Everybody likes a winner, and there are always people ready to cheer for a good winner. But who has ever heard a song for the man who comes in second? So this is in praise of the almost winner, the nearly champion, the next to the biggest, the second best. This is the song of Mister Two.
You hear unflattering names for Mister Two. "Alsoran", they call him, and "runner-up". Names that make you think of a fellow who couldn't quite make it. Don't let that fool you.
Ask the winner of any race how good a man Mister Two is. He will tell you it's Mister Two who made him run so fast, Mister Two is pressing hard at his heels threatening always to overtake and pass him.

It's the salesman with nearly as many orders. It is the Company with the product almost as good. It's Mister Two.
In this country, we're proud of the quality of our champions. Our big men come very big. Our fast men run very fast. Our wise men are the wisest and our greatest men are the greatest that a country could hope to be blessed with. And why is that? Couldn't it be because great Mister Two's growing naturally in a land where the race is always open and everybody can run? So this is for you, Mister Two. This is your song. This is for all the days you tried for first, and came in second. It's for the nights when you wonder if you ought to go on trying, since nobody seems to notice...
We notice, Mister Two. We know the score. Winner or not, you're a natural champion. There couldn't be a race without you, Mister Two.

I remember the way the light touched her hair. She turned her head, and our eyes met, a momentary awareness in that noisy fifth grade classroom. I felt as though I'd been struck a blow under the heart. Thus began my first love affair.
Her name was Rachel, and I mooned my way through the grade and high school, stricken at the mere sight of her, tongue-tied in her presence. Does anyone, anymore, wander in the shadows of evening, drawn by the pale light of a window—her window—like some unlucky summer insect?
Her beauty made me awkward(笨拙的) and my voice crack(沙哑) is like some impossible dream now. I would catch sight of her, walking down an aisle of trees to or from, and I'd become a fool. She always seemed so charming.
At home, I'd relive each meeting between us, suffering at the thought of my shortcoming. We eventually got to know as we entered our adolescence, she knew I had a case on her, and I sensed her emotional tolerance for me. " Going steady" implied a maturity we still lacked. Her Orthodox Jewish upbringing and my own Catholic belief made even kissing a distant prospect(前景), however strongly desired.
At any rate, my love for Rachel remained without result. We graduated from high school, she went on to college, and I joined the Army. When World War II broke out, I was sent overseas. For a time we wrote, and her letters were the highlight of those terrible endless years.
I mentioned the possibility of marriage in my nest letter, and almost immediately her replies became less frequent, less personal. Her Dear John letter finally caught up with me while I was awaiting discharge. She gently explained the impossibility of a marriage between us.
Looking back on it, I must have recovered rather quickly, although for the first few months I believed I didn't want to live. Like Rachel, I found someone else, whom I learned to love with a deep and permanent commitment that has lasted to this day.

Today, there are many avenues open to those who wish to continue their education. However, nearly all require some break in one's career in order to attend school full time. Part-time education, that is, attending school at night or for one weekend a month, tends to drag the process out over time and puts the completion of a degree program out of reach of many people.
Besides, such programs require a fixed time commitment, which can also negatively affect one's career and family time. Of the many approaches to teaching and learning, however, perhaps the most flexible and accommodating is that called distance learning.
Distance learning is an educational method, which allows the students the flexibility to study at his or her own pace to achieve the academic goals, which are so necessary in today's world. The time required to study many be set-aside at the student's convenience with due regard to all life's other requirements.
Besides, the student may enroll in distance learning courses from actually any place in the world, while continuing to pursue their chosen career. Tutorial assistance may be available via regular airmail, telephone, facsimile machine, teleconferencing and over the Internet.
Good distance learning programs are characterized by the inclusion of a subject evaluation tool with every subject. This precludes the requirement for a student to travel away from home to take a test. Another characteristic of a good distance-learning program is the same as Of the distance-learning course with the same subject materials as those students taking the course on the home campus.
The degree should also be the same whether distance learning or on-campus study is employed. The individuality of the professor/student relationship is another characteristic of a good distance-learning program.
In the final analysis, a good distance learning program has a place not only for the individual students but also the corporation or business that wants to work in partnership with their employees for the educational benefit, professional development, and business growth of the organization.
Sponsoring (赞助的) distance-learning programs for their employees gives the business the advantage of keeping career-minded people while contributing to their personal and professional growth through education.
64. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a disadvantage of part-time education?
A. It requires some break in one's career.
B. It tends to last too long for many people to complete a degree program.
C. It affects one's career.
D. It gives the student less time to share with the family.
65. What benefit will distance-learning program bring to a business?
A. Employment of more talented people.
B. Good image of the business.
C. Better cooperation with universities.
D. Further training of employees and business growth.
66. What benefit will distance learning bring to an employee of a business?
A. Professional growth. B. Good relationship with the employer.
C. Good impression on the employer. D. Higher salary.
67. Which is not the characteristic of distance learning?

