第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
Some people say that the best way to reduce the size of your waist is to do stomach exercise. Many people believe that when specific muscles are exercised, the fatty tissues (组织) in the immediate area are burned up. The truth is that exercise burns fat from all over the body and not from one specific area. Of course, if you reduce the fat throughout your body, you will certainly see results around your waist too.
Some people believe that you need to exercise twice a week in order to keep a sufficient level of physical fitness. However, studies directed by American scientists show that unexercised muscles lose their strength very quickly. Within 48 to 72 hours, you must use the muscles again to reestablish (重建) the good physical effects. And what does that mean to you American scientists concluded that while daily exercise is most helpful, exercising every other day or three days a week will keep a sufficient level of physical fitness.
Is it true that you burn more calories running one mile than walking the same distance The answer is no. The truth is that you use the same amount of energy whether you walk or run the mile, since in both cases you are moving the same weight the same distance. The speed does not matter. Of course, if you run rather than walk for 30 minutes, you will cover more distance, and therefore burn more calories.
If your breathing doesn’t return to normal within 5 minutes after you finish exercising, you have exercised too much. Five minutes or so after exercising, your breathing should be normal, your heart shouldn’t be beating loudly, and you shouldn’t be tired.
56. If you want to reduce the fat around your waist, you should ____.
A. do stomach exercise B. exercise the waist
C. exercise all the muscles of your body D. run fast for 30 minutes
57. From the second paragraph, we learn that ____.

C. muscles lose their strength after 48 hours
D. we should exercise every other day, or three days a week

A. you will lose more weight running one hour than walking one hour
B. whether you run one mile or walk the same distance, you use the same amount of energy
C. you will lose more weight running one mile than walking the same distance
D. both A and B
59. If you have exercised too much, _______.
A. your breathing will take longer than 5 minutes to return to normal after you finish exercising
B. your breathing will return to normal within 5 minutes after finishing exercising
C. your heart will not be beating loudly
D. you will be too tired to move
60. This passage tells us that _________.
A. it is better to do more running than walking
B. the more exercise you do, the healthier you will be
C. the unexercised muscles must be used again within 48 to 72 hours
D. in order to lose weight, you have to run fast

We have all experienced days when everything goes wrong. A day may begin well enough, but suddenly everything seems to get out of control. Sometimes a single unimportant event may cause a number of things to happen. Let us suppose that you are preparing a meal and keeping an eye on the baby at the same time. The telephone rings and this causes your troubles to begin. While you are on the phone, the baby pulls the tablecloth off the table, destroying your half-prepared meal. You hang up hurriedly and attend to your baby. Meanwhile, the meal gets burnt. As if this is not enough to bring you to tears, your husband arrives home, unexpectedly bringing three guests to dinner.
Things can also go wrong on the road. During rush hour one evening two cars collided and the drivers began to argue. The woman driver behind the two cars happened to be a learner. She got into a panic and stopped her car. This forced the driver following her to stop suddenly. This driver’s wife was sitting beside him holding a large cake, and as she was thrown forward, the cake went right through the window and landed on the road. A truck driver seeing a cake flying through the air slammed on the brakes. The truck was carrying empty beer bottles and hundreds of them slid off the back of the truck onto the road, causing a terrible traffic jam. It took the police an hour to get the traffic on the move again. In the meantime, the truck driver had to sweep up hundreds of broken bottles. Only two dogs were enjoying themselves, for they were happily having what was left of the cake.
61. If you want to answer the phone without any trouble, you’d better ___________ .

