Good afternoon everyone,
I feel that it is a responsibility to be here and give this speech. I have found that fewer and fewer of our classmates have been doing sports ever since the beginning of this term. Maybe each of them has a different reason. But I believe that doing exercise is more important, for the following reasons.
Firstly, the busier we are with our study, the more necessary it is for us to take physical exercise. Playing sports can give our brains a chance to get relaxed, which will allow us to study more efficiently. Secondly, doing sports every day, such as playing ping-pong or basketball, can greatly reduce the possibility of getting ill. That means we will have more time for study. What’s more, everybody wants to have an admirable figure together with a nice face, right? We can achieve this only if we spend a certain amount of time every day sweating on the playground.
As graduation is drawing near, it will not be long before we say good-bye to each other, so let’s spare some time to play together.
Don’t hesitate, take action and let’s meet on the playground.Be there or be square!

The German port of Hamburg has been offered $ 10,500 to change its name to "Veggieburg" by animal rights activists who are unhappy about the city's association with hamburgers. "Hamburg could improve animal welfare and bring kindness to animals by changing its name to Veggieburg," the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wrote in a letter sent to Hamburg Mayor Ole yon Beust. The German branch of PETA, which has 750,000 members worldwide, said the organization would give Hamburg' s childcare facilities 10,000 euros worth of vegetarian burgers if the city changed its name. But city officials in Hamburg, Germany's second largest city which traces its roots to the ninth century, were unmoved. "I cannot afford to waste my time with this. I don't even want to look at nonsense like this," said Klaus May, a city government spokesman. "But that doesn't mean we Hamburgers don' t have a sense of humor." In its letter, PETA said the name Hamburg reminded people of "unhealthy beef patties(肉饼) made of dead cattle". "Millions of people fall ill each year with deadly illnesses like heart disease, cancer, strokes and diabetes from eating hamburgers," PETA said in the letter.
The original "hamburger steak", a dish made of ground beef, traveled west with Germans to the United States in the 19th century. The first mention of "hamburgers" appeared on a menu in a New York restaurant in 1834. Some historians trace its beginning to a beef sandwich once popular with sailors in Hamburg. The city' s name "Hamburg" comes from the old Saxon words "ham" (bay) and "burg" (castle). PETA recently made a similar offer to the U.S. town of Hamburg, New York. But their $15,000 bid was refused.
41. Why did PETA suggest changing the name "Hamburg" ?
A. Because the name reminded people of a food made of animal meat.
B. Because changing the name can prevent people from eating hamburgers.
C. Because it can bring children much food to change the name.
D. Because hamburgers cause so many diseases every year.
42. What does the new name" Veggieburg" suggest?
A. Stopping eating meat. B. Eating vegetables instead of meat.
C. It's better for children to eat vegetables. D. Treating animals better.
43. Which of the following statements of the German name "Hamburg" is true?
A. The name came from a kind of food.
B. The name came from the old German language.
C. The name has a long history.
D. The name has something to do with sailors.
44. What do you think is the result of the suggestion raised by PETA?
A. The two cities will have new names.
B. The present names of the two cities will last.
C. The children in Hamburg will have nothing to eat.
D. People won't eat hamburgers in the future.
B
Every reader of this passage must spend the whole of his waking life looking at things. Looking, like breathing, is natural; we do it without noticing it. Looking is passive—but seeing is active. Once you start seeing things you really begin to wake up. People who see things which others have only looked at, and draw conclusions from what they see, can add to man’s knowledge and help progress.
Someone recently discovered a place where metal had been worked continuously longer than any where else in England. He “saw” a wall in the Forest of Dean. Thousands of people must have looked at it without really seeing it, but this man noticed that among the usual stones of that place were bits and pieces of a different color; they also felt different to the hand. A closer sight showed that these pieces had been left behind in the fires of ancient people who had melted rocks to get metals. Looking around, he found more and more information, until the history of what men had done at that place over tens of centuries was known.
45. In the first sentence of this passage, “his waking life” means _______.
A. the time when he is waking up B. all the time he is awake
C. all the time he is alive D. all the time he is breathing
46. For the writer “seeing” means ______.
noticing things which need explaining B. doing something natural