Perhaps only a small boy training to be a magician at the Hogwarts school of magic could cast a spell so powerful as to create the biggest book launch ever. Wherever in the world the clock strikes midnight on June 20th, his followers will rush to get their paws on one of more than 10million copies of " Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". Bookshops will open in the middle of the night and delivery firms are drafting in extra staff and bigger trucks. Related toys, games, DVDs and other merchandise will be everywhere. There will be no escaping Potter-
mania.
Yet Mr Potter's world is a curious one, in which things are often not what they appear. While an excitable media is helping to promote the launch of J. K. Rowling's fifth novel, about the most adventurous thing that the publishers have organised is a reading by Ms Rowling in London's Royal Albert Hall, to be broadcast as a live webcast. Hollywood, which owns everything else to do with Harry Potter, says it is doing even less. Incredible as it may seem, the guardians of the brand say that, to protect the Potter franchise(特许权), they are trying to maintain a low profile. Well, relatively low.
This is a Shocking success by any measure, especially as Ms Rowling has long demanded that Harry Potter should not be over-commercialized. In line with her wishes, Warner says it is being extraordinarily careful, at least by Hollywood standards, about what it licenses and to whom. It is now in the process of making its licensing programme even more restrictive(严格化)
The deal with Warner ties much of the merchandising(相关商品) to the films alone. Warner agrees that Ms Rowling's creation is a different sort of commercial property, one with long-term potential that could be damaged by a typical Hollywood marketing blitz, says Diane Nelson, the studio's global brand manager for Harry Potter. It is vital, she adds, that with more to come, readers of the books are not away from them. "The evidence from our market research is that enthusiasm for the property by fans is not becoming weaker. "
72. When the author says "there will be no escaping Pottermania", he implies
that .
A. Harry Potter's appeal for the readers can't be resisted
B. it is somewhat unbelievable to be so crazy about the magic boy
C. craze about Harry Potter will not be over in the near future
D. Hogwarts school of magic will be the biggest attraction world over
73. Ms Rowling's reading in London's Royal Albert Hall is mentioned to show .
A. publishers are really adventurous in managing the Potter's business
B. businesses involved with Potter are moving along in an unusual way
C. the media are promoting Pottermania more actively than Hollywood
D. businesses are actually more credible than media in Potter's world
74. Paragraph 3 intends mainly to show Warner’s .
A. determination to promote Potter B. consistence in conducting business
C. high regard for Ms Rowling’s request D. careful restrictions to media
75. It can be concluded from the last paragraph that
A. products of Potter films have brought enormous profits to Warner
B. current Hollywood's marketing of Potter may damage its potential
C. readers could get tired of Ms Rowling’s writings sooner or later
D. Warner will maintain the same strategy with Potter in future

W: Do you have an account with us?
M: Yes, I have a checking account here.
W: Please write your account number on the back of the check.
M: Is that all you need?
W: Could I see one more piece of identification?
M : Will a driver' s license do?
W: Yes. That'd be fine.
(Text 8)
W: Michael, do you go out to work?
M : Not regularly. I used to have a job in a publishing company, but now I do the things I want to do. Some of them got paid
like lecturing and teaching, while others don't.
W: What are the advantages of not having to go to work from nine to five?
M : Ah... there' re two advantages exactly. One is that if you fed tired, you don' t have to get up, and the other is that you
can spend your time doing things you want to do rather than being forced to do the same thing all the time.
W: Do you really enjoy working at home?
M: Yes, I do.

M: Hi, Jane. Welcome back. How was the West Coast?
W: Terrific. I had a wonderful time. It was really nice to get away from the city for a while.
M: What did you think of Los Angeles?
W: It was all fight. I liked it better than I thought I would. It' s very clean and spacious, and it' s gut a lot of trees. The problem is transportation. The bus service is terrible, and of course, they don' t have any subway, so it' s a little difficult to get around. We had to rent a car.
M: And was the weather good?
W: Oh, yes. It was nice and warm in Los Angeles and cool but comfortable in San Francisco.
M: Cool in San Francisco? That's surprising.
W: Yeah, it surprised me a bit, too. We didn't take any sweaters or anything, and they say it' s always like that in August.
Anyway, I loved it. It' s probably the most beautiful city in the US-all those hills, the bay, and those charming old Victorian houses.
M: So, you like it better than Los Angeles?
W: Oh, yes. There's much more to see and do. And because it's smaller than Los Angeles, it's a bit easier to get around. There are lots of buses and streetcars, and of course, the cable cars, too.

Different countries and different races have different manners. Before entering a house in some Asian countries, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In some European countries, even though shoes are very muddy, this is not done. A guest in a Chinese house sometimes does not finish a drink to show that enough has been had. In a Malay house, too, a guest always leaves a little food. In England, a guest always finishes a drink to show that he or she enjoys it.
We should learn about the customs of other races, so that they will not think us ill-mannered. But people all over the world agree that being well-mannered really means being kind and helpful to others, especially to those older or weaker. If you remember this, you will not go very fax wrong.
Here are some examples of the things that well-maanered people do and do not do. They never laugh at people when they are in trouble. They are always kind either to people or animals. When people are waiting for a bus, or in a post office they line up to wait for their turn. On the bus, they give their seats to older people who are standing. If they accidentally bump into someone, or get in their way, they say "Excuse me" or "I'm sorry".
They say "Please" when making a request, and "Thank you" when they receive something. They do not sit down until other persons are seated. They do not talk too much about themselves. When they' re eating, they do not speak with their mouths full of food.

范文: Dear Chen Li,
I' m glad to hear from you. You asked me about the difficulties you may meet with when you get here in UK. Now, I'd like to tell you something about it.
First, you may have the problem about the language although you think you are well prepared. You may find it difficult to communicate with the natives, because many of them have a strong accent. Besides, you may not get used to the western food here or even hate to have it, What's more, you may feel lonely and miss your family and friends, especially in the very beginning.
However, you needn't wonT about it. Several weeks later, you will get used to everything here and love the place, and I' II also try my best to help you when necessary.
Best wishes !
Yours, Wang Ping
