1. Find out the birthdays of a few pupils in the class.
2. Write the date of your birthday on the board, e.g. September 19. Point to the date and say “This is my birthday. My birthday is on September 19th. Ask the “When’s my birthday ” Check that the pupils are saying on rather than in and the th at the end of the ordinal number is clear.
Step3 While-task
1.Write the numbers 1 to 20 on the board in a row. Write th next to number 19. Tell the pupils that when we say the date we add th to most numbers. Add th to numbers 4 to 20.
2.Point to number 1. Ask the pupils is they know what we add next to 1
when we say dates. Write st and say we have a special way of saying munber one when “it’s a date.” We say first. Write the word first on the board. Ask the pupils to say the word after you.
3.Repeat the procedure to teach second and third. Continue by showing the pupils how the spelling changes for fifth, ninth, twelfth and twentieth. Write 21, 22 and 23 underneath 1, 2 and 3. Ask the pupils to guess how to we write twenty-first, twenty-second and twenty-third. Ask the pupils to guess how to spell thirtieth and how to change 31 into a date. Tell the pupils to count with you from first to thirty-first.
4.Pick a pupil’s birthday. Ask the pupils to stand up. Then tell the rest of the class (Name’s) birthday is in (month). Invite the other pupils to guess when his/her birthday is. Model the way to ask by guessing yourself, e.g. “Is your birthday on June twenty-third ” Repeat the procedure with other pupils’ birthdays.
5. (Books open.) Show “Thansparency.” Explain that Koko is asking her friends about their birthdays. Read Koko and Ken’s conversation and ask the pupils to repeat it after me.
6. Ask the pupils to work in pairs to role-play Koko and Ken.

1.(Books open.) Show the pupils there are three dates next to the picture of each child. Tell the pupils to listen. Play the “Pupil’s Book Casstte.”

Bring in the directory or floor plan of a nearby shopping mall.
Show the pupils the floor plan of a shopping mall or draw a simple one with three floors on the board. Then draw and write a shopping list of things to buy that the pupils already know, e.g. apples, stamps, a book, etc. Tell the pupils that this is a shopping list. Ask the pupils “Where you can buy these things. Revise supermarket, post office and bookshop.
Label the lowest floor i.e. the ground floor. Explain the word ground. Number the other floors 1st , 2nd, etc, Remind the pupils that these are same as the numbers used for dates.
Generally speaking, outside of the United States, especially in Europe, the floor of a building that is on the same level as the ground is called the ground floor. The floor above it is the first floor. In the United States, the floor that is on the same level as the ground is called the first floor. The floor above it is the second floor.
Write the names of the shops on the floor plan. Say, for example, “I want to buy some apples and biscuits. Find out the birthdays of a few pupils in the class.
Write the date of your birthday on the board, e.g. September 19. Point to the date and say “This is my birthday. My birthday is on September 19th. Ask the “When’s my birthday ” Check that the pupils are saying on rather than in and the th at the end of the ordinal number is clear.
While-task
1.Write the numbers 1 to 20 on the board in a row. Write th next to number 19. Tell the pupils that when we say the date we add th to most numbers. Add th to numbers 4 to 20.
2.Point to number 1. Ask the pupils is they know what we add next to 1
when we say dates. Write st and say we have a special way of saying munber one when “it’s a date.” We say first. Write the word first on the board. Ask the pupils to say the word after you.
3.Repeat the procedure to teach second and third. Continue by showing the pupils how the spelling changes for fifth, ninth, twelfth and twentieth. Write 21, 22 and 23 underneath 1, 2 and 3. (Books open.) Show “Thansparency.” Explain that Koko is asking her friends about their birthdays. Read Koko and Ken’s conversation and ask the pupils to repeat it after me.

1.(Books open.) Show the pupils there are three dates next to the picture of each child. Tell the pupils to listen. Play the “Pupil’s Book Cassette.”
2.Ask the pupils to listen once more. Tell them to circle the correct dates this time.

Ask the pupils to work in pairs and ask each other “Is your birthday on… ” until they guess the date of their friend’s birthday. See if they remember the month from the More to do section of B1.