47. The man found a place where ______.

B. men built walls of metal
C. men had melted metals tens of centuries before
D. men first learned to make fire with stones
48. The man found out that _______.
metal was melted in the Forest of Dean longer than at any other place in England
metal was used in England before any other part of the world
in England men made things of metal before they learnt how to make them of stone
people in the Forest of Dean have always worked harder than people in any other part of England

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is "No". It is not a tool a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further: he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his question into a large set of ideas about how the world works.
The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any change the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the change in the conditions.
This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigation. Einstein’s ideas are shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.
53. "... knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. "The author says this to show_________.
A. the importance of information
B. the difference between carpenters and ordinary people
C. the difference between scientists and ordinary, people
D. the importance of thinking
54. A sound scientific theory should be one that__________.
A. works under one set of conditions at any time
B. leaves no room for improvement
C. does not allow any change even under different conditions
D. can be used for many purposes
55. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. What works under one set of conditions at one time might work under the same conditions at other times.
B. Tools which a scientist uses for measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.
C. A scientist should know more about other branches of knowledge to arrive in his achievement.
D. Knowing how to investigate, how to discover information is important to scientists.
56. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Scientists are different from the ordinary people.
B. The theory of relativity.
C. Exactness is the secret of science.
D. Exactness and way of using tools is the key to the making of a scientist.

The bicycle is the common sight in our daily life, as a great many Chinese use one every day. But you may not know its role in strengthening international relations, as it did in the case of US President George W. Bush’s visit to China last November.
President Bush arrived in Beijing on November 19, 2005 after he finished the APEC meeting in South Korea. He met with Chinese top leaders and achieved agreements on trade, Taiwan issue and more.
Although Bush’s trip was short as 40 hours, he managed to spare a moment to do some cycling. On November 20, he rode up and down a steep path at Laoshan Olympic Mountain Bike Course in Beijing’s suburbs.
Six young Chinese cyclists accompanied the president, who was dressed in a Chinese training uniform with the “Beijing 2008” logo. He did not go along the arranged route and chose a more zigzag(曲折的) hiking path.
“How do you say, ‘take it easy on the old man’?” Bush joked to his partners before setting out.
“Compared with my bike path on the Crawford ranch (农场) , this one is greater and really difficult,” said Bush when his 45-minute ride ended. He said he will come to Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games.
This is not Bush’s first cycle ride in Beijing. In 1975 at the age of 29, he visited the Chinese capital for the first time, when his father was head of the US liaison office (联络处) in Beijing, which Bush described as “fantastic”.
However, observers said Bush’s ride is much more than just his favorite pastime. It expressed friendliness with people in China, where the bicycle is an important part of life and culture.
According to the Washington Post, one of the major newspapers in the US, this was a specially arranged activity by the US government, for they want to send the Chinese a sign of friendship. “The president is by no means hostile (有敌意的) to China,” it said.
57. What is the first paragraph mainly about?

B. The bicycle is the common sight in our daily life
C. Bicycle can play a role in improving relationship between nations

58. How long has George W. Bush stayed in Beijing?
A. 48 hours B. 20 hours C. 40 hours D. 44 hours
59. President George W. Bush went cycling ______.
A. wearing a T-shirt with the “Beijing 2008” logo
B. up and down a smooth path on Laoshan Mountain
C. accompanied by six young Chinese policemen
D. along a more challenging way without arrangement
60. Bush said “take it easy on the old man” to his partners probably because ______.
A. he wanted to make them easy
B. he wanted to make a joke about them
C. he wanted to tell them it would be a more zigzag hiking path
D. he wanted to show them it would not be an easy task for an old man