C
The concept of health holds different meanings for different people and groups. These meanings have also changed over time. This change is no more evident than in Western society today, when notions of health and health promotion are being challenged and expanded in new ways.
For much of recent Western history, health has been viewed in the physical sense only. That is, good health has been connected to the smooth mechanical operation of the body, while ill health has been attributed to a breakdown in this machine. Health in this sense has been defined as the absence of disease or illness and is seen in medical terms.
In the late 1940s the World Health Organization challenged this physically and medically oriented (导向的) view of health. They stated that health is a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being and is not merely the absence of disease (WHO, 1946). Health and the person were seen more holistically (mind / body / spirit) and not just in physical terms.
The 1970s was a time of focusing on the prevention of disease and illness by emphasizing the importance of the lifestyle and behaviour of the individual. Specific behaviours which were seen to increase risk of disease, such as smoking, lack of fitness and unhealthy eating habits, were targeted. Creating health meant providing not only medical health care, but also health promotion programs and policies which would help people maintain healthy behaviours and lifestyles. While this individualistic healthy lifestyle approach to health worked for some (the wealthy members of society), it was of little benefit to people experiencing poverty, unemployment, underemployment or who had little control over the conditions of their daily life.
During the 1980s and 1990s there has been a growing swing away from seeing lifestyle risks as the root cause of poor health. While lifestyle factors still remain important, health is being viewed also in terms of the social, economic and environmental contexts in which people live. This broad approach to health is called the socio-ecological view of health.
At the Ottawa Conference in 1986, a charter was developed which outlined new directions for health promotion based on the socio-ecological view of health. This charter, known as the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, remains as the backbone of health action today. In exploring the scope of health promotion it states that:
Good health is a major resource for social, economic and personal development and an important dimension (尺度) of the quality of life. Political, economic, social, cultural, environmental, behavioural and biological factors can all favour health or be harmful to it. (WHO, 1986)
66. From the passage, we can infer that _________.
A. good health means not having any illness

C. health has always been viewed in terms of the social, economic and environmental contexts in which people live
D. health has always been considered a major resource for social, economic and personal development and an important dimension of quality of life

After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a spe cial student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me. I was told it would mean a great deal to him, so I agreed.
During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症). When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to five, and then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dreams.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me ” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me. When we had finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I had won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”
Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before:
Dear Dick,
My mum said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live any more, but I still smile as much as I can.
I told you someday that I would go to the Olympics and win a gold medal, but I know now I will never get to do that. However, I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.
Your friend,
Matthew

A. the boy never complained about how unlucky he was to have this disease

A beautiful, expensively dressed lady complained to her psychiatrist (精神病医师) that she felt that her whole life was empty; it had no meaning.
So the psychiatrist called over the old lady who cleaned the office floors, and then said to the rich lady, “I’m going to ask Mary to tell you how she found happiness. All I want you to do is to listen.”
So the old lady put down her broom, sat on a chair and told her story, “Well, my husband died of malaria and three months later my only son was killed by a car. I had nobody … I had nothing left. I couldn’t sleep; I couldn’t eat; I never smiled at anyone; I even thought of taking my own life. Then one evening, a little kitten followed me home from work. Somehow I felt sorry for that kitten. It was cold outside, so I decided to let the kitten in. I got it some milk, and it licked the plate clean. Then it purred comfortably and rubbed against my legs, and for the first time in months, I smiled. Then I stopped to think; if helping a little kitten could make me smile, maybe doing something for people could __________. So the next day, I baked some biscuits and took them to a neighbor who was sick in bed. Every day I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me so happy to see them happy. Today, I don’t know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do. I’ve found happiness, by giving it to others.”

Every year, a $ 25,000 award is given to outstanding teachers from all over the country for their contributions to education. Special education teacher Charles Hall is one of the 100 winners this year.
Since 1995, Charles Hall has been teaching children at Beilder School. He teaches science. Hall’s students are all boys from 8 to 14 years old, who have a wide range of disabilities. At the beginning, it’s very hard for him to communicate with the children, but he is very patient and looks on all the students as his sons, helping every student when they are in trouble. At last, all the students like him very much. Students, like Nomai James, feel fortunate to have Mr Hall as their teacher. “He’s like a father to me. If I come in overly excited, he’ll talk to me and tell me that I need to calm down,” said Nomai.

We know that human society is full of tests and trials and that flowers from a greenhouse can never withstand a storm. Therefore, in order to enable a child to grow healthily, parents must make him eat bitter foods, do hard work and be sent to places where he can get the fullest training and knowledge.
I grew up in an ordinary family, which is not so well off. I could understand the hardships my parents were bearing at that time. Therefore, I study very hard now in the hope of entering the university and changing the situation of my family and me. I think that in a certain sense, difficult situations can stimulate a person’s potential, and pave the way for him to success. One can be strong, brave and faithful after all these hardships he has gone through. All in all, as far as I am concerned, I think hard life is good for children.

