Riding was the favourite activity of Thomas Jefferson, who was the third President of the United States. He usually rode good horses.
One day, he was riding outside Washington, when a jockey (赛马师) came near. He did not know the President, but his professional eye was attracted by Mr. Jefferson’s horse. He stopped and said that he wanted to buy the horse, but Mr. Jefferson politely refused his offer.
The jockey offered more money for the horse, because the closer he looked at the horse, the more he liked it. All of his offers were refused, which made him angry. He then became rude, but his rudeness left as little an impression as his money, for Jefferson had a very good temper. At last, he hit Mr. Jefferson’s horse with his whip, getting it to run suddenly. This would have thrown a less skillful rider to the ground, but Jefferson stayed on his seat, and controlled his horse well.
The jockey then gave up. He rode with Mr. Jefferson side by side and began to talk with him about politics. Jefferson joined in the conversation. When they got into the city and came close to the gate of the presidential mansion (总统府), Mr. Jefferson stopped, and politely invited the man to enter.
The jockey was surprised and asked,
“Why? Do you live here?”
“Yes” was the simple reply.
“Why, stranger, what’s your name?”
“My name is Thomas Jefferson.”
Embarrassed, the man quickly left, while the President looked at him with a smile and then rode through the gate.

Maybe, just maybe, a large and newly discovered asteroid(小行星) could hit the Earth — but probably not, astronomers said on Wednesday.
They have published a detailed report on the asteroid. It looked at first as if it could be on a collision course (碰撞航向) with the Earth, but it will take several more weeks to see for sure.
They are calling on astronomers around the world to take a look at the mile-wide block of rock, so that its orbit can be calculated.
At the same time, they say the possibility of its actually hitting is one in 6 million.
“I wouldn’t worry about it,” Tim Spahr, astronomer at the Minor Planets Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said in a telephone interview. “Go win the lottery (彩票) first.”
Scientists say that if an asteroid half a mile wide hits the earth, a quarter of the world’s population will be killed. It is believed that a 6-mile-wide asteroid hits the earth every 100 million years. Because of this, the dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago.
The new asteroid, called 2002 NTT, was seen earlier this month. Now 66 million miles away from the earth, it goes around the sun every 2.3 years.
60. From the report we know that ________.
A. the asteroid is sure to hit the earth
B. the asteroid will not hit the earth
C. it is still uncertain whether the asteroid will hit the earth
D. any asteroid could kill a quarter of the world’s population
61. The dinosaurs died out ______, according to the report.
A. because of 2002 NTT B. because of an asteroid
C. without reasons D. for unknown reasons
62. What does the report mainly talk about?
A. Dinosaurs died out about 65 million years ago.
B. Scientists found a new asteroid.
C. 2002 NTT goes around the sun every 2.3 years.
D. A newly-found asteroid might hit the earth.

One day, Tom was very thirsty. He poured some hot water from the thermos into his glass, and then put the cork back. Just as he was turning away from the thermos, the cork jumped up. Tom picked up the cork, put it back and pressed it with his hand. He thought it would stay there this time. But hardly had he picked up his glass when the cork jumped up again, even higher than before. Tom got angry. He pressed the cork with his two hands. To his relief, nothing happened to the cork this time. But to his great surprise, the thermos flew into the air. The steam pressure inside the thermos broke the bottom of the thermos.
答案解析
21. A。That depends. / It all depends. 意为“这很难说”、“得看情况而定”。B项明显错误,C、D两项是肯定的回答,和后文不符。
22. B。be disappointed at sth意为“对某事感到失望”;be disappointed to do sth表示“对做某事感到失望”;be angry with意为“对……感到生气”;depend on意为“依靠”。根据下文,“她”应该是对这件事感到很失望,所以选B。
23. B。这里应该是“科学奖”,表示参加比赛而获得的奖励,所以应该选award。price价格;praise赞扬;reward报酬, 酬金。
24. B。cheer up 鼓舞,使……振作起来;bring up抚养长大;grow up成长,长大;turn up出现;调高(音量)等。
25. A。在名词性从句中要用-ever,表示“无论……”,在状语从句中用-ever或no matter加特殊疑问词都行。前一个空是whatever在主语从句中作宾语,后一个空是whatever在状语从句中作主语。
26. A。“大厅里充满祥和的气氛……”,所以只能A。
27. C。now that既然;as if好像;even though即使;so far到目前为止。根据后面“你已经完成工作了”可以看出这里是一个原因状语从句“既然……”。
28. B。what在后面的分句中作主语,引导主语从句。
29. C。in time“及时”,相当于early enough或soon enough。
30. A。这里不是主语从句,而是由as引导的非限制性定语从句。
31. C。此处为prevent ... (from) ...结构,from 可以省略,carry out和plan之间为被动关系。
32. C。astronomer“天文学家”;astronaut“宇航员,太空人”;astronomy“天文学”;astrology“占星术”。
33. A。that引导主语从句。
34. C。Like what? 意思是“比如说?”
35. C。根据提问回答,这里是祈使句,用动词原形。听力录音原稿:

