No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the USA. There are at most 2,000 of them, as compared with 180 in Japan, 164 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Famous dailies like the Washongton Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However they are not national newspapers in the sence that The Times is in Britain or Lemonde is in France, since each American city has it own daily newspapaer. The best of these present detailed description of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.
Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the “sensational (=very interesting and exciting)” which feature crime and gossip (闲谈), to the “serious” , which focous on factual news and analysis of world events, but with few expectations. American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with the attraction of television.
Just as American newspapers satisfy all tastes, so do they also try to attract readers of all political parties. A few newspapers support extremist groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers try to attract middle-of-the-road Americans who are moderate (中立的). Many of these papers print columns by well-known journalists of different political and social views, in order to present a balanced picture. As in other countries, American newspapers can be either responsible or inresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press surves its country well and that it has more than once courageously exposed political scandals (丑闻) or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affairs. The newspapers drew the attraction of the public to the horrors of the Vietnam War.
56. There are fewer national newspapers in ______.
A. Britain than in the USA B. France than in Britain
C. the USA than in Britain or France D.France than in the USA or Britain
57. Most American newspapers try hard to entertain their readers because______.
A. they have to keep up a good relation with them
B. they have to compete with television
C. they have to write about crime and gossip
D. they have to give factual news in interesting ways
58. Many American newspapers attract readers of different political preference by______.
A. supportng extremist groups from time to time
B. inviting middle-of-the-road Americans to write articles for them
C. avoiding carrying articles about extremists
D. printing articles representing different political views
59. The passage is mainly about______.
A. the characteristics of American newspapers
B. the development of American newspapers
C. the functions of American newspappers
D. the advantages and disadvantages of American newspapers

Among various programs, TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springernn and Oprah Winfrey shows.
Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of “ rubbish talk”. The contents on his show are as surprising as can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love , sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to believe the troubles of other people’s lives could really happen.
Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes the TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.
Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a “final word”. He makes a small speech about the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.
Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show’s main audience are middle-class Americans. Most of these people have the time, money and ability to deal with life’s tough problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18 to 21-year-olds whose main troubles in life include love, ralationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show’s influence.
60. Compared with other TV shows, both the Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey shows are______.
A. more detailed B. more formal
C. more interesting D. unusually popular
61. Through the social problems Jerry Springer talk about appear unpleasant, people who watch the shows_______.
A. remain cold to them B. are ready to face up to them
C. remain interested in them D. are willing to get away from them
62. Which of the following is more likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?
A. A NBA match B. Wars in Iraq
C. A new type of robot D. Family income planning
63. We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows_______.
A. attract different people B. appear at different times of the day
C. have become the only one of its kind D. explore the weakness in human nature
C

第二节 简答题 阅读一篇短文,根据各小题的具体要求,简要回答问题,本节共三个小题,每小题2分,满分6分。
SHISHMAREF, an Eskimo village on an island off northwestern Alaska , is falling into the ocean. Giant storm waves have so hit the place—once well buffered by sea ice—that villagers voted in 2002 to leave their ancestral home for the mainland. They are being called one of the first refugees(难民)of global warming.
“We tend(易于)to describe climate change in terms that are abstract(抽象的)—a one degree rise in temperature, an increase in greenhouse gases—but when waves wash away a village, that’s concrete and very emotional,” says Igor Krupnik, an expert at the National Museum of Natural History. “When they lose a piece of their land, they aren’t just losing a certain number of square miles. They are losing part of their history and their memory. They are losing childhood events and grandparents’ tales.”
Before temperatures began to rise in Shishmaref about 30 years ago, 20 to 30 miles of hard sea ice protected the village from powerful fall storms. But the natives say the ice doesn’t freeze as solidly or as soon as it used to and now stretches only six or seven miles, leaving the community of 600 people more exposed. Storms have swept houses into the ocean.
The villagers’ plan is to move to Tin Creek, a site on the Alaska mainland 12 miles away, and they have received $180 million from the government. Residents hope that in their new community they’ll be able to maintain(维持)their close ties, continue hunting animals, and keep fishing, much as their ancestors have done for centuries. “People are asking why the government should be spending so much money on so few people,” said a government official. “But people in Alaska are like everyone else. We want to help keep their culture alive.”
  73. Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “buffered”.
  74. According to the villagers’ saying, what do we know about the sea ice around Shishmaref in the past? (回答词数不超过8个)
  75. What is the villagers’ main purpose to rebuild their community? (回答词数不超过6个)

American hoildays usually celebrate a patriotic(爱国的), political, or religious event of the past.
Among the patriotic holidays are Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Columbus Day, and Thanksgiving Day. Political holidays include Washington’s Birthday, Lincoln’s birthday, and Independence Day. Many Americans think of two religioud holidays---Easter and Christmas---as the most important celebrations of the year.
A study of patriotic holidays in the United States suggests some American values. Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday of September, honors the hard-working people of the country. Veterans’ Day is celebrated on November 11 in memory of all men who have ever fought in defense of the country. On the second Monday of October, Americans recall Christopher Columbus. The Thanksgiving holiday recalls America's earliest history. It is celebrated on the last Thursday of November for the first big harvest the colonists received on the new land.
Another type of American holiday, the political celebration, honors importtant figures or events in American history. Two highly respected presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, are honored by a single holiday. Ated on Presidents’ Day, the third Monday of February. Independence Day, popularly called the Fourth of July, recalls the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
Unlike America’s political holidays, two popular religious holidays are marked by busy preparations and long celebration. Most schools and colleges are closed for a week’s vacation in the spring at Easter, the holiday, honoring the resurrection(复活)of Christ. Of all American holidays, Easter is the only one that is not held at a fixed tim every year; It takes place sometime between March 22 and April 25. Christmas is a religious holiday which celebrates the birth of Christ; it occurs on December 25. Most schools close for the last two weeks of December.