第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
Dear Anne,
I like your column very much. I met a girl four years ago at a gym. She was the one who originally approached me and we became good friends. Then one day, she made me really angry, so angry that I just left and we never saw each other again.
Looking back, I really regret ending things that way. It was a cowardly act on my part, but I had a terrible temper at that time and let the smallest thing get to me. Recently, I’ve started thinking about her again and I looked up her e-mail address. I thought about writing to say “Hi” and apologize for what I did but I’m not sure. She could still be angry with me, or maybe she has forgotten me. I feel very lonely and I want to see her again. What should I do
Tom
Dear Tom,
She may still be angry with you, and she may have forgotten the friendship between you, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve an apology. Tom, how many of us have wished for the day that someone who treated us badly saw the light and finally owned up But we rarely get that kind of expected result. So sure, e-mail her and say “Hi”.
Tell her you have been thinking about her and just want to apologize for getting angry and being a coward by walking out on her. But you should remember if she thinks you’re apologizing just because you are lonely, she might dismiss your sincerity. Therefore, don’t mention that. If she wants to see you again, she’ll make sure that happens.
Even if she doesn’t want to be your friend, I can assure you, she’ll appreciate the gesture. And it might make you think twice next time you get angry.
Anne

People often say, “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” and “Behind every successful man there is a woman.” Both these sayings mean the same thing. Men rule the world, but their wives rule them.
Most American women like making their husbands and sons successful, but some of them want more for themselves. They want good jobs, and when they work they want to be paid. They also want to be as successful as men.
The American women’s liberation movement was started by women who didn’t want to stand behind successful men. They wanted to stand beside men and have the same chances for success. They didn’t want to be told that certain jobs or offices were closed to them. They refused to work side by side with men who did the same work for a higher pay.
A liberated woman must be proud of being a woman and have confidence in herself. If somebody says to her, “You have come a long way, baby.” She will smile and answer, “Not nearly as far as I’m going to go, baby.” This movement is quite new, and many American women don’t agree with it. But it has already made some important changes in women’s lives and in men’s lives, too.
61. From the first paragraph, we can learn that ________.

A. stay at home to help their husbands be successful
B. have the same chances for success as men
C. get the same pay when doing the same work as men

64. By saying “Not nearly as far as I’m going to go”, a liberated woman is stating that _______.
A. she has nearly got to her destination
B. there is a little more than what she wants
C. she will never get to her ideal destination
D. it is not far enough and she will go a lot further
65. In this passage, the author suggests that in the United States _______.

There is an English saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The group that tolerated (忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny programme. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.
66. According to the passage, which of the following statements is WRONG

B. Laughter can make you become old quickly.
C. Laughter helps to reduce pain.
D. Laughter, just like physical exercise, is good for our body.
67. The underlined word “diminishes” in the third paragraph means “ ”.
A. delays B. prevents C. increases D. reduces
68. Why do doctors hold laughter clinics
A. Because they want to earn more money.
B. Because they think they will help the patients recover from illnesses.
C. Because they want to improve their patients’ health.
D. Because they want their patients to laugh more.
69. According to the author, we should __________ in our life.
A. laugh as much as possible B. watch more funny films
C. smile all the time D. spend time in the laughter clinics
70. What would be the best title for this passage
A. Both laughter and physical exercise are good for health.
B. Laughter clinics can help patients improve their condition.
C. Laughter can reduce the effect of pain.
D. Laughter is the best medicine.