D. any asteroid could kill a quarter of the world’s population

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分25分)
第一节 阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答下面的问题。
People have written many books for parents on how to deal with children, but few have written books about the opposite side, on how kids can get along with their parents. If such books were written, I’d include the following:
Your parents, older than you, have run into many more problems than you have. Because of this, they may become experts (专家) on almost everything. Be patient. Their trying to show they know all the answers is their way of showing their care and concern. Because they have seen more of life, before you realize that you are running into problems, parents may have noticed that. They may have seen others harm themselves, and when they see the same thing in you, they can’t just stand by and ______________. The world has changed a lot since they were young. They are afraid that you may get into things like fast cars, fast drugs and so on. They are always worried about you.
You may want to cry out “I’m not a baby. I can take care of myself.” But they took total care of you when you were born. They’ve let you go, bit by bit, but see you not quite ready for that total freedom you dream of.
Getting something you want from your parents may cause a big fight. It doesn’t need to be like that! Confrontation (对抗) politics doesn’t work anywhere, in groups, in world politics or within families. Remember, in front of confrontation, both you and your parents are real people, with real feelings.

答案解析
22. B。be disappointed at sth意为“对某事感到失望”;be disappointed to do sth表示“对做某事感到失望”;be angry with意为“对……感到生气”;depend on意为“依靠”。根据下文,“她”应该是对这件事感到很失望,所以选B。

24. B。cheer up 鼓舞,使……振作起来;bring up抚养长大;grow up成长,长大;turn up出现;调高(音量)等。
25. A。在名词性从句中要用-ever,表示“无论……”,在状语从句中用-ever或no matter加特殊疑问词都行。前一个空是whatever在主语从句中作宾语,后一个空是whatever在状语从句中作主语。
26. A。“大厅里充满祥和的气氛……”,所以只能A。

