Part Ⅰ. Analysis of the teaching material
(Ⅰ) Status and function
1. The reading part is the basis of grammar and language in use
2. The topic is about history,which can expand the students’ knowledge and improve their cultural awareness.
3. The structure of text is very clear ,which is helpful to imporve the students’reading skills.
4. On the other hand,most of the students are not familiar with the city of Pompeii.
(Ⅱ) Teaching aims and demands
Knowledge Goals
1. To help the Students to know the story about the city of Pompeii.
2. To let the Students master some useful words and expressions such as ocuur,witness,preserve and so on..
Ability Goals
1.To improve the Students’ability of induction through the reading
2.To improve the Students’speaking ability by retelling and introducing a place of interest for tourists.
3.To cultivate the students’spirit of cooperation and imagination
Emotion Goals
1.To let the students understand the foregin culture and arouse their cultural awareness through the ancient city.
2.To help the students learn to enjoy and protect cultural relics.
3.To build up the students’confidence of learning English
(Ⅲ) Teaching important points
1.How to predict the content of the text according to the title and the picture
2.How to grasp the main ideas of the article and each paragragh correctly and quickly
3.How to encourage the students’imagination and improve their ability of organization.
(Ⅳ) Teaching difficult poins
1.To comprehend the content of the text thoroughly and quickly
2.To introduce a place of interest in easy and simple English

Part Ⅱ.Methods of teaching and learning
(Ⅰ)Teaching methods
1.Task-based language teaching method --- arrange a variety of activities to let all of students join in
2.Discussion to help the Ss solve the questions by themselves--- according to their English level, divide the whole class into six groups to have a competition
3.Aural-oral Method with the help of the computer
(Ⅱ).Learning methods
1.To master effective reading skills to understand the text better and faster
2.To study independently,cooperatively and competitively
3.Try to taste the joy of sussess and become interested in English
Part Ⅲ. Teaching procedure
There are eight steps in my teaching procedures as follows:
Step 1. Organization and revision ( takes about 4 minutes)
After the greeting,I will ask:Can you tell me how many kinds of stories you know What are they .Then I will ask some groups to answer and check the answers using the computer to show a diagram about the kinds of stories.
The purpose of this step: To remind the students what they have learned and lay the foundation for the reading
Step 2. Presentaion ( takes about 5 minutes)
I will play a part of sound and ask the students to listen and guess what is happening according to the sound.Studens are encouraged to speak out their answers, and different answers are available.After that,I will show the picture of volcanic eruption and tell the students that one of the answers is volcanic eruption which result in the doom – the day that the city of Pompeii was buried,then show the title of the text and write down the title on the blackboard.
The purpose of this step: To present the title of the reading part, attract their attention and arouse the students’imagination
Step 3. Before reading (takes about 4 minutes)
I will ask the students if they know about the city of Pompeii and the Mount Vesuvius.If not, I will show two maps to introduce both of them.Then I will request the students to look at the picture of the city Pompeii and the title of the text and predict the content of the article in groups.Any volunteers can answer the question.
The purpose of this step: To train the students’abilility of observation and prediction according to the title and the pictue
Step 4. Fast reading (takes about 5 minutes)
1)I will ask the students to read the text quickly to grasp the main idea of the whole article and discuss in groups if their prediction is in harmony with it or not.Any groups can share their opinions among the class voluntarily.
2)I will use the computer to show the main ideas of the six paragraghes,ask students to read each paragragh quickly again and match the paragragh with its main idea correctly.
The purpose of this step: To train the students’ability of induction and communication in groups.
Step 5. Detailed reading(takes about 8 minutes)
I will show the following five questions about the details of the text on the screen and ask the students to read the text carefully to answer the questions.
1. When did the eruption of Vesuvius happen and what was the result
2. When did scientists find the lost towns and start to dig out it
3. What had Pompeii been like before the eruption
4. What can you see if you walk in the streets of Pompeii today
5. Why does author say that the city lives on nearly 2,000 years after its loss
I will request the students discuss the questions and any groups can answer these questions freely.After that I will check the answers and write the key words of the each answer on the blackboard.
The purpose of this step: To train the students’ability of finding the details precisely and quickly.
Step 6. Consolidation(takes about 7 minutes)
I will ask the students to retell the stories of the city Pompeii with the help of the answers to questions in Step 5 in groups.These answers make up the main idea of the story.Then when ready,each group will choose one representative to retell.
The purpose of this step: To consolidate the students’kowledge and train the students’ability of organization and expression.
Step 7. Role--play (takes about 9 minutes)
I will choose one group to act as tourists to visit the city of Pompeii and the other five groups act as the guides of the city.They discuss in groups and send a representative to introduce the city of Pompeii to the tourists in easy and simple English basing on the text.It is the tourists who decide whose introductions are the most attractive.
The purpose of this step: To develop the students’ability to express in English and their reaction and train the their creativity and imagination
Step 8.Summary and homework(takes about 3 minutes)
I will make a summary on the lesson and announce which group is the the final winner. The homework is as follows:In China,there are many places which can be also called time capsules,which preserve a frozen moment history.Can you give some examples At the same time.In 2008 Olympic Games, many foreigners will come to visit our country, please choose one of the places and write an introduction for the foreign visitors.
The purpose of this step: To train the students’ability of application and deduction and encourage the students to learn and protect our cultural relics.
