Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about 19 students who do 20 work while also keeping high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong negative influences on study.
Most students don’t view the relationship between study and work correctly. In my opinion, if it isn’t a must for financial reasons, students should be careful about taking up a part-time job.

The standard of living of any country means the average person’s share of the goods and services which the country produces. A country’s standard of living, therefore, depends mainly on its capacity to produce wealth. “Wealth” in this sense is not money, for we do not live on money but on things that money can buy: “goods” such as food and clothing, and “services” such as transport and entertainment.
A country’s capacity to produce wealth depends upon many factors, most of which have an effect on one another. Wealth depends to a great extent upon a country’s natural resources, such as coal, gold, and other minerals, water supply and so on.
Next to natural resources comes the ability to put them to use. China is perhaps as well off as the U.S.A. in natural resources, but suffered for many years from various wars, and for this and other reasons was unable to develop her resources. Another important factor is the technical efficiency of a country’s people. Old countries that have trained numerous skilled craftsmen and technicians are better placed to produce wealth than countries whose workers are largely unskilled. Wealth also produces wealth. As a country becomes wealthier, its people have a large amount of saving, and can put their savings into factories and machines which will help workers to produce more goods in their working day.

Some of the most poignant moments I spent as a vet are those spent with my clients assisting the transition of my animal patients from this world to the next. When living becomes a burden, whether from pain or loss of normal functions, I can help a family by ensuring that their beloved pet has an easy passing. Making this final decision is painful, and I have often felt powerless to comfort the sorrowful owners.
That was before I met Shane.
I had been called to examine a ten-year-old blue heeler (赫勒犬) named Belker who had developed a serious health problem. The dog’s owners—Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane—were all very fond of Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.
I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia (安乐死) procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made the arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt Shane could learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, cried out, “I know why.”
Slightly shocked, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next surprised me greatly —I’d never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, “Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life —like loving everybody and being nice, right?” The four-year-old continued, “Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”
9. The underlined word “poignant” in Para. 1 means ________.
A. happy B. puzzling
C. sad D. difficult
10. What does the author do when an animal is seriously ill according to the passage?
A. He brings the animal back to life.
B. He helps the owner to find new ones.
C. He looks after the animal for the owners.
D. He puts the animal to painless death.
11. After he met Shane, the writer .
A. knew how to comfort the owners who had lost
their pets
B. knew why animals lived a shorter life than humans
C. understood the real meaning of life
D. didn’t comfort the pet owners
12. What Shane said suggested that ________.
A. it was natural that animals should live a shorter life than humans
B. he didn’t know anything about animals and humans
C. what really matters is love, not the length of a life
D. people should treat animals as friends
D
If the salinity of ocean waters is analyzed, it is found to vary only slightly from place to place. However, some of these small changes are important. There are three basic processes that cause a change in oceanic salinity. One of these is the subtraction (减少) of water from the ocean by means of evaporation—change of liquid water to water vapor (蒸汽). In this manner, the salinity is increased, since the salts stay behind.
The opposite of evaporation is precipitation(降水), such as rain, by which water is added to the ocean. Here the ocean is being diluted (冲淡) so that the salinity is decreased. This may occur in areas of high rainfall or in coastal regions where rivers flow into the ocean.
Normally, in tropical regions where the sun is very strong, the ocean salinity is somewhat higher than it is in other parts of the world where there is not as much evaporation. Similarly, in coastal regions where rivers dilute the sea, salinity is somewhat lower than in other oceanic areas.
A third process by which salinity may be altered is associated with the formation and melting of sea ice. When seawater is frozen, the dissolved materials are left behind. In this manner, seawater directly beneath freshly formed sea ice has a higher salinity than it did before the ice appeared. Of course, when this ice melts, it will tend to decrease the salinity of the surrounding water.
In the Weddell Sea of America, the densest water in the oceans is formed as a result of this freezing process, which increases the salinity of cold water. This heavy water sinks and is found in the deeper portions of the oceans of the world.
13. All of the following are processes that decrease salinity EXCEPT ________.
A. diluting of rivers B. evaporation
C. melting of sea ice D. precipitation
14. The salinity of the oceanic water is generally higher in ________.
A. rainy regions B. coastal regions
C. turbulent (狂风大作的) areas D. tropical areas
15. The Weddell Sea is mentioned in the passage to ________.
A. give an example of cold water salinity
B. compare Antarctic waters with Arctic waters
C. point out the location of deep waters
D. indicate this body of water has salinity variations
