Every year students flock to the college bookstore to purchase the different textbooks that they need for their classes. Little do these students realize that, in doing so, they are throwing good money away. It may sound unbelievable but textbooks, in some cases, actually cost as much as, if not more, than college fees.
Many people think that college bookstore are the most convenient source for textbooks. Titles are usually in-stock and students may purchase new textbooks or choose to buy second-hand books and save money . But the money saved by purchasing second-hand textbooks from college bookstores is small compared to the amount they could save by shopping online.
More and more online booksellers have begun selling textbooks at heavily discounted prices. Online second-hand bookstores are another source for college books as they stock a large number of textbooks, which means sizable savings for students. Students should avoid purchasing their textbooks at the first store that they browse online since there are so many ‘virtual’ booksellers on the Net. Price isn't the only factor to consider when making an online purchase. Students should also consider shipping costs and delivery time when making their decision.
Online auctions(拍卖) are another option for students seeking a bargain. This option, however, has its pros and cons. A plus is that students can get incredibly cheap books. One problem is that while online bookstores have a system in place that ensure you receive your order within a reasonable amount of time, with an auction purchase, however, you must depend on the auction seller's timetable.
One way that students can really save is by getting books for free. Project Gutenberg is one resource that English majors will find invaluable. Here students can legally download a huge collection of classic novels. In the past students needing help with their studies would often have to spend a lot of money buying expensive study guides. Today that is no longer the case. Cash-strapped students can now visit the website SparkNotes for free downloadable study guides as well as classics.

Martyn Harris looks back on his experience of being trained to appear on TV.
I am terrible on TV. I don’t sit straight and I don’t talk clearly. It bothers, because I know inside I am smart, sensitive and sincere. Television can make any fool look like an intellectual, but I come over as dishonest. After a disastrous TV show last year, when I called the interviewer by the wrong name, I was reluctant to ever do broadcasting again.
Until now, that is. I have my first novel out next month, which is called Do It Again, and the advertising people tell me I must go on TV to promote it. Which is how I find myself practising my television interviewing technique with two consultants from Public Image Ltd.
‘He blinks(眨眼) a lot, doesn’t he ’ says Diana, the speech specialist, studying my image on a video monitor. ‘And his crossed legs look defensive. But the voice isn’t bad.’ Jeannie, who is introduced to me as Public Image’s ‘image consultant’ takes a step backwards to study the general posture. ‘Needs to get his bottom back in the sofa. And the jacket makes him look a bit deformed. Where does he get his clothes from ’
‘Honesty is the most important thing,’ says Diana. ‘We don’t want to turn people into actors. We want to bring out their personality. Then most importantly, there are the three E’s: Energy, Enthusiasm and Enjoyment. And do try to stop blinking.’
And so our practice interview begins. ‘So, what can you tell us about your book, Martyn ’ ‘Umm …’ A long pause. ‘Errr … ‘ A longer pause. ‘Tee hee, hargh … ’ An foolish giggle. ‘All right,’ says Diana patiently, ‘we’ll try that again.’ We try it again, many, many times, each time trying to solve a different problem that I have. On the second run-through, my crossed legs keep moving up and down, which makes me look as if I want to run away (I do, I do). On the third run they are uncrossed, but my hands are clenched in my lap. On the fourth my hands are fiddling with my ears.
But Diana is patient and gives me a lot of advice. She is very good at her job because on the final run-through, after three hours or so, I really don’t look too bad. Steady gaze, breathing clear and no blinking. Not perfect but not bad.
I’m bursting with energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment and I’m talking a lot of nonsense, but you’d hardly notice. When you watch people on TV, you’ll see a lot more just like me.
46. The underlined word ‘reluctant’(paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to _________.
A. confusing B. unwilling C. grateful D. angry
47.The writer believes that he is terrible on TV because________.
A.he doesn’t make enough effort to perform well
B. he can’t help being rude to the interviewers
C. he seems to not be telling the truth
D. his personality differs from that of newsreaders and presenters
48. Why has the writer come to Public Image Ltd
A. Because he wants to find out what such companies do.
B. Because he want to improve his interviewing style.
C. Because he is interested in the work they do for politicians.
D. Because the company is good at promoting novels.
49. Diana and Jeannie both say that one of the writer’s problems when appearing on TV concerns _____________
A. the way he sits.
B. the clothes he wears.
C. the way his eyes move.
D. the way he moves.
50. What was the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To promote Public Image Ltd.
B. To describe an experience in his life.
C. To advertise his new book.
D. To give some advice to TV producers.
C
Mobile phones do not cause health problems for adults in the short term but there is a "slight suggestion" of a cancer risk for long-term users, according to the results of a study which could not rule out risks of brain or ear cancer for those who have used mobiles for more than 10 years.
"We found no association between illness and phone use for people who have used their phones for less than 10 years," said Lawrie Challis, chair of the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) programme. "But for those that have used mobile phones for over 10 years, the numbers appeared to show there may be some slight danger ... it's a faint suggestion that needs to be followed up."
The researchers involved in the six-year-long project, a joint project funded by government and the mobile phone industry, said they would further study it in the next stage of their work, which would also examine the effects of mobile phones on children's health.
The group's report, published yesterday, combines the work of 28 studies it organised, as well as other research from around the world that has looked at the effects of mobile phones on health factors such as high blood pressure, brain function and cancer. It concludes that there is no evidence of short-term effects.
There is also no evidence, the researchers say, of phones causing the illness known as ‘electrical hypersensitivity’, which is said to up to 4% of people in the UK ,who describe a sense of tiredness when exposed to electrical signals.
For the long term, however, there is less certainty. Paul Elliott, a doctor at London University, said: "In some of the studies there were slightly more brain and ear cancers. But the amount is quite small and we’re not sure if the difference is important."
Regarding the effects of mobiles on children, Professor Challis said: "At this stage we have no evidence at all they hurt children. But we have seen in the past that children react differently and often more severely than adults do to certain environmental agents such as lead, tobacco smoke and sunlight. "
51. What is the basic conclusion of the research project
A. People using mobile phone for more than 10 years have a greater chance of getting cancer.
B. No association has been found between illness and mobile phone use.
C. People should be cautious when using mobile phones frequently.
D. Using mobile phones for less than 10 years does not increase your chances of getting ill.
52. The underlined word ‘it’ in the third paragraph refers to __________.
A. the link between illness and long term phone use
B. the six year mobile phone study
C. the effects of mobile phone use on children
D. the chances of dying from cancer
53. What can be reasonably inferred from the text
A. The study was not independent because it was paid for by the phone industry.
B. The link between illness and phone use has not been widely studied.
C. There are many health problems caused by using mobile phones.
D. There is still much about the effects of mobile phone use that is unknown.
54. Which of the following medical conditions are mentioned in the text
A. Phone hypersensitivity, tiredness and low blood pressure.
B. Headaches, lead poisoning and cancer.
C. Ear cancer, brain cancer and electrical hypersensitivity.
D. Brain cancer, high blood pressure and tobacco smoke.
55. Why are scientists not certain about the effects of mobile phone use on children, according to the text
A. No children were studied as part of this research project.
B. Children may react differently to environmental factors than adults do.
C. Children use mobile phone less frequently than adults.
D. Adults have been using mobile phones longer than children.

