nor was there need for Americans to protect themselves from neighboring states. During the early years. America had so few settlers that neighbors were very important they were not to be shut out by doors and fences. Neighbors offered protection and helped in the hard work of settling the land. They depended upon each other.
From the nation's early history has come the desire for openness rather than privacy. Visitors will notice this desire in a number of small ways; there may be rooms in American homes that do not have doors or that have glass walls. If you notice that people forget to close your door when they leave your room, do not think that this is rude. Help them to learn that you would like it to be closed, or else become used to new way. In either case, be patient with the differences.
( ) 68. The visitors to America sometimes have trouble understanding _______
A. Americans' way of living
B. Americans' style of life
C. Americans' lack of desire for privacy
D. Americans' openness
( ) 69. According to the passage, which of the following is not true?
A. The Americans' lack of desire for privacy is related to their history.
B. There are walled gardens and closed gates in the USA
C. The settlers in the early years needed neighbors' help.
D. Visitors to the U. S. are not used to Americans 'openness.
( ) 70. During the early years, people were never shut out by doors because
A. there have never been walled cities in America
B. there was no need for Americans to protect themselves from neighbors
C. they depended on each other
D. they were friends
( ) 71. According to the passage, visitors will notice Americans' desire for openness in a way
A. they never have fence
B. they often visit one another's homes after being invited
C. their homes never have doors or glass walls
D. they leave the office doors open while working

Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, especially their parents, don’t know them as well their friends do. In large families, it is often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice. It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or many friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication is very important in children’s growing up, because friend can discuss something difficult to say to their family members.
However, parents often try to choose their children’s friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of “choice” is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions?
Who choose your friends?
Do you choose your friends or your friends choose you?
Have you got a good friend your parents don’t like? ( ) 72. Many teenagers think their _______ know them better than their parents do. A. friends B. teachers C. brothers and sisters D. classmates
( ) 73. When teenagers stay alone, the usual way of communication is to _________.
A. go to their friends B. talk with their parents

Super Girls’ Voice
Recently many people, especially high school students, have been fascinated by a singing competition “ Super Girls’ Voice”, which was held by Hunan TV Station. Last weekend students in our class had a heated discussion about it.
Some students think highly of the competition. They think it has offered an opportunity to ordinary but well-singing girls to show themselves in public, and they can also develop their sense of competing. What’s more, it has changed the traditional view of beauty.
On the other hand, the others don’t agree with them. They hold (the view) that competitions take lots of time and energy. As most girls can’t be devoted to their study, taking part in it is not good for their further progress. What’s worse, it may misadvise the young today.
In my opinion, it is a successful program, but we shouldn’t admire Super Girls only for their popular songs, and we should have real heroes to learn from.
