Unit4 Earthquakes
--- Wu Ying No. 5 Middle School
Introduction:
This is the first period of this unit. It includes Warming-up, New words, Pre-reading and Reading. In this period, students should get the first impression of natural disasters, especially earthquakes. Because students have learnt a little about earthquakes in their geography lessons, I will let they talk about them, including the phenomena before an earthquake and what people should when it happens. This period will get students to learn about the “Brave City of China”, that is Tangshan.
Teaching goals:
Get a general idea of earthquakes and some other natural disasters;
Train the students’ reading and speaking ability’
Train the students’ ability to cooperate with others.
Teaching important points and difficult points:
Train the students’ reading ability—skimming and scanning.
Train the students’ ability to cooperate with others.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Lead-in
Task 1:Talking about natural disasters
Q:What kind of natural disasters do you know (show the Ss some pictures of natural disasters.)
Flood, drought, typhoon, hurricane, sandstorm, volcano, earthquake.
Task 2: Talking about earthquake.
Q: Do you know when and where the greatest earthquake of the 20thcentury happened
Tanshan, Hebei July 28th, 1976
Q: How much do you know about an earthquake
---Before the earthquake: a prosperous city
---After the earthquale: in ruins
People were injured or lost their lives
Rescue workers dig out the injured and the dead. Survivors buried the dead, and felt very sad.
Step 2. Pre-reading
Task 3: Predictions of an earthquake
Q: Do you know what would happen before an earthquake (with the picture on page 25 )
1. bright light flash in the sky;
2. annimals are too nervous, such as cows, pigs, horses, and snakes, etc;
3. the water in the well rises and falls
4. the well walls have deep cracks with smelly gas;
5. mice run out to look for places to hide.

Task 4: Getting the general idea of the whole text.

Place: Tangshan, Hebei Province
What disaster: A big earthquake
Before the disaster: Many strange things happened
Damage: The city lay in ruins
More than 400000 people were killed or injured
Rescue: 150000 soldiers were sent to help.
Most of the 10000 miners were rescued.

Task6: Filling the blanks and retelling the text
At 3:42 a.m. on July 28, 1976, the greatest earthquake of the 20th century happened in Tangshan, Hebei Province, China. In fifteen terrible seconds, a large city lay in ruins. The number of people who were killed or injured reached more than 400,000. Nearly everything was destroyed , including, hospitals factories, building, railway dams tracks, etc.
Water, food and electricity_were hard to get. People wondered how long the disaster would last. Not all hope was lost.The army sent 150.000 soldiers to Tangshan to help the rescue workers. Slowly the city began to breathe again.
Step 7. Discussion
Task7: What should we do if an earthquake happens,especially when we have a class
Tips:
1. Don’t be nervous and keep calm.
2.Don’t try to run out of the classroom.
3.Protect your head by putting your bag on your head.
4.Sit down under your desk.
5.Leave the classroom after the earthquake.
Task 8: If you are the survivors of Tangshan earthquake, will you want to leave the sad place or rebuild the city Why
No matter how great the difficulty is, if we don’t give up, work hard and help each other, we can overcome it. The people in Tangshan have shown that we human beings can make something impossible possible and can create wonders.
