He looked at us and said, "I 38 you could have met my dad. He was a big man and strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he 39 like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas, foul-weather coat and overalls with the rain hat 40 down over his brow. No matter how much my mother washed them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish."
Frank's voice 41 a bit as if he were back to his childhood. "When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. His truck was older than he was, which you could hear coming for 42 . As he would drive toward the school, I would shrink down into the seat hoping to 43 ."

He paused and then went on, "I 47 that day I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to the school, he had his 48 big smile. He started to lean toward me, 49 I put my hand up and said, 'No, Dad."
"It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way, and he had this 50 look on his face. My dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear 51 . I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked out of the windshield. 'You are right, 'he said, 'You are a big boy --a man. I won't kiss you any more. '"

Dear Irene,
Many thanks for your letter of 20th December to Waiming and me. Waiming's mother sent it to us here in England. I thought I had better reply myself since, as you know, your brother is not very good at writing letters.
You asked whether Waiming's application for a scholarship had been successful. Well, as you can see by now, it was. He is doing a one-year postgraduate course in world history here at Lancaster University. The little house we live in is near the university. We have to buy a used car which is necessary because the bus service here is very poor.
We arrived in England at the beginning of September, and stayed in London for three weeks with my cousin Know, who owns a large restaurant there. This was the first time he had met my husband. Then we went to Cambridge for a week, where Waiming had to attend a meeting, and after that we came up to Lancaster and had two weeks to find somewhere to live and got organized before Waiming's course began. The weather has been quite a change from home. Last week we had some snow, the first we had ever seen. We went outside and threw snowballs at each other, just like children!
We got on well with most of the English people we have met, although we had some difficulty at first understanding the northern accent.
Well, that's about all our news. Waiming's course is going well, and if he passed his exams we will be free to return home in July.
--Sally

July 16th was a bad day for Mr. Arthur Johnson. In the morning, he set off from his home in Santa Barbara, California. It was the start of his summer holidays and he decided to visit friends at Las Vegas, then he hoped to go fishing in Lake Mead, 40km. from Las Vegas.
Johnson's troubles started while he was driving happily across the Mojave Desert. His car went wrong and he tried to repair it. Then, to make matters worse, his attempts to start the car drained (耗尽) the battery and left it useless. After Johnson had waited an hour in the hot sun, a Canadian driver, John Williams, stopped and tried to help him. When both men failed, Williams promised to telephone a workshop to ask it to send a truck to pull the car away and repair its fuel pump.
Johnson left the keys in his car and sat in the shade of a large tree. Soon he fell asleep. While he was sleeping, a repair truck arrived from San Pedro (the nearest town) and pulled his car away. Later on, Johnson woke up and thought that somebody had stolen his car. He started to walk back towards San Pedro but a police car stopped him to find out why he was walking in the desert.

Maybe it is true that we do not know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also true that we do not know what we have been missing until it arrives.
Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they will love you back. Do not expect love in return; but if it does not, be content it grew in yours.
It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone.
Do not rely on one's appearance, it can deceive. Do not rely on wealth, even that fades away. Rely on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.
There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them.
Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be,because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.
Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too.
The happiest of people do not necessarily gave the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who cry, those who have been hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tired, for only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives.
The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.
68. The writer thinks the trouble with some people is that they __________.
A. always take a long view about problems B. look at problems all-sidedly

69. Which of the following statements true according to the passage
A. If you give someone your love, you are sure that she will give her love to you in
return.
B. We often don't know what we have lost until it happens.
C. If someone accepts your love and he doesn't give you his love in return, you should
be angry with him.
D. If it takes you an hour to love someone, you will easily forget her.
70. If you put yourself in another's position, _____________.
A. you shouldn't do those things that will hurt you and other people
B. you will do what you want to do however dangerous it is to people
C. you should depend on other people
D. you should depend on wealth

Within a few short years, girls in Europe have become heavier smokers than boys, for reasons experts still fail to understand, according to a British study presented (递交) last week to an international conference on smoking.
Anti-smoking activists (积极分子) at the second "Tobacco or Health" conference in the Canary Islands pointed out that while adults(grown-ups) were giving up smoking in ever growing numbers, more and more young people were taking up the habit, particularly girls.

