模块十 Unit 1 单词精讲
Part I (Reading)
1. cattle
「解析」cattle 复数名词,意为“牛(总称),家养牲畜”,其后所接谓语为复数。如:
a herd of cattle 一群牛 twenty head of cattle, 二十头牛;
Cattle are at grass. 牛群在牧场上吃草。Cattle feed on grass. 牛吃草。
2. yearly
「解析」yearly形容词,副词,意为“每年(的),一年一次(的)”。 如:
a yearly conference/a conference held yearly 一年一度的会议
类似词还有:monthly“每月(的),一月一次(的)”, hourly“每小时(的),一小时一次(的)”等。
3. claim
「解析」 claim 作动词时,常用以下几种意思。
(1)(指灾难、 事故等)使(某人)失踪或死亡,如:
The earthquake claimed thousands of lives. 地震夺去数以千计的罹难者的生命。
(2) 要求或索要(某物)(应得的权利或财物),如:
After the Duke's death, his eldest son claimed the title. 公爵死后, 其长子要求继承爵位。
(3) 声称; 宣称; 断言,如:
She claims (that) she is related to the Queen/claims to be related to the Queen. 她声称和女王有亲属关系。
4. target
「解析」target作动词时,通常用于被动语态,瞄准某物,如:
They found the missiles targeted on Britain in time. 他们发现了瞄准英国的导弹。
target也可作名词,意为“目标,靶”
The embassy is an obvious target for terrorist attacks. 大使馆是恐怖分子攻击的明显目标。
“受批评等的人或事物;批评的目标、对象”
No one wants to become the target of scorn. 没有人想成为受轻蔑的对象。
也可以作定语,如:a target date 预定日期(为完成计划等订立的)
5. smoothly
「解析」smoothly为副词,意为“平滑地;平稳地”,如:
The engine is running smoothly now. 发动机现在运转得很顺畅。
Things are not going very smoothly.(There are troubles, interruptions, etc.)事情进展得不太顺利。
Part II (Grammar and usage)
1. interest
「解析」interest作不可数名词,意为“利息”,常用短语:
pay interest on a capital sum 付一笔资金的利息; the rate of interest(the interest rate)利率; interest at 10% 利率为10%;an interest-free loan 无息贷款
interest为可数名词,意为“兴趣”,常用短语:
feel, have, show, express (an) interest in sb or sth 对某人或某事物觉得有、有、表现有、表示有兴趣
interests通常作复数,意为“令人感兴趣的事物,爱好”,如:
a person of wide, narrow, varied, limited interests 兴趣广泛、狭窄、多样、有限的人
interests通常作复数,意为“好处,利益,福利(advantage, benefit)”“利润、股份”
look after/protect one's own interests 照顾、保护、保卫…自己的利益
business interests 企业股份
interest 作动词,意为“使…注意、感兴趣”,如:
a topic that interests me greatly 使我大感兴趣的题目
interested 作形容词,意为“对…感兴趣的”,如:
interested listeners 感兴趣的听众 an interested look 显出好奇的样子
I shall be interested to know what happens. 我很想知道情况会怎样。
interesting作形容词,意为“有趣的;引起兴趣的”,如:
interesting people, books, conversation 有趣的人、书籍、谈话
2. weaken
「解析」weaken 作动词,意为“变弱”“减弱、动摇、犹豫”,如:
They watched her gradually weaken as the disease progressed. 他们观察到她随着病情变化身体也渐渐衰弱下去。
They have not yet agreed to our requests but they are clearly weakening. 他们还没有同意我们的要求, 但态度已明显软化。
3. casual
「解析」casual作形容词,意为(1)“偶然的” (2)不经意的、马虎的、临时的,(3)漠不关心的、不负责任的 (4)(衣物)便服的、非正式的
常用短语:
a casual encounter, meeting, visit邂逅、不期而遇、不经意的拜访
a casual remark 漫不经心的话
a casual glance at a book 胡乱看一本书
a casual observer, reader, etc 马虎的观察者、 读者等
casual wear 便装
其副词为casually,常用短语:meet sb casually 巧遇某人;casually dressed 穿得随便的;casually employed 短期雇用的
其名词为:casualness

Part I (Reading)
1. put pressure on
「解析」put pressure on sb (to do sth) 意为“迫使某人(做某事)”,如:
The birth of twins put pressure on them to find a bigger flat. 他们生了双胞胎, 不得不寻找一套较大的住房。
常用短语:under pressure 受有压力的, 压缩的,如:
The gas is stored under pressure in the tank. 该气体在压缩状态下贮存于罐中。
She is constantly under pressure and it is affecting her health. 她经常负担很重, 因而影响了健康。
2. on top of
「解析」on top of意为“另外、此外”,如:
He gets commission on top of his salary. 他除了薪水之外还得到佣金.
