Game: Look at the paintings and guess who they are.1) He is a painter of Holland. He lived in the nineteenth century. He is famous for his idea of emotional expression in painting. His great works include Bedroom at Arles, The Starry Night and Crows in the Wheatfields – Vincent van Gogh2) He is a Chinese painter. He lived a very long life, crossing two centuries, from 1864 to 1957. He is not only good at painting, but also good at making poems and sculpture. – Qi baishi3) He is an Italian painter. He lived during the 15th and 16th century. He is well known for his works like the last supper and Mona Lisa. Besides, he is also a sculptor, architect – Leonardo da Vinci4) He is a Spanish painter. He is widely known as the most important artist of the 20th century. But many people say it is not easy to understand his paintings. – Pablo Picasso2. Ask some students to report what they know about the painters.Do you know which country each of them is from What do you know about them 1) Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), was a man in a hurry, an artist of tremendous (超凡的)energy and prodigious output (多产的) . He killed himself when he was only 37, but he left behind him more than 2,000 paintings and drawings, which established(创立) his reputation(名声) in a way he would never have considered possible.His early works show his desire to express the hard and poor life of people, such as Potato Eaters and Dark. Later he was influenced by the work of the impressionists(印象派画家) and by the work of some Japanese printmakers. He began to experiment with current techniques(流行的技巧) and use the bright colors. His other works include Bedroom at Arles, Starry Night, Crows in the Wheat fields, etc. "As for me, I am rather often uneasy in my mind, because I think that my life has not been calm enough; all those bitter disappointments, adversities, changes keep me from developing fully and naturally in my artistic career." Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853-1890), Dutch postimpressionist painter, whose work shows expressionism, the idea of emotional expression in painting.2) Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) Over five hundred years ago, a man designed(设计) a flying machine. He also invented a helicopter ( 直升飞机). This clever man was an Italian. He was called Leonardo da Vinci. (1452-1519) He had a keen eye and quick mind that led him to make (make) important scientific discoveries, yet he never published his ideas. He was one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance (复兴). His most famous works are The Last Supper and Mona Lisa.“He was like a man who awoke too early in the darkness, while the others were all still asleep" 3) Pablo Picasso (1881~1973)Pablo Picasso,1881~1973is the best known and most influential painter of this century. It was he who developed the style of painting known as Cubism, which led to a dramatic revolution in art. His life of paining can be devided into different periods, such as Blue Period (1901—1903), Rose Period (1904—1905 ), Classical Period (1905 ), Iberian (伊比利亚) Period (1906) , African Period (1907 ) , Cubism (立体派)(1908—1917 ),etc. His greatest works include The Old Guitarist (1903 ),Two acrobats (杂技演员)and a Dog (1905 ), Two Youths (1905), Self-Portrait (1906) ,House on the Hill, Horta de Ebro (1909),and Still Life with Chair Caning (1912).4) Qi Baishi (1864—1957) Qi Baishi (1864—1957),of Hunan Province, traveled around the country on his earlier years, selling paintings and carving (雕刻)seals(印章) to make a living. He settled down in Beijing at the age of 57, and gradually his style of painting began to bining (combine) traditional freehand brushwork and folk art, he produced a unique (独特的) art form centering (center) on flowers, birds, insects, and fish. Simple and bold, each colorful painting was achieved with only a few strokes. In his later years he focused(集中) on calligraphy(书法) and seal carving and served in the early 1950s as chairman of the Chinese Artists Association.4. Discussion:Ask the students to express their feeling about the four pictures.The students discuss with a partner what kind of paintings they like.Traditional Chinese Painting, Cartoon, Oil painting, Water color painting, Ink and color painting, Flower – bird works, Classic painting, Wash paintingIf you were asked to choose or paint a painting that shows who you are inside.