Britain almost more than any other country in the world must seriously face the problem of building upwards, that is to say, of accommodating a considerable proportion of its population in high-rise blocks of flats. It is said that an Englishman objects to this type of existence, but if this is so, he differs from most inhabitants of the world today.
In the past blocks of flats have been associated with the lower income groups, and many of them lacked the obvious provisions, such as central heating, constant hot water supply, electrically operated lifts, and so on. Some even didn’t have facilities for disposal of dust and rubbish or storage places for baby carriages on the ground floor. Many lacked playgrounds for children on the top of their buildings, and drying grounds for washing. It is likely that the dispute regarding flats versus (对抗) individual houses will continue to rage on for a long time as far as Britain is concerned. And it is unfortunate that there should be hot feelings on both sides whenever this subject is raised. Those who oppose the building of flats base their cases primarily on the assumption (设想) that everyone prefers an individual home and garden and on the high cost per unit of accommodation. They, however, ignore the higher cost of providing full services to a scattered community and the cost in both money and time commuting to work for the suburban resident.
71. It can be inferred from the passage that ____.
A. unlike most people in other countries, English people dislike living in flats
B. people in most countries of the world today like living in the suburbs
C. people in Britain are eager to move into high-rise blocks of flats
D. modern flats in Britain fail to provide the necessary facilities for living
72. What can we learn about the blocks of flats built in the past from the passage
A. They were conveniently located.
B. The people who lived there were not rich.
C. They were usually not large enough for big families to live in.
D. The children who lived in them could play on the top of the buildings.
73. Some people don’t like living in flats because ____.
A. they must pay much money
B. they prefer to live in a house with a garden
C. there is no central heating and constant hot water supply
D. the disposal of rubbish is a problem for people living in flats
74. Some people don’t like living in suburban houses because ____.
A. the houses are not large enough
B. people who live in the suburbs must pay much money for the service work
C. people who live in the suburbs have to spend a lot of money and time traveling to work every day
D. it can be difficult for them to do some shopping and to get along well with their neighbors
75. This passage is mainly about __________.
A. living in high-rise blocks of flats
B. living in the suburbs
C. the difference in living in a flat in Britain and living in a flat in other countries
D. the attitude of British people towards living in flats

Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia was delivered to my house. No card came with it. Calls to the flower-shop were not helpful at all. After a while I stopped trying to discover the sender’s name and just delighted at the beautiful white flower in soft pink paper.
But I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent ______________________. My mother encouraged these imaginings. She’d ask me if there was someone to whom I had done the special kindness. Perhaps it was the old man across the street whose mail I’d delivered during the winter. As a girl, though, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy I had run into. One month before my graduation, my father died. I felt so sad that I became completely uninterested in my upcoming graduation dance, and I didn’t care whether I had a new dress or not. But my mother, despite her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved and lovable. In truth, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia — lovely, strong and perfect with perhaps a bit of mystery (神秘).
My mother died ten days after I was married. I was 22. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming.

Last week we went to the countryside for a picnic. We left quite early before there was too much traffic. After about two hours we came to a nice place. It was near a river, with some large trees beside it. We stopped there and went for a swim. It was very hot. But the water was very cool and refreshing. After having a swim, we had lunch, some sandwiches, in the cool shade under the trees. Then we went for a walk, and saw some beautiful birds and flowers. You never see such beautiful scenes downtown. We were so happy that we didn’t leave until it was dark.

My View on Money
In modern society it seems impossible to live without money. For instance, a country needs money to develop its economy and to improve people’s living standards. For a person suffering from poverty or a serious disease, he has to go hungry or to wait to die. Money is even regarded as a symbol of wealth and status.
Perhaps sometimes money is very important. With lots of money we can live comfortably. But I don’t think it is all-powerful. There are still things like friendship and love more valuable than money. There are also certain things that money cannot buy, such as health, youth and happiness. For a millionaire suffering from a serious cancer, money cannot serve its purpose. Money is only a medium of exchange, a symbol of our work or achievement. Therefore, we should earn money by honest and legal means. Only when money is obtained by hard and honest work can it make us really happy.

With changing times and 47 influences, youngsters no longer know what is interpreted as disrespect to elders. Youngsters should 48 express their views and if there are arguments, they should not 49 their voices.

