Scientists find that hard, working people live longer than average men and women. Career(职业) women are healthier than housewives.Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than the jobholders. An investigation (调查) shows that whenever the unemployment rate increases by 1%, the death rate increases by 2%. All this comes down to one point, work is helpful to health.
Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy away from loneliness and solitude (孤单).Researches show that people feel unhappy, worried and lonely when they have nothing to do. Instead the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work people come into contact with each other. By collective activity they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work means the loss of everything. It affects man spiritually and makes him ill.
Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment and a sense of achievement.Work makes one feel his value and status in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words.
From the above we can come to the conclusion that the more you work the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study hard and live a happy and healthy life.

Americans have contributed to many art forms, but jazz, a type music, is one of the art form that was started in the United States. Black Americans, who sang and played the music of their homeland, created jazz.?
Jazz is a mixture of the music of Africa, the work songs the slaves sang, and religious(宗教) music. Improvisation is an important part of jazz. In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical(热带的) Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen becomes the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that are called hurricanes, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people.?
The great storms that hit the coast start as soft circling wind hundreds-even thousands-of miles out to sea. As they aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the southeast winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist(潮湿) air flows in at the bottom of such a wind, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process(过程),the moisture in this warm air produces rain, and with it the heat is changed to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases, the young hurricane begins to move in a counter-clockwise motion(逆时针运动).?
The life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released(释放) by a hurricane's rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction (毁灭) in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12 inch downpours, causing sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea-the mountains of water moving toward the hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.
67.When is an ordinary tropical storm called a hurricane ?
A.When it begins in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas.? B.When it hits the coastline.?
C.When it is more than 75 miles wide.? D.When its winds reach 75 miles per hour.

C.That they last about nine days. D.Their strong winds.

  A.heavy rainfall B.dangerous waves?

A.It travels more than 75 miles per hour.? B.It usually stays about 9 days.?

In 1535, Francois I, king of France, ordered a navigator(航海家) named Jacques Cartier to explore the New World and search for a way to India.
Carrier first arrived at the gulf of the St. Lawrence, which he intended (打算) to explore. He did not know what to expect but he hoped that this gulf was just an arm of the ocean between two islands. If it was, he would soon be on his way to the Far East. So he sailed upstream along the St. Lawrence River. However, instead of reaching Asia he arrived at Quebec or Standalone, as the Indians called it. It was at this point that the term "Canada" entered the country’s history. Apparently the word "Canada" came from an India word" kanata", which means community or village. Cartier first used it when he referred to Standalone or Quebec. What a huge "village" Canada is!

It doesn't matter when or how much a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That's what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.
Al Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw Herpin sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. "Equal pay for equal work" is a phrase used by the American women who feel that they arc unfairly treated by society. They say it is not right for women to be paid less than men for the same work.
People who hold the opposite view(观点) (mainly men) have an answer to this. They say that men have more responsibilities than women; a married man is expected to earn money to support his family and to make the important decisions, and therefore it is right for men to be paid more. There are some people who hold even strong views than this and are against married women working at all. When wives go out to work, they say, the home and children are given no attention to. If women are encouraged by equal pay to full-time jobs' they will be unable to do the things they are best at doing: making a comfortable home and bringing up children. They will have to give up their present position in society.
This is exactly what they want to give up, the women who disagree say. They want to escape(逃脱) the limited place which society expects them to fill, and to have freedom to choose between a career(职业) and home life or a mixture of the two. Women have the right not only to equal pay but also to equal opportunities(机会).
These women have expressed their view forcefully by using the famous statement: "All men are created equal." They pointed out that the meaning of this sentence was "all human beings are created equal."

A. Their home life. B. Their present position in society.

B. women want more freedom in deciding the kind of life they live
C. women are no longer interested in taking care of their homes
D. if women are given equal pay, their opportunities will be greater

One summer night, Ludwig von Beethoven was taking a walk when suddenly the night wind brought to his ears the notes form a piano. He stopped to listen carefully and found it was his F Sonata. He followed the music and came to a small house. There through the window he saw a girl playing a very old piano, a young man was making shoes for her. He pushed the door open and went in. The host received him warmly and told him that the girl was his sister, who was blind but very much fond of music. They could not afford to send her to a master. So she was only trying to play some music she heard the neighbour play. She knew it was the work of a great composer. Beethoven was very much moved. Suddenly the candle was blown out, and the moonlight shone on the girl’s slim fingers. Beethoven felt he could no longer control himself and said that he would like to play a little music for them. He played so wonderfully that the brother and sister were surprised. But before they had time to ask him to play another piece, Beethoven was gone. Men are the cleverest and most dangerous animals on earth. Rats come second. Men kill their enemies. They have killed millions of men since ancient times-----but rats have killed hundreds of millions of men. Rats carry diseases. Black rats carry fleas, and these fleas give men bubonic plague. Bubonic plague still kills thousands of Asians and Africans today----as it killed millions of Europeans in the past, until brown rats came to Europe and pushed the black rats out. There is no plague in Europe today, but brown rats carry thirty-five other diseases----typhus for example. Typhus has killed 200 million people in the past 400 years. Rats are dangerous. They not only carry diseases into men’s homes, they also take men’s food. They eat 33 million tons of grain every year. That is enough grain to feed 200 million people—so men die of hunger because rats eat their food. Rats are clever, too. They have good leaders. Men try to poison them, but if their leaders tell them that food is dangerous they do not eat it. So our cities and villages are full of rats. We can go to moon, but we cannot kill this dangerous enemy. Why Is it because we are not clean

Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership which does good to both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites(寄生虫). The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.
Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals(珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as “ dustman”, taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from light so that they cannot live normally, the coral will die.
