The killer bees are coming! By the time you read this they will have reached Texas. They will also reach all the warmer areas of the United States. Scientists as well as farmers wait for them with a mixture of fear and wonder.
The killer bees should not be coming at a11. Nature did not put them on this direct path for the United States; human beings did. The killer bees are from Africa. But in 1957 a scientist from Brazil got some of these killer bees for his experiments. The aim was to produce a better bee. However, an accident happened: a guest beekeeper let twenty-six of the queen bees escape by mistake. Before long, groups of killer bees took off for the woods.
Since that time, the wild killer bees have multiplied(繁殖)many times over. By 1998, their population was over 1015. They have spread all over South America, Central America, and most of Mexico. The United States is the next stop.
Are the killer bees really killers? Yes, they are. In their first thirty years in America, they have killed thousands of hens, pigs, and other animals. While no one knows the exact number, it is believed that several hundred people have also been killed.
So be careful! Killer bees are on the way. Scientists have no idea what to do with them yet. There must be a way.

The following is a father’s advice to his son/daughter, who has just graduated from high school:
First of all, congratulations on your graduation! Graduation from high school means that a new stage of life is ahead of you. At the beginning of this new stage, I have some advice for you.
Clean your own room and do your own laundry(洗衣物的活). After you have messed up(弄乱)something, you should learn to clean it up yourself. Cleanliness is indeed close to godliness(信奉上帝).
Don’t mistake knowledge for wisdom. No matter how much information or knowledge you have gained, you’ll never make sound(正确的)judgments if you don’t have wisdom. Wisdom comes from imagination and reflection(反省). If you can imagine the possible future outcomes of your present decisions and actions, you can avoid mistakes. And if you can reflect on the mistakes you have made, you can avoid making the same mistakes again and again. Such is wisdom.
Don’t complain. When you take up a job, do your best to carry it out. Don’t waste time complaining about it, no matter how difficult and boring it is.
Finally, be an early bird. If you get up earlier than the sun, you can watch it rising up slowly into the sky. And the sight of the rising sun will warm your heart and give you energy for the day ahead. Besides, being an early bird, you have plenty of time to take exercise or do a lot of work.
60. The father wants to give his son/daughter some advice, because ________.
A. the father is a philosopher(哲学家)

Northern Europeans spend a lot of time in their cold and cloudy winters planning their summer holidays. They are proud of their healthy co1or when they return home after the holiday. But they also know that a certain amount of sunshine is good for their bodies and general health.
In ancient Greece people knew about the healing(治疗的)powers of the sun, but this knowledge was lost. At the end of the nineteenth century a Danish doctor, Niels Finsen, began to study the effect of sunlight on certain diseases, especially diseases of the skin. He was interested not only in natural sunlight but also in artificially(人造地)produced rays. Sunlight began to play a more important part in curing sick people.
A Swiss doctor, Auguste Roller, made full use of the sun in his hospital at Lysine. Lysine is a small village high up in the Alps. The position is important: the rays of the sun with the greatest healing power are the infra-red(红外线的)and ultra-violet(紫外线的)rays; but ultra-violet rays are too easily lost in fog and the polluted air near industrial towns. Dr. Roller found that sunlight, fresh air and good food cure a great many diseases. He was particularly successful in curing certain forms of tuberculosis(肺结核)with his “sun-cure”.
There were a large number of children in Dr. Roller's hospital. He decided to start a school where sick children could be cured and at the same time continue to learn. It was not long before his school was full.
In winter, wearing only shorts, socks and boots, the children put on their skis(滑雪板)after breakfast and left the hospital. They carried small desks and chairs as well as their school books. Their teacher led them over the snow until they reached a slope which faced the sun and was free from cold winds. There they set out their desks and chairs, and school began.
Although they wore hardly any clothes, Roller’s pupils were very seldom cold. That was because their bodies were full of energy which they got from the sun. But the doctor knew that sunshine can also be dangerous. If, for example, tuberculosis is attacking the 1ungs, unwise sunbathing may do great harm.
Today there is not just one school in the sun. There are several in Switzerland, and since Switzerland is not the only country which has the right conditions, there are similar schools in other places.
72. According to the passage, when did sunlight begin to play a more important part in the treatment of disease?
A. From ancient times. B. At the end of the 19th century.
C. Not until this century. D. Only very recently.
73. Why are a Danish doctor and a Swiss doctor mentioned in the second and third paragraphs?
A. Because they both made use of sunlight to treat illness.
B. Because they were the first people who used sunlight for treatment.
C. Because they were both famous European doctors.
D. Because they used sunlight in very different ways.
74. Dr Roller set up a “sun-cure” school probably for the reason that ________.
A. most children could stay in his hospital
B. children could study while being treated
C. the school was expected to be full of pupils
D. the school was high up in the mountains
75. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage?
A. “Sun-cure” schools are becoming popular everywhere.
B. Switzerland is the only country where “sun-cure” schoo1s are popular.
C. Proper conditions are necessary for the running of a “sun-cure” school.
D. “Sun-cure” schools are found in countries where there is a lot of sunshine.

One possible version:
A recent survey shows what the students of our school like to do in their spare time. From the pie chart, we can see 53% of the students like sports, so doing sports is the most popular activity in our school. The second most popular activity for students is surfing the Internet with 36% of the students taking an interest. Only a few students, about 8 percent of them, read as a hobby and even fewer are fond of playing musical instruments.
In my opinion, our school should have more sports facilities built to satisfy the need of the students. Guidance should be given to students on surfing the Internet and ways must be found to arouse students’ interests in reading and music.

W: Alan, I heard that you went to the clinic today. What’s the matter with you?
M: I’ve burnt my arm and hurt my head.
W: What happened?
M: This morning I wanted to have some cup noodles so I boiled some hot water. I was pouring the hot water into the cup when my cat suddenly jumped onto the table and knocked it over. The hot water in the cup burnt my arm. It really hurt so I went to see the doctor.
W: How did you hurt your head then?
M: A can of paint fell down from a ladder. It dropped on the floor in front of me. I knocked my
head against a shop window when I tried to move away.
W: You are so unlucky!
M: Yes, but I finally got to the clinic. The doctor told me to keep my arm clean and dry. He told
me to rest for a day too. I’m feeling better now.

W: Well, it cools pretty well now,but it sure makes an awful lot of noise. It makes it hard to sleep
sometimes.
M: Oh, really? I’11 have someone take a look at it. How about the refrigerator? You said it
wasn’t cooling properly?
W: Oh, it’s working fine now, thanks.
M: Good. And is the washing machine OK?
W: Yes, since you had it fixed last year, I haven’t had any problems with the water leaking. I want
to talk to you about the sofa, though. It’s really uncomfortable. Maybe it’s time to replace
it. How old is it, anyway?
M: Well, I admit it’s pretty old. About 20 years, I guess. Maybe it is time to think about a new one. Is the TV set working on all the stations?
W: Not really. The reception is bad on some of the stations.
M: OK. I’11 have it checked out next week.