28. B。what在后面的分句中作主语,引导主语从句。
29. C。in time“及时”,相当于early enough或soon enough。

Elias and his grandpa had spent the day on the tractor. They were getting their fields ready for planting. Now they were having a rest in the yard. Elias looked up. A silver moon was shining over the farm. Elias wished his father were with him to enjoy the clear night, but he had been away on business for a whole month. “Hey, Grandpa, what’s that bright star?”
Grandpa looked up. “That’s not a star. I think it might be the planet Jupiter (木星),” Grandpa said. “I just want to get something.” A moment later, Grandpa brought out an old telescope from the house. He set it up in the yard. He aimed the telescope at the light, and then asked Elias to take a look. Grandpa said, “It’s Jupiter, all right. I’m a computer science graduate. Before the war, I was working in an Iraqi software company located in Baghdad. Every day, I would go to the little office which I shared with one female colleague and two men, start up my computer and spend hours staring at little numbers and letters on the screen. It was boring, it was tiring, it was difficult and it was ... wonderful.
When I needed a break, I’d go visit my favorite sites on the Internet, bother my colleagues or talk about “impossible bosses” and “improbable deadlines (期限) of the job”.
I loved my job. I was “good” at my job. I came and went to work on my own. At 8 am I’d walk in with a backpack filled with enough CDs, notebooks, pens and documents. I made as much money as my two male colleagues and got an equal amount of respect from the manager. I thought that was probably because he didn’t know how to deal with the difficulties in his job, so anyone who could do it was worthy of respect, including a girl.
What I’m trying to say is that no matter what people have heard, females in Iraq were a lot better off than females in other parts of the Arab world, including some parts of the Western world because we had equal salaries! We made up over 50% of the workforce. We were doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, professors, architects, and more. We came and went as we pleased. We wore what we wanted within the limit of the rules of a conservative (保守的) society.
46. How many workers were there in the author’s office?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
47. From the third paragraph we learn that ______.
A. the author could do the job better than the manager
B. the author was the best worker in her office
C. the manager respected the author because she is a woman
D. the manager was not satisfied with the author’s work
48. What have other people in the world heard about the women in Iraq?
A. Women in Iraq did much better in the computer industry.
B. Women in Iraq were the most conservative in the Arab world.
C. Women got less respect from the society in Iraq.
D. Women worked harder than men in their companies.
49. Why does the author think that the condition of women in Iraq is much better than that in some other countries?
A. They get equal respect as men. B. They do as much work as men.
C. They earn as much money as men. D. They are free to do anything.
50. The author wrote this passage in order to show us that ______.
A. she did quite well in her job when she was in Iraq
B. many women were suffering in Iraq during the war
C. women were not treated equally in Iraq
D. the condition of women in Iraq was better than what other people thought

Orbiting (环绕) the earth on a ship with no washing machine, what do astronauts do with their dirty underwear (内衣)?
How much underwear would three astronauts need for six months? If they need to have a clean pair every day, that will be at least 540 pairs! There’s no room for those on the space station. Astronauts don’t have a clean pair for each day. They change their underwear once every three or four days. That’s not too bad. Clothes don’t get dirty as quickly there as they do on Earth.
Ships that are sent up to the ISS — International Space Station — can only be used one time. They take what the crew (工作人员) needs. The crew takes the supplies off the ship. Then, they put their trash and dirty clothes on it. When it is full, the ship is sent back to Earth. It burns up in the air over the Pacific Ocean.
Dirty underwear can also be used to grow plants. Pettit, an astronaut, wanted to try to grow some plant seeds, but there’s no soil on the ISS. He decided to use an old pair of underwear. He folded the underwear. Then he sewed them together. He used space toilet paper for the outside! It worked great! The seeds started growing in two days! Russian scientists also got an idea to use bacteria(细菌)to eat the astronauts’ cotton and paper underwear, but this idea can’t be used right now.
51. What does the underlined word “trash” mean in the third paragraph?
A. Supply. B. Rubbish. C. Rag. D. Underwear.
52. The passage above was probably written to ______.
A. introduce how astronauts deal with their dirty underwear
B. let readers know how astronauts wash their underwear C. let readers know how astronauts live in space
D. tell why astronauts have so many pairs of underwear
53. What will the crew take off the ships?
A. Some plants. B. Dirty clothes. C. The supplies. D. Space toilet paper.
54. Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to the passage?
A. The Russians use the ships again and again for transportation.
B. There is a great deal of soil on the ISS, as everybody can see.
C. Clothes don’t get dirty easily on the ISS, as they do on the earth.
D. There are a few washers on the space station right now.
55 How many ways do the astronauts use to deal with their dirty underwear?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.

第二节 读写任务 (共1小题;满分25分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
It’s hard to say whether in the future we will live on another planet. The earth provides for us the right balance of necessary conditions so that we can live in reasonable comfort without artificial (人造的) aid. Through advances in technology, we certainly might be able to create an environment in which we could live on almost any other planet. But whether another planet in space has conditions similar enough to the earth that we would need little or no “artificial environment” is unknown. We might think that such a planet ought to exist, but that doesn’t mean that it necessarily does. The role of science is to take us from what we think “might” be true to what really is true and possible. In order to live on another planet, we must first find other planets (this is an active field of research that astronomers are now making great progress in), determine whether they are suitable for us, and then travel to them. All of these require significant advances in our knowledge and technology. This is not to say that it is beyond our capabilities, but we must consider what would need to be done to do it. It is a question worth considering, and by thinking about it we can certainly learn many exciting things along the way.