In addition to teaching here, I also teach at a smaller high school 17 miles down the freeway from where I live. I was only about a quarter of a mile away from the school so I grabbed my books, and started walking."
"As soon as I got there I called a repairman to meet me at my car after class. One of my colleagues asked me what had happened. 'This is my lucky day,' I replied, smiling."
" 'Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day ' She was puzzled. 'What do you mean '"
" I live 17 miles from here.' I replied. “My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn't. Instead, it broke down in the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance of here. I'm still able to teach my class, and I've been able to arrange for the repairman to meet me after class. If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn't have been arranged in a more convenient fashion."

基础写作
Recently we conducted a survey of 2000 junior and senior students in order to learn more about students’ reading habits. We found 37 percent of middle school students read fewer than 5 books per year. With regard to reading material, it was shown that junior students preferred cartoon magazines and joke books whereas senior students preferred popular novels, classic works and science fiction. As for why students read so little, some of the junior students said they had no interests in reading while some of the senior students complained that they had no time to read because they had too much homework to do.
The findings suggest we need to encourage students to do more reading and give students more time for reading after class.

Dear diary,
Today in class the teacher told us a story that really helped me deal with the pressures I often feel in my studies. The story described why it is important to be optimistic and maintain a positive attitude when facing difficulty. This way we can better cope with the problems we meet in life.
I think the teacher was right to have an optimistic attitude to his problem. This allowed him to stay positive and to perform his job well. If he didn’t do so, this one problem would have turned into many other problems.
The story reminded me of waiting in line with Li Hua at the amusement park last summer. There were so many people and I felt upset at wasting so much time. But Li Hua said we could use the time to chat, as we had not seen each other in ages. When I looked at the situation from this point of view, I realized waiting in line was an opportunity not a problem.
Now I’m determined to always be optimistic when I meet problems. Rather than think of study as a pressure, I should see it as an opportunity to learn more about the world.