第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
When I was an official of a school in Palo Alto, California, Polly Tyner, the president of our board, wrote a letter that was printed in the Palo Alto Times. Polly’s son, Jim, had great difficulty in school. He was classified as the educationally handicapped and required a great deal of patience on the part of his parents and teachers. But Jim was a happy kid with a great smile that lit up the room. His parents knew his difficulties, but they always tried to help him see his strengths so that he could walk with pride. Shortly after Jim finished high school, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. After his death, his mother submitted this letter to the newspaper.
“Today we buried our 20-year-old son. He was killed in a motorcycle accident on Friday night. How I wish I had known that the last time I had talked to him would be the last time. If I had only known that, I would have said to him, ‘Jim, I love you and I’m always so proud of you.’ I would have taken the time to count the many blessings he had brought to the lives of the people who loved him. I would have taken the time to appreciate his beautiful smile, his laughter, and his genuine love to other people.
“When I put all the good things on the scale and try to balance them with all the irritating (恼人的) things such as the radio that was always too loud, the haircut that wasn’t to our liking, the dirty socks under the bed, etc., I find that the irritations really don’t amount to much.
“I won’t get another chance to tell my son all that I would have wanted him to hear, but, other parents, do have a chance. Tell your young people what you would want them to hear as if it may be your last conversation. The last time I talked to Jim was the morning of the day when he died. He called me to say, ‘Hi, Mom! I just called to say I love you. You have to go to work now. Bye.’ That day, he gave me something to treasure forever. ”
If there is any purpose at all for Jim’s death, maybe it is to make others appreciate life more and to tell people, especially family members, that they should take the time to let each other know just how much they care. You may never have another chance. Do it today!

While IQ (Intelligence Quotient) tells you how smart you are. EQ (Emotional Quotient) tells you how well you use your smartness. Professor Salovery, the psychologist who created the term, EQ, says that it is IQ that gets you hired but it is EQ that gets you promoted.
Supported by his research, he suggested that when predicting future successes, a person’s brainpower, as measured by IQ tests, might actually matter less than a person’s character, or EQ. Professor Salovery may be correct. For example, have you ever wondered why some of the best and smartest students in your class end up failing exams Perhaps it is because of their EQ. People often make the mistake of thinking that EQ is the opposite of IQ. It is not. Although it is hoped that people have both high EQs and IQs, there is little doubt that those with low EQs have a hard time surviving in life.
For a long time, researchers discussed if a person’s IQ could be raised. The geneticists said no, while the social scientists said yes. Furthermore, the social scientists said that it was possible to improve a person’s EQ, particularly in terms of “people skills”, such as understanding and communication.
Recently, a professor released the findings of a study on senior high school students. When some normal students were introduced to some disabled students, they found that afterwards they were more willing to help people in difficulties. At the same time, there was a marked change in the disabled students’ attitudes. They became more positive about their disabilities and were more eager to try new things. People with high EQs often have positive attitudes towards life and are open to different ideas, so they tend to be more creative in their thinking. Please remember that having a high IQ is helpful but having a high EQ might even be more helpful.
61. According to Professor Salovery, what factor matters the most in predicting whether a person will be successful or not

All Eskimos live most of their lives close to sea or fresh water. They may follow game inland for several hundred miles, but they always return to the shores of rivers, lakes, or seas. Eskimo land has a bare look. Large rocks, pebbles, and sand cover much of the surface. Plants called lichen (地衣) grow on the rocks, and where there is enough soil, grass, flowers, and even small bushes manage to live. No trees can grow on Eskimo land, so geographers sometimes call it the Arctic plains. There are some animals in Eskimo land, such as rabbits, which eat the plants. Other animals, like the white fox and the gray wolf, eat the rabbits. The Eskimo is a meat-eater, too, and may even eat a wolf when food is scarce.
The Eskimo year has two main parts: a long, cold winter and a short, cool summer. Spring and fall are almost too short to be noticed. Summer is the best time, as food is usually plentiful. But it is also the time when Eskimos are very busy. Winter is never far away, and the men must bring home extra meat for the women to prepare and store, for seldom can enough animals be killed in winter to feed a family.
The Far North is sometimes called the land of the midnight sun. This is true in the middle of summer, for between April 21st and August 21st the sun never sets in Northern Greenland. But in midwinter the Far North is a land with no sunshine at all. Around Oct. 21st the Eskimos of Northern Greenland see the sun set directly south of them, and they don’t see it again until February 22nd. All places on earth get about the same amount of daylight during a year. As a result, if summer is lighter, winter has to be darker.
Winter nights in the Far North are seldom pitch-black. As in the rest of the world, the stars and moon provide a little light. The northern lights also help the Eskimo to see. And with the ground covered with snow, even a little light is reflected back to the Eskimo’s eyes.
71. Which of the following statements is NOT true

A. Dark with a little light.
B. A little dark.

A. Eskimos are more likely to eat wolves in summer
B. Eskimo women are responsible for housework
C. meat is the main source of food for the Eskimo
D. hunting is an important part of Eskimo life
75. Why is summer lighter in the Far North
A. Because the Far North is far away from the sun.

