Have you ever dreamed of going on a trip to space with your friends? Sitting comfortably in a spaceship, you enjoy the sight of the stars shining outside. Looking down, you see a blue planet, the Earth, glittering (闪烁) like a diamond.
Twenty Senior 1 students from Beijing No. 56 High School were lucky enough to share such an experience. They were among the first to visit the new Beijing Planetarium (天文馆) since it opened to the public on December 12, 2004.
Construction(建设) work began in 2001 and cost 300 million yuan. The new five-floor building is 30 metres high and has 20 thousand square metres of floor space. It has many world-class facilities including a digital space theatre and a space capsule simulator (仿真太空舱). There is also a Jurassic Period (侏罗纪) exhibition.
In the planetarium’s space theatre, advanced digital facilities and a three-dimensional (三维的) projector give visitors a picture of the universe. They will also be able to see the moon, a comet, stars and distant galaxies (星系) through a telescope.
“When we are in space, we can’t see as wide an angle (角度) as you can sitting here in the theatre,” said China’s first astronaut Yang Liwei, who was impressed by what he saw.
In addition to the space trip, the students took a journey back to prehistoric (史前的) times in a 15-minute feature film named “Life Origins” (《生命的起源》). The film was shown in the planetarium’s 3D theatre, the largest in the world. “The theatre can mimic (模仿) smoke, wind and even smell!” said Gao Yuan, a 15-year-old boy from No. 56 High School. “When it rains, you can feel little drops of water; when a vast sea appeares on the screen, your seat slowly goes down and you feel as if you were in the ocean. It is a thrilling (刺激的) experience.”
