The latest United Nations report on the AIDS spread paints a sad picture. It concludes that the regions of the world most affected by AIDS will experience rapid increases in death among young adults. This will have serious social and economic results.
The spread of AIDS and the virus that causes it, HIV, is particularly destructive(破坏性的) in Africa. It is estimated that in sub-Saharan Africa, over twenty-four million adults and children are now living with HIV. In sixteen sub-Saharan countries, according to the UN, at least ten percent of the people between the ages of fifteen and forty-nine are HIV positive(阳性).In South Africa and Zimbabwe, half the people between those ages may die of AIDS. In Botswana, about one in three adults is infected and some two thirds of the country’s fifteen-year-old boys may die before they grow up.

It is important that the governments and citizens of those nations most affected by AIDS do their part to fight against it. Do you know that you can use your watch as a compass (指南针) on a sunny day? Take a watch and point the hour-hand in the direction (方向) of the sun. Imagine a line which runs from the center of the watch through a point half-way between the hour-hand and number one. This line will surely point south.
If you know astronomy a little, you will understand why this works. In the northern half of the earth, the sun is in the south at noon. In Russia, the real noon is one o’clock. If at that time we point the hour-hand at the sun, the hour-hand and number one will point south. That is why you must imagine a line which will run from the center of the watch through a point half-way between the hour-hand and number one. It will point south. If you are in the southern part of our planet, you must point number 12 at the sun. The line which you can imagine between number twelve and the hour-hand will then show south.
49. When we carry out this experiment in the northern part of the earth, we should point _____ at the sun.
A. number 12 B. the minute-hand C. the hour-hand D. number one

London has a new magazine. But it is not printed on paper. Everyone who has a television can receive it because it is on TV.
In order to read this magazine you have to have a decoder. Each page of it is numbered, so you only have to dial the number to choose which subject you want to read about. There is a wide choice ---- every thing is included from cooking to the latest sports news.
If you want to read the news, the first thing you have to do is to turn to the index page which has an easy-to-remember page number, 100 for example. Then you start choosing what you want to read. The news is on pages 101 to 109 so you push out the numbers and the news appears written across your screen. Perhaps you want to go out in the afternoon, so you press 181, and a brightly colored weather map appears on the screen. But the weather is terrible so you decide to go shopping and dial 162 for a list of the week’s best bargains. But should you drive or take the train? To answer that question you only have to press 189 for the traffic report. It is very simple to use. But probably the best thing about the service is that it is being updated all the time. Journalists type new material directly on to the screen and whole pages of the magazine can be replaced in minutes.
London already has three services. One, transmitted by TV, is called ORACLE while the other two, on BBC, are called CEEFAX because they let you see facts. Although CEEFAX and ORACLE have been operating for some time, they have not been well publicized. BBC engineers do not think that their idea will ever replace books and newspapers because they can be taken with you everywhere. But many people would agree that this is a break through as great as the invention of printing, which could changes not just our reading habits but our whole way of life.
The novelty (新颖) of the magazine lies in ______.
A. its paper less B. its unique viewpoint
C. its simplicity D. its quickness in transmission
54. We can know from the passage that _______.
A. the magazine is available at any local newsagent
B. most of the postmen in London will lose their jobs someday

D. everyone can read this magazine if they have television
55. In the sentence “Each page of it is numbered”, here “it” refers to the _______.

56. According to the passage, the “decoder” is used to help people ______.
A. calculate the sum of certain figures

How do successful people think? What drives them? Interviews and investigations indicate that there are several keys to success that successful people share.
First of all, successful people never blame someone or something outside of themselves for their failure to go ahead. They realize that their future lies in their own hands. They understand that they cannot control things in life, such as nature, the past and other people. But in the meantime, they are well aware that they can control their own thoughts and actions. They take responsibility for their life and regard this as one of the most empowering (给人以权力的) things they can do. Perhaps what most separate successful people from others is that they live life “on purpose” — they are doing what they believe they are put here to do. In their opinion, having a purpose in their life is the most important element that enables them to become fully functioning people. They hold that when they live their life on purpose, their main concern is to do the job right. They love what they do — and it shows. People want to do business with them because of their commitment (投入,献身). To live their life on purpose, successful people find a cause they believe in and create a business around it. Besides, they never easily give up. Once they have set up goals in their life, they are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. Top achievers always bear in mind that they don’t have forever. Rather than seeing it negative or depressing, they use the knowledge to spur themselves on and go after what they want energetically and passionately.

C. do business with many people D. do all of the above-mentioned
60. The underlined pronoun “it” in Para. 2 refers to ______.

My name is Xiao Mei. I’m a student in Grade Two of a senior middle school. One day after school, my classmate Chen Ying and I went home tighter. We saw an old lady knocked down by a motorcycle. The driver ran away on his motorcycle. Chen Ying and I ran over to find that the old lady’s head was bleeding. She had already lost consciousness. Immediately I took out my handkerchief and covered the wound with it. At the same time I asked Chen Ying to find a car. Soon Chen Ying came back with a taxi. Together we put the old lady into the taxi and drove her to the nearest hospital. The old lady was saved and we also felt very happy