C. Because the sun never sets in midsummer.
D. Because people see the sun set directly south of them.

If you’re a person who wants to be fit, here are some suggestions for you.
1. Get to know yourself well.
You should know what the right weight is for your age, height, and body type. You can check with your parents or with a doctor. Only by knowing enough about yourself can you make a suitable fitness plan for yourself.
2. Eat a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables.
You may have a favorite food, but it is best to eat a variety of foods. If you eat different kinds of foods, you’re more likely to _______________ your body needs.
3. Drink water and milk more often.
When you’re really thirsty, water is the No.1 thirst quencher. Try to limit the intake of sugary soft drinks, like sodas and juice cocktails. They contain a lot of added sugar. Also you need calcium to grow strong bones, and milk is a great source of this mineral. Two cups of milk (about half a liter) will work for you each day.
4. Limit screen time.
What’s screen time It’s the amount of time you spend watching TV, DVDs and videos, playing hand-held computer games and using the computer. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time is available for active stuff, like basketball, bike riding and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time. Don’t be a couch potato.
5. Be active.

Text 10
The manager of a large office building received many complaints about the lift service in the building. He hired a group of engineers to study the situation. They suggested two solutions: 1. adding more lifts of the same type; 2. replacing the lifts with faster ones.
The manager considered that both suggestions were too expensive. So he asked a professor to study the problem. The professor noticed that many people felt angry because they thought they had to wait too long for the lift. However, the professor found that they only had to wait for quite a short time. He realized that the reason why they felt angry is that they had nothing to do while they were waiting for the lifts. He suggested a simple, cheap solution to the manager. This was accepted and complaints stopped immediately. The solution was to place a large mirror next to the lifts.

Are Pets Good for People
Some people say the great advantage of keeping pets is that pets can keep us company, and we all need companions to keep us feeling happy. Often a cat or a dog can comfort us at times when human words don’t help. A pet in a family can help to keep people in touch with the more natural animal world.
Others think that keeping pets is just a waste of time and resources. And some pets can cause serious illness. Besides, some people nowadays are so crazy about pets that they even neglect caring for others’ health and the hygiene of the public places.
Personally, I agree with the later argument. It is true that pets can keep us feeling happy, but I think, we should think of others’ happiness and health, and pets are not good for the benefit of all people.

For many years, women could only be seen on the seat behind the men operating the two-wheeled motorcycle. Now more and more women are taking the front seat. More than twenty million people in the United States ride motorcycles.
Since 1998 the number of female bikers has risen sharply. Lady Sport Riders began in 1999 in Washington. The women formed the organization to share their love of motorcycle riding. But later it wanted to be more than just an organization for women to gather and ride motorcycles, so it started to organize events that help national health organizations and women’s shelters. It also permits women to share a strong sisterhood, and gives financial awards to poor students. Like other motorcycle clubs, the members of Lady Sport Riders also help their community.
Different from male riders, female riders ride for more than fun. This sport gives women a sense of freedom and control. Female riders have helped change motorcycle culture. More than five years ago manufacturers began making equipment especially for women. Some bikes now have smaller, softer seats and controls that are easier to reach. Modern clothes for riding now look good and still provide protection. In the past, women rode motorcycles that traveled at a moderate speed. Now theirs are as powerful as the ones men ride. Safety is very important when riding because the risk of injury is high. So the women wear protective clothing and equipment at all times, especially for the head.

About 97% of the world’s water is salty and is found in our oceans and seas. But, as we can’t drink seawater, how can it be important
Every part of our seas and oceans contains an amazing number of animals and fish that live at different ocean depths. Most of the different species of animals and fish depend on simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae (海藻) drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produce over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important seawater is!
Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain. The algae are eaten in large amounts by microscopic animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately balanced.
The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man. People once thought that the oceans were so big that it didn’t matter if we dumped rubbish into them or caught huge quantities of fish and whales for food. But we now know this is not true and fish stocks in the oceans have started to drop.
Thankfully, the world is taking steps to protect the future of our oceans by introducing international agreements to protect marine habitats. Most countries have introduced fishing restrictions to protect fish stocks in the oceans and new techniques are being pioneered to cope with pollution. Finally, the importance of protecting oceans is being made known to more people. This is just the beginning of a long process to protect the oceans for our future. We depend on the oceans for fish which are an important part of the human diet. How important seawater is!

