Napoleon Bonaparte died on May 5, 1821, on the island of St. Helena off the coast of Africa. He was 51 years old at the time. When doctors examined Napoleon's body, they said that the former emperor of France had died from cancer of the stomach. That was the cause of death recorded in the official report. However, other doctors disagreed. One doctor who was present during the examination of the body said that Napoleon died of hepatitis. Other historians and medical experts have suggested that Napoleon died of syphilis, tuberculosis, or perhaps malaria. Now, after careful research, a British chemist thinks that Napoleon might have been poisoned -- not by a person, but by his wallpaper.
Napoleon was sent to the island of St. Helena in 1815 after he lost the battle of Waterloo. He was a prisoner on the island. Although he had servants to attend to him, he had to live in one small building. St. Helena is a very wet island, so the walls of the building were always covered with mold. Napoleon became ill from spending too much time inside his house. Almost constantly he had a fever, chills, and felt sick to his stomach. He often felt pain in his shoulders and in his side. His skin turned yellow. He got frequent headaches, and he would become dizzy and vomit. None of the medicine that the doctors gave Napoleon seemed to help. They were not sure what was the matter. Finally, Napoleon was too weak to leave the house. One night, while he was sleeping, he went into a coma and died.
Many doctors who later reviewed the reports of Napoleon's illness found that the symptoms did not show a man who suffered from stomach cancer. It seemed obvious that Napoleon had died from some other cause. In 1961, a Swedish doctor examined some of Napoleon’s hair and found a high level of arsenic, a chemical poison. Was Napoleon murdered? It is doubtful. Arsenic was used in many types of medicine during Napoleon’s time, so he might have taken the arsenic as a cure for his illness. Then, in 1982, Dr. David Jones from England began to look into the mystery and suggested that Napoleon might have breathed in arsenic which was in the air of his house. In the 1700s and 1800s, arsenic was used to make a kind of green paint used on cloth and wallpaper. If the paint was used on a wet wall, the arsenic would go into the air. A person in the room might breathe that air. After studying the wallpaper in the room where Napoleon died, Dr. Jones found high levels of arsenic in the green paint on the walls.
41. The passage says that .
A. a British doctor thinks he has found the cause of Napoleon's death
B. many doctors have tried to guess the cause of Napoleon's death

A. He owned the island. B. He was a prisoner there.
C. His family lived there. D. He liked the island.
43. Napoleon suffered from the following symptoms except __________.
A. chills B. fever C dizziness D. bleeding
44. The official report said that Napoleon died of____________.
A. cancer B. a coma C. mold D. poison

A. He ate it. B. He breathed it in.
C. He touched it. D. He drank it.

SOS Air Ambulance Service Takes off in China
What should you do when you are injured in a remote place? Don't worry: the air ambulance will help you.
International SOS announced the launch of its first air ambulance operation in China.
A Chinese company, Deer Jet, provided a Hawker 800XP airplane fitted with advanced medical equipment to be used as a flying hospital.
Based in Beijing, the rescue flight could cover Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Mongolia and Singapore , allowing patients to early receive proper treatment.
Jim Williams, managing director of International SOS, explains why he believes this service is so important: "The number of foreign business people, students and travellers going to China is increasing and we are seeing more demand for our assistance services and for high-quality medical care. The quality of medical care is rapidly advancing in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and SOS air rescue service will make it possible for people to reach centres of medical excellence or medical destinations of their choice rapidly."
Tu Zhizheng, chairman of Deer Jet, says the project demonstrates the rapid development of Chinese society. "Through our cooperation, we are now able to provide both Chinese citizens and foreigners with professional air rescue services. A few years ago, this would have sounded like a fairytale."
Then how will SOS respond to an emergency? As soon as they receive a call at one of the China-based 24-hour Alarm Centres requesting urgent medical assistance, the SOS doctors will collect as much information as possible about the patient's medical condition. They will then advise the caller on the proper next steps and arrange for immediate transfer to the nearest hospital for treatment. The SOS doctors will continue to monitor the condition of the patient through discussing with the local treating doctors until the patient is considered stable enough to be moved. Ground and air ambulance arrangements will be made to transfer the patient together with aero-medically-trained doctors and nurses to the nearest centre of medical excellence.
This service will mean the difference between life and death for those suffering medical emergencies in remote areas. But one thing: if you are alone in the middle of nowhere and break your leg, make sure you don't break your cell phone at the same time!
46. The air ambulance based in Beijing could reach the following countries except_______.
A. Japan B. Argentina C. Mongolia D. South Korea
47. Which sentence best states the main idea of the fifth paragraph?
A. More and more people need high quality medical care.
B. The air rescue service has a large market in China.