第一节 基础写作
One possible version:
The astronauts said that the earth is the most beautiful planet that they have ever seen.
Seen from space, the earth on which we live looks light blue and very beautiful. 70% of its surface is covered with water and 30% land, making a good place for all the living things on it. However, our development is constantly destroying, little by little, the system that supports us. It is high time that we protected our only home from further damage. We should plant more trees to reduce pollution, and save energy to reduce waste.
The beauty of the earth is unique, and we have no choice but to protect it.
第二节 读写任务
One possible version:
Our Benefits from Space Technology Development
Whether or not it is possible for humans to live on other planets is a topic that has been discussed a lot recently. The main question is whether we can find or create an environment, which is suitable for life.
There is no doubt that exploring space is of great value to us. First of all, the environment of other planets could possibly improve crop production, which would prevent people worldwide from lack of food supply. Second, traveling through space and setting up new cities in other plants has long been a dream of ours. It could allow people to explore the mystery of universe. The last but not the least, space exploration might improve our cooperation with other countries in the development of Astronomy and strength of our country against others.
No matter when it happens, space exploration will be beneficial to all people.

四、阅读理解
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C或D)中,选出最佳选项

Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really made a conscious(自觉的)effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.
Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before.
Memory “trick” work the other way as well. Once in a while you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber(理发师)shop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barber shop across the street from my office.
We always seem to find something funny and amusing(有趣的)in incidents caused by people’s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years, and we never got tired of hearing new ones. Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny. There are times when “trick” of our memory can cause us great trouble.
56. If you want to have a good memory, .
A. you should force yourself to remember things
B. you should make a conscious effort of practice and exercise
C. you should never stop learning
D. you should try hard to remember tings
57. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. One night the writer forgot to lock the front door.
B. One night the writer forgot having locked the front door.
C. The writer remembered to lock the door.
D. the writer remembered unlocking the front door.

The food we eat seems to have a great effect on our health. Although science has made big steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of human illness is related to food and forty percent of cancer is related to food as well. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, some researchers realized that things commonly used to keep colour in meats and other food additives(添加剂)caused cancer.
Yet, these additives remain in our food, and it is difficult to know which things on the wrappings(包装)of foods are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to their animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of cows. Sometimes similar tings are supplied to animals not for their health, but just to make a profit.
The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to get a higher price on the market. Although some countries have tried to control such things, the practice continues.

At first, the earth’s surface layer(层)was made up of huge blocks of hard, solid rocks. Then slowly, there rocks broke up into smaller and smaller pieces. Finally stones, pebble(卵石)and grains of sand were formed. Many sorts of plants and animals lived and died on the surface of the earth. Their remains mixed up with the stones, pebbles and formed soil. The outmost layer of the earth is soil.
There are many ways in which large pieces of rock break into smaller ones. Wind, water, heat and cold help to break up rocks. When winds blow grains of sand against a large rock for a long time, the softer layers of the rock are slowly worn away. These leave holes and crack(裂缝)in the rock, which become bigger and finally the rock breaks up into smaller pieces.
The moving water of streams and rivers also help to break up rocks. As the water moves along, it carries with it small pieces of rock. These rub the larger ones. Thus, the larger rocks are worn down to smaller pieces.
The heat of the sun is also helpful to breaking up rocks. When the sun shines, the rocks become very hot. If these rocks are suddenly cooled, they may crack. Ice also plays a part in making soil. Water in the cracks can turn into ice in cold weather. As this happens, it becomes bigger and the cracks become wider, and finally break into smaller pieces.

Therefore, measures must be taken to solve this problem. First of all, we must make good use of water and avoid polluting it. In addition, we can get useful water through purifying rain water or sea water.
