Unit 12 Art and literature
Period one Warming up and listening
Step 1 Lead-in
Brainstorm the Ss about paintings including the names of some famous paintings and some famous artists.( Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Zheng Banqiao’s bamboo, Xu Beihong’s horses, Zhang Daqian, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso’s Abstract paintings, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Last Supper, Qi Baishi’s Shrimps)
Step 2 Presentation (a quiz)
T: Since you have known so many famous about paintings and famous painters, now I will narrate some resume of painters and you’ll guess who they are.
1) He is a painter of Holland. He lived in the 19th century. He is famous for his emotional expression in painting. His great works include Bedroom at Arles, Starry Night and Crows in the wheatfields.(Vincent van Gogh)
2) He is an Italian painter. He lived during the 15th&16th century. He is well-known for his works like the Last Supper, and Mona Lisa. Besides, he is also a sculptor, architect, engineer and scientist. (Leonado da Vinci)
3) He is a Spanish painter. He is widely known as the most important artist of the 20th century. He is famous for his Abstract paintings, but many people say it is not easy to understand his paintings. (Pablo Picasso)
4) He is a Chinese painter. He is from He Nan Province. He lived a very long life, crossing two centuries, from 1864 to 1951. He is good at drawing flowers and creatures. He is not only good at painting but good at making poems and sculpture. (Qi Baishi)
T: Now please turn to Page 78, look at the paintings. Since you have known some of the painter’s characteristics, then can you match the paintings in your books with the correct painters.

Step 3 Discussion
Ask the Ss to talk about the pictures and tell what kind of paintings they like and why.
If possible, ask one or two students to draw a picture on the Bb.
Tell the Ss: Besides paintings, there are also many other kinds of art in the world. And they are greatly appreciated by people from all over the world. Art can reflect who we are inside and that’s where the beauty of art lies.
Step 4 Listening
T: Now you’re given some chances to enjoy some forms of art in theatres. Before going there, you will have to find out the specific information of them. E.g. What’s it When and where can you enjoy it How much do you have to pay Listen to the tape and fill in the blanks in your books.
Play the tape for the Ss first to get a general idea and then the answers.

Today we just get to know a little bit of art. There is much in art for us to learn and appreciate. After class I hope you can grasp every chance to enjoy the beauty of art.
Homework:
Preview the text Harry Potter, and make a film poster for the film “Harry Potter” which is going to be shown in your school. In the poster you should write down the following information:
What is the name of the film
What is the film about
What stars are in the film
Where will the film be shown
When will the film start
How much are the tickets
Why should people watch the film
Period Two Reading Harry Potter
Step 1 Lead-in and presentation
Ask the Ss: Do you know any hero in films or novels who have strange power (Sun Wukong, Ne Zha, Huang Feihong etc.) Who is the most famous American magician (David Copper Field) Have you ever tried any magic trick –It’s hard to make it true to life.
Today we are going to read somebody who has got some strange power which we call wizard. Who is it Since you have known a lot about Harry Potter, please tell me what they have known about Harry Potter. (a miserable childhood, strange powers, magic, trick, scar, forehead, witchcraft, wizardry, wizard)
Step 2 Reading
Now we know Harry Potter is not real in the world, but created by JK Rowling. And she writes a series of books about Harry Potter .
1. Read the passage quickly and get a general idea of each paragraph.
Para1 The world of JK Rowling is full of magic and wonders.
Para2 Harry seems like a normal boy, but his life is miserable.
Para3 Hogwarts is an unusual school.
Para4 Harry has to fight against bad wizards and do the right thing.

Step 3 Post reading
Ask the Ss to think about and discuss the questions:
1. Why does Rowling use strange creatures in her books
-- to arouse readers’ curiosity and attract the readers. esp. those who are of great imagination, and also add to magic effect.
2. Do you think we can learn about the real world by reading novels
Yes. Because novels are based on real life and reflect our society.
3. What does the writer write this passage to tell us
We must believe in ourselves and help others if we want to be happy and live a good life.
Step 4 Consolidate
Ask the Ss to say sth. about JK Rowling, Harry Potter and Hogwarts according to the passage, using Attributive clauses