48. Which of the following statements is NOT mentioned in the article?
A. The airplane is provided by the company Deer Jet.
B. The service is available 24 hours a day.
C. The air ambulance is stationed in Beijing.
D. The service will cost more than $3000 per hour for international rescues.
49. Each of the following sentences contains the word "monitor". Which one has the same meaning as the underlined monitor in the passage?
A. The Security Police had monitored all of his phone calls.
B. The details of today's experiment are displayed on the monitor.
C. Police officers have been closely monitoring the organization's activities.
D. Jim is very happy today, because he has been elected monitor of his class.
50. The following four steps explain how SOS responds to an emergency, but they are not in correct order. The right order is

③ Doctors keep monitoring the patient with the local treating doctor.

One reaction to all the concern about tropical deforestation(砍伐森林) is a blank stare that asks the question, "Since I don't live there, what does it have to do with me?"
The answer is that your way of life, wherever you live in the world, is tied to the tropics in many ways. If you live in a house, wash your hair, eat fruits and vegetables, drink soda, or drive a car, you can be certain that you are affected by the loss of tropical forests.
Biologically, we are losing the richest regions on earth when, each minute, a piece of tropical forest, the size of ten city blocks ,disappears. As many as five million species of plants, animals, and insects (40 to 50 percent of all living things) live there, and are being lost faster than they can be found and described. Their loss is immeasurable.
Take rubber for example. For many uses, only natural rubber from trees will do. Synthetics are not good enough. Today over half the world's commercial rubber is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia, while the Amazon's rubber industry produces much of the world's four million tons. And rubber is an important material in making gloves, balloons, footwear and many sporting goods. Thousands of other tropical plants are valuable for their industrial use.
Many scientists strongly believe that deforestation contributes to the greenhouse effect -- or heating of the earth from increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As we destroy forests, we lose their ability to change carbon dioxide into oxygen.
Carbon dioxide levels could double within the next half-century, warming the earth by as much as 4.5 degrees. The result? A partial melt-down of polar ice caps, raising sea levels as much as 24 feet; even 15 feet could threaten anyone living within 35 miles of the coast. Unbelievable? Maybe. But scientists warn that by the time we realise the severe effects of tropical deforestation, it will be 20 years too late.
Can tropical deforestation affect our everyday lives? Now, you should have got the answer.
51. The underlined word "synthetics" probably means .
A. natural rubber B. tropical materials
C. man-made material D. commercial rubber
52. In the last paragraph the author tries to .
A. tell people how to avoid the tropical deforestation
B. persuade people to buy something synthetic
C. show us how important it is to protect the tropical forests
D. let people realise the effect of tropical deforestation
53. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. The forests are losing their fun_ction in turning carbon dioxide into oxygen.
B. Many of our daily uses are related to the tropical forests.
C. Tropical plants can be used to make industrial products.
D. High carbon dioxide levels will make the earth warmer.
54. The author's attitude towards the tropical deforestation is .
A. puzzling B. cold C. supporting D. opposed
55. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. Tropical Forests B. Saving the Tropical Forests
C. Tropical Forests and Our Life D. The Greenhouse Effects

You may think birthdays mean only cake, presents, and a sweet song -- "Happy Birthday". However, there are many varieties of birthday celebrations. In the West, many birthday traditions come from an ancient belief that bad spirits showed up on a person's birthday. To drive troublemaking spirits away, friends would visit each other on their birthdays. Today, people still get together for birthday parties. But around the world, birthdays are celebrated in many different ways.
In eastern Canada, children get their noses covered with butter on their birthdays. The butter is supposed to make children too slippery for bad luck to stick to them. Irish people lift birthday children upside down and hit them lightly on the floor for every year of their age. Mexico also has a unique birthday tradition. A paper-made animal is filled with candy and toys and hung from the ceiling. The birthday child with his eyes covered then tries to hit the animal with a stick until it bursts open.

Welcome to today's business opportunities on the Internet. One such opportunity is a program called Adsense from the major search engine, Google. Basically, Adsense is a simple and easy way for Website owners to place ads on their sites as a means of earning income. You simply insert certain lines of code and then receive a certain percentage of resulting money.
As you can see, the Adsense program can be beneficial to both sides in allowing advertisers to spread the word about their products and services, while Websites who display the ads can earn money to support their own businesses or interests. Visit the Google Website and read the Terms of Service to learn more about this program and see if Adsense is right for you.

W: Not bad. And what was your name?
M: It's Ben, but everyone calls me B. J. And, uh, what do you do, Sh . . . Sharon?
W: I 'm a graduate student majoring in TESL.

Hello my name's Art. I 'm 74 years old and I live in a retirement community with my wife Selma. I retired about twelve years ago from the bicycle business. I was in the bicycle business for thirty- five years. Twenty of the thirty - five years I ran my own business. After I decided to sell my business, I became an engineer. I worked at being an engineer for five years and then I retired. I joined in a group for the people who retire. The group requires you be forty - eight years or older. In the group I took part in many activities, oil painting, water color painting, stain glass projects. My major activity, however, is golf. Weather permitting, I play every day. We have a golf course in the community, and since I play more often than I used to before I retired, my game has improved very much.
