Elective courses vary from school to school, and might include classes such as art, drama, music and an expanded choice of foreign languages, technical and business subjects. 2.How many terms are there in Australian high school? And what about their holidays? The school year in Australian is divided into four terms and runs from late January/early February until December. There is a short holiday between terms and a long summer holiday in December and January. She also told me that the students in Australia attend school from Monday to Friday each week. School hours vary slightly across Australia but are generally from 9.00 am to 3.30 pm each school day. However, in China, the school year is divided into two terms. The first term begins in September and often ends in January. The second term often begins in March and ends in July. Generally speaking, the winter holidays last one month and the summer holidays last two months. 3.What differences are there between state schools and private schools in Australia? Most Australian parents tend to send their children to private schools instead of state schools, though the state schools are free of charge. The main reason is that students in the private schools are more disciplined and competitive. Therefore, there are more chances for them to go to universities or TAFE (Technical And Further Education). Still some parents send their children to state schools, especially some poor families. The students there are mostly from poor families. Some parents don’t pay much attention to the children’s education. Some students even don’t have their own textbooks. Besides, the school is lacking teachers, because some teachers can’t stand the rough conditions there and have left there. 4.What school activities or school work do you often do after class? Luckily, during the third week, we went to Hervey Bay High School. There, I dealt with this question. A student, Lisa, told me that there were a lot of outdoor activities such as water sports, golf, cycling, horse riding, tennis, football, cricket, and basketball. For them the climate was perfect for these activities. 5.In what ways are students disciplined in your school if they don’t do their work or break the school rules? If a student displays unsafe behaviour, they are immediately taken RTC. RTC means the Responsible Thinking Classroom. It is a place where students learn to develop specific and achievable goals. This room is staffed by teachers who help students plan strategies to minimise their disruption of others or act in a safe way. Students who disrupt the planning process once in the RTC are asked the questions. If a student disrupts twice in the RTC, they have chosen to go home. Students who disrupt in the RTC a second time have chosen to leave. In this situation, parents/caregivers are notified that the student needs to leave the school environment. Students are welcome to return to school once they have completed a plan and demonstrated they are ready to follow the rules.