Now, we know that if we do not get enough vitamins, we are at risk of developing a number of diseases. As a result, vitamin supplements(补品),though expensive, are popular with people who worry that they are not getting enough vitamins from the foods they eat. But contrary to what many people think, medical experts have found little evidence that most supplements do anything to improve health or protect against disease.
In fact, medical experts warn that taking too many of some vitamins can be harmful. For example, too much vitamin E can cause bleeding. People should discuss what vitamins they take with their doctors, as some vitamins can produce harmful side effects when mixed with medicines.
Experts, however, do say that sometimes vitamins can help prevent disease. People who know they lack a particular vitamin should take vitamin supplements. Some older adults, for example, may not have enough vitamin B-twelve. This is because, as people get older, their body loses its ability to take it from foods. Also, people who spend much time inside may need some extra vitamin D as the skin makes this vitamin from sunlight.
Different vitamins are found in different foods. Vitamin A is found in fish liver oil. It also is in the yellow part of eggs. Sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into vitamin A. Vitamin B-twelve is found in green leafy vegetables and other foods, like fruits. Vitamin K can be found in pork products.
In fact, for most people, a balanced diet can ensure enough of the vitamins our bodies need. So, it is important for us to eat a mixture of foods every day to ensure that we get enough vitamins our bodies need.

A. never to take any vitamin supplements
B. to depend only on food for their vitamins
C. not to take any vitamins together with medicines
D. to consult doctors before taking vitamin supplements
74. For people who lack Vitamin B-twelve, they can eat more from _______.

Being responsible for your money is an important skill to learn — and the sooner you start the better. Whether you are tracking your spending or saving for something special, creating a budget can help you deal with expenses and plan for the future. All you need is paper and a pencil — and some self-control.
First, take a look at our sample monthly budget. Then, use a separate sheet of paper to plan your own. In the first two columns, list your sources of income and how much you expect to earn from them. In the third and fourth columns list what you expect to spend your money on and the amount. The left-hand total should be more than or equal to the right-hand total. If it is, you have an effective budget.
Sample Monthly Budget
Monthly Income Amount Monthly Expenses Amount
Allowance $ 20.00 Snacks $ 26.00
Money earnedselling drinks $ 25.00 Music downloads $ 12.00
Money earnedbabysitting $ 12.50 Movies $ 18.00
Money earneddelivering newspapers $ 30.00 Video records $ 10.00
Total: $ 87.50 Total: $ 66.00
Budgets are not complex, but sticking to them can be tough. When planning your budget, be realistic about your expenses. If you know that you drop $18 at a movie, don’t write $12 in that space simply because you wish you were spending less.
If you are eyeing a big purchase, such as a $150 skateboard, spend less and save more until you have the total amount. No matter how attractive it may be, ________________________. One day, you will thank yourself!

Text 10
Life today has many problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution, as it is bad for all living things.
We need to do more to fight against pollution. Factories must clean waste water before it is released into rivers. We shouldn’t throw our garbage on the ground. We can take the bus to work or share a car with friends. If there are fewer cars on the roads, there will be less air pollution.

书面表达 (One possible version)
Good Manners Matter
As more and more Chinese go on overseas trips, reports about their bad manners flood in. Many overseas Chinese are embarrassed when foreigners ask them if all Chinese talk loudly and spit everywhere. The poor behavior of some Chinese has done great harm to our reputation for having good manners. China has become an important corner of the global village. We have to understand and respect others’ cultures.
We know that it is easier to fall into bad manners than to get into good ones and indeed there are some Chinese people who do have some bad manners, but I firmly believe that we can do something about it. So before you go on your next overseas trip, remember to learn about the culture and people there. Try to say more “Hello” and “Thank you”, and smile to people, even though you don’t know them. You will have a better experience and win respect for yourself as well as your country.
