What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius(天才), like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old question and the answers to them are still not clear.
We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.
Parents should also be careful about what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”
56. A person _______ is more likely to become a genius.
A. whose parents are clever
B. often thinking about difficult problems
C. often helped by his parents and teachers
D. born with a good brain and putting it to active use
57. It is better for parents _______.
A. to praise and encourage their children more often
B. to be hard on their children
C. to leave their children alone with nothing to do
D. to give their children as much help as possible
58. Which of the following is not true according to the article?
A. Parents play an important part in their children’s growth.
B. The less you use your mind the duller you may become.
C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.
D. Just being born with a good mind is not enough.

Global warming is now believed to have set off a chain reaction wiping out entire frog (青蛙)populations and could possibly drive many species (物种) to death, a new study suggests. Using records of sea-surface and air temperatures, researchers determined that harlequin frogs are disappearing nearly in step with the warming climate. At least 110 species of brightly colored harlequin frogs once lived near streams in the Central and South America tropics. Nearly two-thirds disappeared in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
According to researchers, the Earth’s rising temperatures increase cloud cover on tropical mountains, leading to cooler days and warmer nights. This creates the perfect growing conditions for chytrid fungus (壶菌)— a skin fungus that causes deadly infections in amphibians (水陆两栖动物).
“Disease is the bullet that’s killed the frogs,” said study leader J. Alan Pounds. “But climate change is the main cause. Global warming is causing great damage to amphibians, and soon will cause unbelievable losses of biodiversity (生物多样性).”
The fungus kills frogs mostly in cool highlands or during winter, which had scientists thinking that low temperatures made it more deadly. However, this evidence shows it grows best between 63 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit, suggesting that it grows well in warm years as well. In 2004 it was reported that nearly one-third of the world’s 6,000 species of frogs face death. But it’s not just bad news for frogs. As global warming and the emergence of infectious diseases continue, the two will cause an immediate threat to biodiversity and a growing challenge for humans.
“The good news, if there is any, is the new findings will open up avenues of research that could provide scientists with the means to save the amphibians that still survive,” Bruce Young said. “If this cloud has any silver lining, that’s it.”
63. The first paragraph uses harlequin frogs to show that ________.
A. over two-thirds of frogs have disappeared
B. there were ever 110 species of harlequin frogs
C. entire frog populations are reducing a lot
D. the warming climate leads harlequin frogs to reduce
64. According to the passage, the global warming will directly lead to the following results EXCEPT _______.
A. great losses of biodiversity B. the spreading of fungus among humans
C. cooler days on tropical mountains D. chytrid fungus growing well
65. It can be inferred that faced with the future of the amphibians, Bruce Young was _______.
A. disappointed B. low spirited C. hopeful D. happy
66. The purpose of the passage is mainly to tell readers that ________.
A. more frogs are dying with global warming
B. global warming has an effect on animals
C. animals are related to each other
D. harlequin frogs will cover the whole world
(D)
Parents of young children can get a great deal of information about how children learn and develop. Findings from one study are argued by another and parents are left wondering if they will ever figure out how to give their baby the best start in life. What are parents to do? How can parents raise their children without constantly worrying that they are not doing enough?
Parents have such a huge job. Sometimes just making it through the day without a trip to the emergency room is a major success. On top of everything else, if parents believe that every moment has to be teaching moment, then we are creating a generation of anxious parents. That is not a good deal for our children.
So take a deep breath, parents. Parents can do a great job without getting a Ph. D., in early childhood development!
There are certain things we know for sure about early childhood development. We know that the first three years of life are important to brain development, but the brain continues to develop and children continue to learn well past teens. A child’s brain is making important connections from birth to age 3 — connections that allow him to talk, read and reason. However, the brain continues to change throughout life and is capable of learning into old age.
Another thing we know is that children are natural, active learners. Most will learn on their own, although some children may require specialized supports. Regardless, when provided with a safe environment, children will explore and learn in a way and at a pace that feels right for them. The role of the parent or caretaker is to provide the environment that enables the child to explore and learn. The motivation for a child to learn comes from the pleasure in learning. Children need “down time” too, so providing a child with constant, strict stimulation (刺激) can turn a child away from learning.
67. The first paragraph is mainly to ________.
A. show the importance of a child’s early start in life
B. tell readers how to educate children
C. start a topic for the passage to discuss
D. indicate there’re many findings about children’s development
68. To make children have healthy development, parents _________.
A. had better provide children a good environment
B. should do anything for their children’s development
C. had better buy various products for their children
D. should often get information from a Ph. D.
69. The underlined words “down time” in the last paragraph refer to the time for children to _________. A. read B. learn C. sleep D. relax
70. What of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Parents Become Doctors of Their Children.
B. Most Children Will Learn on Their Own.
C. Recent Study on Children’s Development.
D. Turn a Child Away from Learning.
