III. Reading comprehension:
(A)
There is no doubt about it. The best way to learn new words is to do it unconsciously. I don’t mean while you are unconscious. I mean while you are unconscious of the fact that it is sinking in(被完全理解).
That is how I learnt the 30,000 words in my mother tongue by living in an English-speaking world. I just picked them up. But some of them may be misunderstood. Now, to misunderstand does not mean not to understand. To misunderstand is to understand—but incorrectly.
The 5% mislearnt of all the words we “know” will be the least often used words, as the more often used words are less likely to be mislearnt. Some of these misunderstandings may live with all our lives, without ever knowing that we got them wrong.
Many English teachers think that this natural method of learning words in one’s own mother tongue can be used for second language learning. They teach their students how to play the Guessing Game. “There’s no time to look up in your dictionaries all the new words you come across,” they will say. “You have to practise guessing what the word means from the context(上下文).”
This method of guessing in second language learning does not work. It may succeed in many cases, but results in hundreds or thousands of wrongly-guessed meanings of words.
And what’s more, there are more separate meanings than there are words themselves. Our learners’ dictionaries usually have many meanings or usages for each word. So dictionary use should be part of every language learning. A good dictionary is what makes self-learning possible.
Don’t guess! Look it up!
51.The natural method of learning words is ______.
A. like the way the writer learns English
B. like the way everyone learns a second language
C. to use the words you have often got
D. to learn mostly by reading them
52.Which of the following is most likely NOT true
A. Some of the words the writer knows must have been misunderstood.
B. Most of the 30,000 words the writer learned are often used ones.
C. How many words the writer got wrong are not known.
D. All the words the writer knows were learned by reading them.
53.In the writer’s opinion, we should ______ when we come across new words in reading.
A. try to guess their meanings B. jump over these words
C. look them all up in the dictionary D. ask our teachers for their meanings

How to Fight Winter Blue
Winter’s short days are more than cold. For many people, winter depression, the most common type of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), is much a part of the season as hats and scarves.
Winter serious SAD sufferers may need medical treatment. Those feeling a little blue can help themselves by sticking to a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips.
Pace yourself. Don’t expect to do everything you normally can. Set a realistic schedule. Don’t listen to negative thinking, like blaming yourself or expecting to fail.
Get involved in activities that make you feel good or feel like you’ve achieved something. For example, play table tennis or badminton.
If you are feeling depressed, you may feel like staying away from friends. Yet this is a time when friends’ support can be helpful. Call them regularly. Remember, the more we put off calling or visiting a friend, the harder it is to rebuild a friendship.
Think clearly about what’s wrong or right. Instead of giving in to vague feelings of sadness, look at your problems objectively. Break down problems into specific issues that you can work on.
Regular exercise helps to prevent and ease depression.
Eat well. Studies show that a healthy diet can help to maintain a healthy body and mind. The vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients found in a balanced diet may help our bodies to produce feel-good hormones. Foods containing chemicals to help produce feel-good hormones include bananas, turkey, nuts and seeds. Eat at least five pieces of fruit and vegetables every day.

Is a Training Class or Family Teacher Necessary
More and more middle school students are going to all kinds of training classes or having family teachers at the weekend. There are two different viewpoints about it.
Some thinks it necessary. Firstly, it’s more effective to study with a teacher than by themselves. Secondly, it can strengthen what is learnt in class. Besides, they can learn a lot more. Others think it unnecessary. For one thing, students can easily form the habit of dependence. For another, students need time to relax from time to time. What’s more, the purpose of many training classes and teachers is to make money.
In my opinion, whether a training class or family teacher is needed just depends. If you are really very weak at or interested in a certain subject, maybe it’s OK for you. But be sure to choose a good and suitable class or teacher, otherwise it would be a waste of time and money