In Western Europe, girls were more likely than boys to smoke. In Germany or in England, one third of the girls were smokers compared to one in four boys. In Eastern Europe, the girls "still fall behind" those in the Western Europe but were "catching up" quickly, said the study.
The study dealt with the behaviour of 15-year-old in seven European countries over four year periods between 1986 and 1998.
The percentages of young women smoking went from 17 percent to 36 percent in Austria, from 17 percent to 28 percent in Norway, from 21 percent to 28 percent in Hungary.
In the seven countries and regions studied Austria, Finland, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales--more girls smoked than boys in 1998, with the exception of Hungary.

In my country , men usually go to restaurants on their own. They always take their shoes off before they go in. Then they usually sit on the floor around a small, low table. In the evening they often sing songs.
You usually take chocolates or flowers. But you always take an odd number of flowers, and you remove the paper before you give them to the hostess(女主人).You can also send flowers before you arrive. You don’t usually take wine except when you visit very close friends.
We always offer our guests something to drink when they arrive, tea, coffee or perhaps water or soft drinks. We think it is polite to accept a drink even if you’re not thirsty. If you visit someone, you always stay for a few drinks. When you have had enough to drink, you tap your cup or put your hand over it. If you say no, your host will insist(坚持) that you have more to drink.
People’s private lives are very important so they never ask you personal questions about your family or where you live or your job. They never talk about religion or matters of finance(财政), education or politics, but usually stay with safe subjects like the weather, films, plays, books and restaurants.
It’s difficult to know when to leave, but an evening meal usually lasts about three or four hours. When the host serves coffee, this is sometimes a sign that the evening is nearly over, but you can have as much coffee as you want.
If the invitation says eight o’clock then we arrive exactly at eight. With friends we know well, we sometimes arrive about fifteen minutes earlier.
Clearly it depends on the occasion, but most dinner parties are informal(非正式的). The men don’t usually wear a suit, but they may wear a jacket and tie. Women are usually smart but casual.

July 16th was a bad day for Mr. Arthur Johnson. In the morning, he set off from his home in Santa Barbara, California. It was the start of his summer holidays and he decided to visit friends at Las Vegas, then he hoped to go fishing in Lake Mead, 40km from Las Vegas.

Within a few short years, girls in Europe have become heavier smokers than boys, for reasons experts still fail to understand, according to a British study presented (递交) last week to an international conference on smoking.
Anti-smoking activists (积极分子) at the second "Tobacco or Health" conference in the Canary Islands pointed out that while adults were giving up smoking in ever growing numbers, more and more young people were taking up the habit, particularly girls.
One 15-year-old in four is a regular smoker, according to a study made in 27 countries in Europe and the United States, Canada and Israel by Edinburgh University together with the World Health Organization.
In Western Europe, girls were more likely than boys to smoke. In Germany or in England, one third of the girls were smokers compared to one in four boys. In Eastern Europe, the girls "still fall behind" those in the Western Europe but were "catching up" quickly, said the study.
The study dealt with the behavior of 15-year-old in seven European countries over four year periods between 1986 and 1998.

May I have your attention, please Now I’d like to make a speech here.
With the improvement of living standard, there is a lot of waste on campus. For example the students leave the lights on in the daytime, water running after washing and remains of a lot of food after eating on the table. Some of the students even ask their parents for pocket money. So it is high time that we had to deal with the problem. The reasons are as follows:
First, the bad habit of being wasteful will have a bad effect on their own character. Secondly, it adds financial burden to their parents. Last but not least, it also exhausts the world's very limited natural resources, water and electricity.
But how to reduce the waste In my opinion, it is everybody's business to fight against waste. On one hand, I should start with myself to save everything. On the other hand, I'd like to remind my friends here to take the lead in reducing the waste.
