What is Given in Giftedness?Words before reading This is a special unit that requires students to think deeply about what is being discussed. The first text, “What is given in giftedness,” invites deep reading, thinking and reflection. Although there is not much new vocabulary in the reading, the ideas expressed through those simple words are profound. Perhaps everybody hopes to be “gifted” in one way or another. But what does being gifted mean? Be encouraged to talk about what you understand being gifted to be, and what new insights you have gained after studying the unit. I remember a little girl once telling me about her cat. She said she was sure her cat was a real cat, meaning that her cat had fully realized its cat-ness. Why? “Because I take care of it so well,” she said. Obviously the cat enjoyed being a cat in her house, although I’m sure it was unaware of how much effort on the part of others went into making it possible for it to be itself. …I’m sure my cat didn’t know how much effort other cats have to make to make themselves be their cat-ness(find themselves).Read the whole passage as quickly as possible and tell: True, False, or INP 1.