On top of borrowing 50, he asked me to lend him my car. 他向我借了50英镑, 此外还向我借汽车。
on top of sth /sb 在…的上方或上边,如:
Put this record on top of the others. 把这张唱片放在其它唱片上面。
(be/feel) on top of the `world 非常愉快或自豪(尤指因获成功或好运)
3. at risk
「解析」at risk意为“有危险;冒风险”,如:
put one's life at risk 冒生命危险
The whole future of the company is at risk. 公司的整个前途受到威胁。
at risk to sb/sth 冒失去或殃及某人/某事物的危险,如:
He saved the child at considerable risk to himself/to his own life. 他冒着极大的生命危险救了那个孩子。
at the risk of (doing sth) 冒可能(做某事)的危险,如:
At the risk of sounding ungrateful, I must refuse your offer. 我甘受拂逆盛情之嫌, 也必须谢绝你的提议。
at one's own risk 自担风险(同意不要求赔偿损失、 损害等),如: Persons swimming beyond this point do so at their own risk. 游泳者超越此界限若有意外后果自负。
4. without doubt
「解析」without (a) doubt 意为“无疑地,确实地”,如:
He is without doubt the cleverest student I've ever taught. 他确实是我所教过的学生中最聪明的。
常用短语还有:
no doubt 无疑地; 很可能,如:
No doubt he means to help, but in fact he just gets in the way. 他确实是想帮忙, 然而事实上却只是帮倒忙。
beyond a/any doubt;beyond all (possible) doubt无疑地,如:
She was beyond all doubt the finest ballerina of her day. 她无疑是她那个时代最优秀的芭蕾舞演员.
in doubt不肯定的; 不确定的,如:
Their acceptance of the contract is still in doubt. 他们是否接受那合同还说不准。
5. at a crossroads
「解析」 at a/the crossroads意为“(人生、经历等)处于关键时期, 面临重大抉择”,如:
Our business is at the crossroads. (If this deal succeeds, our future is assured; if not, we shall be bankrupt.) 我们的商号正处在紧要关头。(倘若此番交易成功, 前途自无问题, 否则就要破产。)
6. be dependent on
「解析」be dependent on sb./ sth. 意为“依赖于…,从属于…” “取决于…”,如:
Older people may seek their own friends rather than become too emotionally dependent on their sons and daughters. 老年人可以找自己的朋友而不会在情感上太依赖他们的子女。
Success is dependent on your efforts and ability. 成功与否得看你的努力和能力。
其反义词组为be independent of sb./ sth.“脱离…;独立”“与…无关”
The country became independent of France in the sixties. 这个国家在六十年代脱离法国独立。
They went camping so as to be independent of hotels. 他们去露营, 免得住旅馆。
Part II (Grammar and usage)
1. in debt
「解析」in debt意为“债务;欠款”,如: If I pay all my debts I'll have no money left. 我若还清所有欠债就分文不剩了。
常用短语:get/run into debt负债; get out of debt 还清欠款
Part III (Task)
1. show off
「解析」show off意为“展示/炫耀”,常作贬义,炫耀某人的能力、 财富、 智慧(one's abilities, wealth, intelligence)等,如:
Do stop showing off---it's embarrassing. 快别卖弄了--太难为情了。
The child danced around the room, showing off to everybody. 那个孩子满屋子跳舞, 向大家显派一番。
show-off 作名词,意为“爱炫耀的人”,如:
Take no notice of him you know what a show-off he is. 别理睬他--你知道他多喜欢卖弄。
Part IV (Project)
1. put into practice
「解析」 put into practice意为“将…付诸实施”,如: put a plan into practice 实行某计划
practice 常用于以下短语中:
The idea would never work in practice. 那种设想永远也实现不了。
It's important to keep in practice. 经常练习很重要。
If you don't play, you'll get out of practice. 不练习就会荒疏。
谚语:Practice makes perfect 熟能生巧。
2. contribute to
「解析」contribute to意为“促成某事物”,如:
Does smoking contribute to lung cancer 吸烟会导致肺癌吗
contribute to意为“出(钱、力、主意等),捐助、捐赠、贡献”,如:
Every year he contributes ten pounds to a charity collection. 他每年捐献十英镑给慈善事业。
contribute to意为“增加某事物,添加到某事物中”,如:
Her work has contributed enormously to our understanding of this difficult subject. 她的著作极有助于我们对这个困难问题的了解。
3. push for
「解析」push for意为“努力争取”,如:
Many young people are pushing for a chance to work in an IT company after they graduate from university. 大学毕业后,许多年轻人都努力争取在IT公司工作。
be pushed for sth 缺少某事物; 某事物不足,如:
be pushed for money, time, etc 缺少金钱、 时间等
